A v I E NNNNN NNNXNNN t Debating Teams For the second year Sunbury High School has been represented in the Central Pennsylvania Debating League, sponsored by Bucknell Uni- versity. The League, made up of the following High Schools: Blooms- burg, Lewisburg, Lock Haven, Mitllinburg, Milton, Mount Carmel, Muncy, Northumberland, Shamokin, Sunbury, Wfatsontown and Vilil- liamsport, was divided into four triangles for the first debates which were held March 4. On March ll, the winners of the iirst debates met to decide the contenders for the Iinals which were held March 18. Sha- mokin High School, after winning the debates on this latter date was declared the winner of the League and received the silver loving cup presented by Attorney Lee Francis Lybarger, Sr., of Mittlinburg. Sunbury's two teams worked hard and spent many longhours prac- tisinggunder the capable guidance of Miss Moyer, Senior English Teacher, and Mess! s. Paul Ixeeter and Ralph Vlfoodruft, Coaches of Debating. The question for debate was ttfiesolved: That Pennsylvania should return to the Convention System of Xominationsf' Finally the evening of March the fourth arrived. Sunbury's Atlir- mative team traveled to Mt. Carmel, while the Negative Team enter- tained Shamolzin's Affirmative Team at Sunbury. Sad to say, Sunbury was defeated in both her debates, at Mt. Carmel by a. 3-0 decision of the judgesg at Sunbury by a 2-1 count, Altho, in constructive argument, her debaters were equal ifinot superior to their opponents the delivery was not to the .llldg0S,'llk1llg. While both Mt. Carmel and Shamokm had thoroughly memorized speeches which were delivered with machine-lille accuracy, Sunbury was mole ambitious and employed the method of delivery in which the debaters spoke freelv, that is to say without revious determination of the exact word-order but X5 N with much previous thot and preparation of the material. XVhile the former was perhaps more plcasnig to the ear, albeit somewhat inonoton- ous at times, the latter had the good quality of being spontaneous and convincing, . . ' Not disheartened by their defeats, but having learned many things from them, the members of the teams, with the cooperation of Mr. XVood- ruff, organized The Sunbury Debating Club. Other members were re- ceived, officers elected and a Constitution drawn up. The officers were: John S. Burlew, President, Arthur Hirch, V ice-President, Robert Deit- rich, Secretary, and Pheobe YVithington, Treasurer.
