History of the Latin Class 9 We, a group of about seventy live young people, fresh from the grade schools, entered High School the third day of September 1923. XVhen we entered the Latin class room we were confronted by a jolly, round faced professor, who began innnediately to introduce us to the 'intricacies of the basic foundations and fundamentals of the evolution of modern language-'f . . Frequently thruout the year, our instructor, Mr. T. O. lhlltmall would discuss the lives of those notable Romans who preserved their language so well thru the centuries. These lectures were looked forward to with much pleasure for they added variety to an otherwise dull pro- gram. As a result of our efforts during that year we discovered that those Romans must have been very brilliant people if they ever spoke Latin perfectly. In 1924 we came back a much wiser group, but alas! After the first introduction to Caesar such odd opinions were formed concerning him, that many discontinued their Latin and dropped by the wayside. That year, too, we were favored with tithe spice of life from Rome and a few legendary tales of mythology. lVith this foundation we thought ourselves prepared to enter into a friendship with C1l'0l'0, that famous orator of whom we all know something. However, through the united efforts of instructors and student, we left our Junior Class very light hearted. Early in September, 1926, we again entered the portals of the class- room, a very dignified little group, earnestly awaiting our introduction in Virgil and his age-old story of the Aeneid. XVith all out past exper- ience we found Aeneas, the hero, very fascinating and the reading of his deeds exceedingly interesting. i V Now, as the year draws to a close, having become thoroughly ac- quainted with Aeneas and having traveled with him thru many lands, ' ' -d ,N 'Qi ii tf A hA fh'd'1t' we bid him goo bye. .- o, we s ia no' orget t c. stoiy o 1S a van uies nor the many lessons learned from h11n, but we shall gladly forget the long weary hours spent with some very difficult passages.
