Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1988 volume:

4P VA SPECTRUM 1988 ?ESET S DEDICATION Four years ago, Mr. Beerhalter first dedicated himself to the Class of 1988 when he agreed to become our sponsor. When we arrived at Sun Valley on September 5, 1985, we were “lowly”, insecure freshmen. However, through Mr. Beerhalter’s guidance, we have matured into competent, secure seniors readily able to cope with the future. His support was the motivation we needed to make a name for ourselves as a strong, united class. Those endless nights spent at school preparing for events such as the Halloween dances. Spirit Week, Soph Hop, and Variety Show have not only made these events successful, but have brought us closer together. His time, effort, and boundless energy have en- abled us to become one of the best graduating classes in Sun Valley’s history. Mr. Beerhalter has always been there for us as a teacher, an advisor, and most importantly, as a friend. To show how much we appreciate all you have done, we proudly dedicate the Class of '88 yearbook to you. “Thanks Mr. B., we’ll miss you!” With the construction of Sun Valley High came one of our school’s finest assets, a chemistry teacher named James Elmer. Before dedicating himself to teaching here at the Valley, he held impressive positions such as analytical chemist at Philadelphia Electric Company and consulting nuclear science educator at Sunoco; he also held employ- ment at Limerick nuclear power plant. Deciding to add excitement to his life, he settled down as a chemistry teach- er at Sun Valley. His vast knowledge and twenty- eight years of teaching experience combined with a very dry sense of humor make him one of the most intriguing and exciting teachers at Sun Valley. We’ll never forget those recurrent phrases: “Buffalo bagels!” and “I said to myself, self...” We arc grateful for James Elmer’s commitment to our school and for the words of wisdom which he has imparted to us. The Class of 1988 has been fortunate enough to have Richard Miller as its assistant principal for the past four years. His sincere guidance has been effectively proven through the fine seniors who have emerged from this year’s graduating class. On the outside, his intimidating features give him the semblance of a stern disciplinarian. However, the students, who can see beyond his harsh exterior, know that in reality he has the friendly nature of a stuffed teddy bear. As a man devoted to his work, he has always been there for the students, offering all the support and advice which he can possibly give. We especially appreciate his devotion to our senior class. He has helped us through our last and most precious year at Sun Valley. With great respect for his authority and friendship, we will always remember Richard Miller. If we had included a faculty superlative section in this year’s yearbook, there would be no doubt that Robert Col- lier would be voted as Most Talkative. Being the true “vul- ture for culture that he is, he just can not resist the opportunity to give someone an earful on the American literacy tests, the Renaissance Period, or the study habits of typical Sun Valley history students. Despite his loquacious nature, many of us have learned invaluable lessons from his words of wisdom and find his class both educational and amusing. The amusement is provided by his uncanny ability to make humorous remarks with a straight face. For this reason, he will forever be affectionately known as “Corn on the Bob!” 5 FRESHMEN YEAR REMEMBER September 5, 1984-Sun Valley, here we come! French exchange program. FACES OF ’88 Senior Class Officers Senior Portraits ............. Who’s Who .................... Feature Page ................. Senior Superlatives .......... Costa Ricans Visit Sun Valley ;U Kl E SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Being the first graduating class to endure four years of education, we have conquered many obstacles between our freshmen and senior years. As a result, we of the Class of '88 all share a common bond which enables us to proudly bear the honorable designation as “Sun Valley Graduates. I sincerely hope that good fortune and prosperity fol- low every senior after he shc receives his her diploma in June. As president of our Senior Class I trust that we students of 88 will be able to look back on our experi- ences at Sun Valley High School with refreshing memo- ries for years to come. fallen ft Bill Jeff Denny Stacie Carolyn It’s hard to believe that it's been four years since I’ve become the advisor for the Class of 1988. In those four years, I’ve seen most of you grow from less mature freshmen to responsible seniors. When I think back to all the extra time and effort we put into various activities, I feel none of it was wasted. Working with the Class of 88, though frustrating at times, was always fun, successful, and something I will always remember. After you graduate, don’t forget the friends you made here, both faculty and students. As you take your next step into the future, feel a sense of pride as you look back at Sun Valley and remember all that you accomplished here. US 18 ROBERT ADAMER Schmack. Adasmack. THIS IS THE TIME AND TIME IS GONNA CHANGE, I KNOW WE’VE GOT TO MOVE SOMEHOW, BUT I DON’T WANT TO LOSE YOU NOW ...” BJ WHO’S WHO When it comes to school spir- it, Jeff can not be accused of having a lack of involvement. This friendly, popular class vice-president is very active in basketball. Currently, he is a member of the stage crew and Student Senate. He has also participated in several inner- school and community events such as the Aston Tri-Centenni- al Parade, the Senior Variety Show, and the Science Olympi- ad. Jeff enjoys his spare time by going out with his friends or spending time with family members. Being an intelligent and understanding person, Jeff hopes to enter the exciting, in- teresting profession of medi- cine. There is no doubt that he will be as valuable an asset in the working world as he has been here at Sun Valley. John is one of the few people who have participated in school sports all year round. In the fall, he is out and running cross country track. During the win- ter season, he has the sense to retreat to the warmth of the gym, where he plays on the bas- ketball team. When springtime rolls around, he once again dons the ’ol running shoes and heads for the track. However, sports are not the only thing which keeps John occupied. As a member of the Honor Society and stage crew, he has many responsibilities. Outside of school, he is also involved as vice-president of St. Joseph’s CYO. College plans are in the making for John, who wishes to study mathematics or computer science. 42 l th 0 For the future, Vito envisions himself attending college, en- rolling and graduating from a prestigious medical school, and becoming a successful physi- cian. However, in the mean- time, this outgoing, responsible student has been focusing on the present-his senior year. With participation in football, baseball, Scott’s Hi-Q, Honor Society, SADD, and stage crew, he really keeps himself busy. He also has played ele- mental roles in both the Senior Variety Show and the Science Olympiad. When he is not caught up in school matters, Vito enjoys being with his friends as well as going dancing and playing community sports. Although he admits being proud and moody, Vito has a caring interior which will help him reach goals. Where there is work to be done, Cindy is one of the few individ- uals who will willingly accept the many responsibilities included in performing tasks. She is truly a multi-faceted person, being quite active in the school. Certainly the National Honor Society. Inter- act, the Voice of the Valley, and Scott’s Hi-Q have benefited from the hard work she has put into each organization as a member. As treasurer of the Wrcstlcrcttcs club and photography editor of the Yearbook, she has more than fulfilled her leadership duties. In addition to Cindy’s numerous activities, she also plays varsity field hockey and lacrosse. When she has some time to waste (if that is at all possible), she enjoys watching old movies or reading a good book. Cindy plans to attend college where she will take on a communications program. Although Ginny is a highly regarded athlete, playing both varsity lacrosse and field hockey for three years as well as clinching a spot on the first team All Del-Val for both sports, she has also contribut- ed in many other areas. The Science Olympiad, Interact, National Honor Society, Wrestlerettes, SADD, and the Senior Variety Show arc among her extracurricular activities here at Sun Valley. Earlier this year, one could often catch Ginny on the football field where she served as a manager, or in the training room working as one of the student trainers. Outside of school she is likely to be found reading or visiting friends. For the future, Ginny will attend college to apply her academic abilities to education or nursing. n rmL CL.. C (jjc z Faster than a speeding bullet (well, almost!), Bonnie has the distinction and honor of running a leg on Sun Valley’s 3200 meter relay team which ranked first in the nation in 1987 with the fastest time. It seems she is always on the run; running is an all year activity for her. Aside from cross country and indoor outdoor track. Bonnie hits the malls or just spends some time baking choco- late chip cookies. Her witty yet down-to-earth nature contributes to her friendly character and gives her that special ability to harmoni- ously interact with others. With great determination, Bonnie plans to major in communications at college. hk.a. vjul £. H Q- ruXJbcr Although modest and soft-spoken. Dianne is an important part of the Sun Valley family. She is a member of the National Honor Society, SADD, and the Future Nurses Club. She also plays soft- ball in the spring. Plus. Dianne plays an integral part in community activities outside of school. Her friendliness and dependability have made her quite an asset to the Girl Scouts of America where she goes camping and canoeing. Aside from these activities, she fills her leisure hours babysitting. After graduation. Dianne intends to fur- ther her education in college and pursue a career in the challenging field of electrical engineering. When the word “athletic” is heard, the name that comes to mind is Scott Donald. This name is well known to Sun Val- ley athletics, possibly due to the fact that Scott has achieved several high honors for his per- formance as a football player. In addition to being named to the first team in both the Dcl- Val league and the All-Dclco league, he also received All-Re- gional honorable mention. No doubt that his teammates have noticed Scott’s leadership abili- ty. choosing him as captain of both football and basketball teams. Although seemingly qui- et and low-key, his outgoing character makes him a popular member of the senior class. Scott hopes to attend college on a football scholarship and ma- jor in business. Pom poms and megaphones have been familiar fixtures in Shannon’s life since the first grade. Presently, she is captain of the varsity cheerlcading squad as well as president of the Student Senate. She was active- ly involved in the Senior Vari- ety Show, gaining a role as em- cee. When she is not pursuing these activities she enjoys swim- ming. dancing, and spending time with her family and friends. Her outgoing, under- standing character will enable her to further her interests in college where she plans to ma- jor in special education in hopes to help children. Yet will she try to continue cheering after high school? The answer—you bet! Bill is that friendly, consider- ate co-captain of the basketball team who can be found ninety- nine percent of the time shoot- ing hoops in the gym. Although he may seem to talk, dream, and play basketball, this com- petitive athlete also happens to be a studious and intelligent student. Currently ranked elev- enth in the class, he is a member of the National Honor Society. His outside interests (outside of basketball, that is) include ten- nis, soccer, music and comput- ers. He plans to fortify these interests in college while major- ing in computer science. And we can almost count on him dribbling a basketball between his study hours and possibly playing on a college team. 43 WHO’S WHO U JbhJia (ay ulu Unknown to many, Denny seemingly possesses schizo- phrenic characteristics, living multiple lives. During the day, he is Denny Jones-thc smart and friendly class treasurer who has made significant contribu- tions to the Science Olympiad. National Honor Society, Scott’s Hi-Q, Voice of the Val- ley, and the varsity soccer team. However, many arc not aware of his deranged sense of humor or of his nocturnal role as “Clock One” at KMart where he works part time. In addition, anonymous sources reveal that on the weekends he is known as...the provocative Def Jam? One thing is certain, and that is Denny (if that IS his real name) will continue his education in college with possible graduate work. He stands alone, misunder- stood by some yet magnani- mous, honorable, and agreeable to all (or at least that is how Dave would describe himself). A high class rank is counter bal- anced by a surfeit of extracur- ricular activites at school and interests at home. At SV, he plays both soccer and tennis, as well as being in every possible band in school: marching, con- cert, stage, and Variety Show. He also participates in Scott’s Hi Q. Science Olympiad, and Musicale. Unbeknownst to some, he is an avid computer and rap music fan. Lofty goals are set for Dave who is going to MIT to major in engineering on a ROTC scholarship. Throughout her high school career, Cyndy has been a prom- inent member of her class. In her sophomore and junior year, she took upon herself the duties as class treasurer which includ- ed keeping a record of all the money transactions during the numerous fund raising projects. For the past three years, this congenial student has enjoyed serving on the Student Senate where she presently holds the position of Secretary. Her most recent challenge has been the 1988 Spectrum yearbook pro- duction of which she is the fi- nance editor, although she has done much more than handling the books. After graduation. Cyndy plans to attend Penn State University and hopefully become a kindergarten teacher. With distinguished membership in band, chorus, drama, and Select Ensemble for chorus. Sue has more than proven her musical talents. However, her activities are not limited to the arts for she is also a member of the National Honor Society, Scott’s Hi Q, of which she is co-captain. Teammates, and the tennis team. Somehow she has found the time to get involved in the Senior Variety Show as well. Having an understanding and kind nature. Sue hopes to use these characteristics in the future as a high school math teacher. Ranking 13th in the class. Sue plans to attend West Chester Uni- versity or Shippensburg. Although she focuses on one sport, which is running. Jackie has proven herself to be one of the most prominent athletes in Sun Valley. Dedicating much of her time to cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and outdoor track in the spring, her devotion and determination have won her such honors as being named to the All-State track team and contributing to a 1987 State Championship in the 2-mile relay and number one national ranking of Sun Valley’s relay team. On top of her athletic talent, she is also a fine student and member of the National Honor Society. When she is not running around the track, she can be found running around the mall. Jackie plans to attend college for Sports Medicine. iDpeetr of fu OfauMVUMLJ One of our class' most well-rounded students has to be Amy. Her good-nature and friendly, cheerful attitude has made her President of the National Honor Society and Wrestlerettes. This active stu- dent's other various school activities include Student Senate. Scott Hi-Q. Interact. SADD, Voice of the Valley, and copy editor of the Yearbook. Her other accomplishments include tri-captain of field hockey and a member of the lacrosse team. Outside of school, she is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a candy- striper at Riddle. Her spare time is filled with running, shopping, and eating. High ambitions arc leading her to college where Amy hopes to major in accounting and or mathematics. Although she loves all sports. Dana has focused on playing field hockey and lacrosse in which her aggressive, energetic traits really shine. This outgoing athlete does not limit herself to sports alone: she is also a member of the Student Senate and National Honor Society and a cast member of the Senior Variety Show Yet. Dana also has a quiet side; she enjoys playing all kinds of music on the piano. When she is not involved in school activities or sports. Dana spends her spare time with her friends. With her activeness and multi-talents, Dana’s presence will more than likely be welcomed at the college of her choice where she plans to study business manage- ment. Friendly and outgoing. Judy has held such honorable posi- tions as captain of the Varsity cheerleading squad and class secretary in her freshmen year. She is often lending a helping hand, working as an office and student assistant as well as de- voting a lot of time on dance committees. Outside of Sun Valley, playing for Brookhavcn softball team, going out with friends, and listening to music arc the activities which keep her occupied Judy plans to attend West Chester University and major in cither accounting or business management. Carolyn is one of our class’ most artistically inclined stu- dents. Her creativity has been portrayed in such projects as the Senior Variety Show, in which she was the designer of the t-shirts, stage backdrops, and program covers. Much of her time is devoted to her artwork as she does a lot of painting and drawing and has attended various art programs outside of school. In addition to art, this friendly, outgoing, class historian enjoys being with her friends, going to the beach, or watching ice hockey (being that she is an avid fan of the Flyers). Carolyn paints a vivid picture of the future for herself: she plans to attend Kutztown. after which she will be drawn into the colorful work as a commercial artist. One of the more athletically- oriented members of the senior class. Stacy is a member of the field hockey , basketball, and la- crosse varsity teams. In her spare time, she enjoys playing soccer, lifeguarding. and teach- ing swimming lessons. Her ef- forts have not gone without rec- ognition as she has been a recipient of the Coaches Award for lacrosse and designated by the Inquirer as Athlete of the W eek. This active athlete is also a student assistant, football manager, and Senior Variety Show cast member. Stacy's am- bitions include attending Penn State University Park to play lacrosse and major in hotel and restaurant management. WHO’S WHO Stacie is a very outgoing, friendly person who is undoub- tably a noteworthy asset to the senior class. She has also prov- en her leadership capabilities in her roles as tri-captain of the field hockey team and secretary of the senior class. In addition, she plays lacrosse and has con- tributed much time to the Se- nior Variety Show and dance committees. Her passion for art has led her to help the yearbook and Motif with various drawing tasks as well as to set her future plans. In college, Stacie will combine her talent and caring attitude in hopes of becoming an art therapist and helping young and old with emotional and learning problems through her many artistic abilities. While claiming to be a stand- by cheerleader, Dave is in reali- ty a fine athlete and student. As tri-captain of the varsity soccer team, he has fulfilled his leader- ship duties, being named to the first team in the Dcl-Val League. As a student, he has achieved high grades which help rank him in the top ten percent of the class. In school, he has participated in FAD. SADD, and the Senior Variety Show. With creative, eccentric tastes, Dave loves bicycling, fishing, waterskiing, boating, and extracurricular studying in his spare time. Dave plans to attend college, majoring in en- gineering. out of which he seeks to make a career. If all else fails, Dave says he will turn to painting, his back-up profes- sion. Jeff Weaver is his name and football is his game. This year alone Jeff proved his athletic abilities out on the football field and became a force to be reck- oned with by other teams. Sus- taining injuries throughout the season did not prevent him from high achievements. Jeff was named to the first team in the Del Val League and received All-Deleo Honorable Mention. In addition, he was selected as Sun Valley Football’s Most Valuable Player and led his team as well as the county in receiving yardage. He is also an outdoor track hurdler in the spring. Friends would describe him as friendly and dedicated. This dedication will be carried into college with Jeff who hopes to continue playing football. With the numerous duties as the senior class president. Bill is mainly kept occupied by the many senior class activities. Yet, an outgoing characteristic within him has gotten him involved in foot- ball. the Senior Variety Show, and the Aston-Tri-Centcnnial Pa- rade, and the light crew. In addition to participating in school and community events and organizations. Bill enjoys baseball, golf, pool, cards, and music. Friendly and sociable. Bill will not experi- ence very much difficulty in adjusting to the college atmosphere. For the future, he hopes to become a self-employed (and successful) businessman and coach young athletes. Although Joann would love to be able to sleep more and watch TV, this diligent and loyal student is often busy at school. Here she is involved in numerous activities of which she is an integral part. For instance, she is layout editor of the yearbook, vice-president of Wrestlerettes, and secretary of the Honor Society. In addition, she is an active member of Interact and Scott Hi-Q as well as a participant in the Student Youth Forum. Ranking among the top ten of the class, Joann will have no problem in carrying out her future plans which are to attend college and major in molecular biology. 46 NO SWEAT! OOH! MISS CHI Dan Shanko and Keith Morey Jeff Smith and Len Ciesielski The beauty contest second only to Homecoming Queen is the annual Miss Chi contest. This year's contest featured the all-American, apple-pie looks of McClain and Ciesielski, the exotic looks of Suda and DiCamillo, the blond, bombshell look of Shanko. and the liberated, natural look of Sccfcldt. Among the hobbies of these gorgeous women arc night work at certain prestigious motels, spending time with their adoring lovers, and doing household chores at home. On the weekends, these women also like to get together to play some friendly tackle football. The contest was very competitive and featured a personal contest between Suda and DiCa- millo. Suda was competing to sec how much of her leg she could expose while DiCamillo bared her belly in challenge. Overall, the women say they are not much different than other women. All funds raised from the exhibition went to charity. This year’s Christmas Ball will be a joyful memory in the minds of those who attended this successful dance. BAND Drum Major: Dawn Mercadante This 1987-88 band season started off slow with the hiring of a new band director, Mr. David Carroll. However, once practices began there was no turning back. Many hours of practice, long Saturdays, and total dedication contributed to the Sun Valley Band’s impressive finish in the top ten at the Atlantic Coast Championships. The band also achieved other awards dur- ing its season, including Best Band Front, Best Marching and Manuever- ing, and High Visual. Without the help of many dedicated band parents this rewarding season could not have taken place. COMPETITION SCORES SITE S.V. Mrs. Brown, they involve themselves in other activities. They are participants in the Talent Expo in which they take blood pressure, height and weight, and test eyes and hearing. This year they also began to sell various but- tons to develop a future scholorship award. Although they arc few in number, the hard work they have done is well appreciated by both the school and the community. FBLA (L to R). Chrissy Evans. Marc Bendo. Denise Bell. Mary Kate Doyle. Mr. Romano, helps the students to learn skills which are then practiced in the Book Store. Other than handling the Book Store, they take field trips to various places such as the Federal Reserve Building. Also, to be further introduced into the business world, speakers sometimes come to discuss different aspects of the business field. GUIDANCE AIDES As most students know, the Guidance De- partment becomes very busy during the school year. To help lessen the burden of the secre- tary, Mrs. Cirgliano and the counselors, stu- dent aides take it upon themselves to do vari- ous jobs. Such tasks include alphabetizing and filing, handling mail and announcements, and being a messenger. The many students, who donate their free time, arc an important asset to the hectic Guidance Department. Sue Kester (Not Pictured: Dora Paolucci, Mary Kate Doyle, Nadine Gualticri) LIBRARY AIDES Mr. Cummiskey surrounds himself with a staff of dedicated assistants in order to main- tain the condition of Sun Valley’s library. His library aides usually get the ‘‘dirty work” like straightening shelves, checking out books, or finding out whose books arc overdue. There is always plenty of work to be done after a day’s worth of students have visited the library to exhaust its materials. Fortunately for Mr. C., his aides arc there to lend a hand. With a job as monstrous as this, it has become necessary for her to enlist a group of students to aid her in her task. These volun- teer students arc the attendance aides who spend their study halls with Mrs. Selcyo, call- ing homes to verify a students absence, mak- ing sure teachers get their attendance sheets, or keeping the records up to date. The atten- dance aides make Mrs. Seleyo’s job a little easier because without them she'd never ac- complish her job. (Especially when it comes down to tracking down eight parents at their jobs because their sons went out to breakfast!) Attcndcncc Aides include: Heather Rosborough. Janette Vickers. Sharon Larsen, Dawn Michalkiewicz, Jeff Stein. Vicki Quinn, Kerri Burrell. Allison Murray, Chrissy Ficoturo, Aimcc Shive OFFICE AIDES (L to R): Sandy Hibbcrd. Judy Robertson, Ginny Carroll, Cindy Brown There is always something to be done in Sun Valley’s office and without a little help, Mrs. Florio, Mrs. Winbourn, and Mrs. Rhoads would forever be fighting an uphill battle. Fortunately, there arc students who are willing to spend their study halls in the office performing the more mundane duties which must be done daily. These tasks include the reading of the morning announcements, an- swering the telephone, calling students to the office for various reasons and other odd jobs. Thanks to the office aides, the secretaries' day has become much easier and a lot more bear- able. 75 LEO CLUB The Leo (Leadership. Experience, and Op- portunity) Club is brand new this year at Sun Valley, although the club has been active in Aston for 8 years. There are 4.294 Leo Clubs with approximately 107.350 members serving in 103 countries. The purpose of the Leo Club is to promote service activities among the youth of a community in order to develop LEO characteristics. The S.V. YEARBOOK Yearbook Editors: (Front): Cyndy Mansi (Back from L to R): Joann Ullman, Amy Okumura, Cindy Brown Another Editor: (action photo) Dave Young Advisor: George Bcerhalter Despite the many delays and hassles, we of the 1988 Spectrum Yearbook Staff have successfully accomplished the tremendous task for which we first assumed responsibility (under duress) at the end of the 1986-87 school year. Throughout the past year, we trudged into the dark confines of the cafeteria after school with one goal fixed in our minds: to work on the yearbook. For hours at a time and often into the late night we forged our way to that ominous final deadline. We real- ized what a “deadline really was—it was an unattainable goal for which we would have to work ourselves to death in order to achcivc. These deadlines were not the only deterrents to our progress. At times our brains failed to function properly in the subdcgrcc atmosphere of the office (perhaps due to the fact that the heater was broken). In addition, constant interaction with one another produced some downright ugly moments of complete exasperation, desperation, and execration. There were the times when we resorted to throwing sharply pointed objects in the ceiling as a way to release our aggressions and frustrations. Yet. we learned to cope with each other's shortcomings and to enjoy each other's company. There was always something to laugh at-oursclves, Mr. Bccrhaltcr's diet, someone’s dorky picture (maybe it was your’s!). We fueled our crazed imaginations on concentrated Country Time Lemonade. Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, and Groffs Potato Chips. Together we formed an invincible team. WE DID IT! Twenty-one wins was a school record, and it was the first time in the school’s history that the girls had won twenty games in a season. I answered with confidence that we would be very competitive in our league and felt we could play with most teams. How- ever, to improve upon 21-3 would be a lot to expect. But YOU DID! The 1987-88 girls basketball team successfully defended their Christmas tournament and Del Val league championship winning both for the third consecutive year. You went undefeated in league games (12-0) and set a new school record for wins in a season with a final record of 22-3. Coach Owsley and I are very proud to have had the opportunity to work with such a great group of young ladies. My Best Wishes to You All! Coach Mcssick 109 Congratulations to Kristy Sipple who scored her 1000th point on February 2, 1988 against the Interboro Bucs! J. VARSITY S.V. (L to R) Captain Bonnie DiCicco, Coach Bill Stull, Captain Jackie Lynch THAT WAS THEN ADMINISTRATION Graduation from Sun Valley High School is, indeed, a significant achievement. The curriculum is diversified and standards of achievement are high. Students may elect a very rigorous academic program or a standard course of study. Regardless of the track elected, even if the minimum requirements for a diploma have been satisified, a significant accomplishment has been at- tained. Therefore, I congratulate you, the Sun Valley Class of 1988. I sincerely hope that the education you have obtained in your academic and extra-curricular program in the Penn-Dclco School District will serve you well as you move into this next stage of your life. I wish you good health and success in your future! Administrators (L to R): Theodore Cramer Dr. John Cipollini Dr. A. Robert Ccnnamc Roberta Hartzcll School Board (Standing): Robert McElwee Margaret Hurlburt Nancy Bowden Michael Kane Daniel Paskill (Sitting): Dorsey Fooks Jack Holefelder Harold Baker (Not Pictured): Janet Loftus 120 PRINCIPALS Four years ago students entered Sun Valley as the first freshman class to attend the high school in grades 9-12. Given the greater academic, athletic and extracurricular opportunities, the Class of 1988 has flourished. At no time in Sun Valley’s history have the students performed as well academically and set their sights with as great a vision. You can look back on your high school years with pride. Individual and group accomplishments have been marked down in the pages of Sun Valley’s history. As each of you reflects on your high school days, those memories will be brought back into focus as you pull this yearbook from its storage place in your home. Congratulations to each of you and best wishes for a successful and healthy life. 3.jb Graduation day is always a day of mixed emotion for the staff members who have helped to guide you through the four years of your secondary education. We look with pride as the graduating members of the Class of 1988 take their first tentative step into adulthood and hope you are as prepared as possible—it is a big step. We feel a sense of loss in that we won’t see you in the hallways and classrooms next year. This loss is somewhat muted as we welcome your brothers and sisters in the Class of 1992 and begin our guidance all over again. Good luck to all of you in your adult pursuits and remember with fondness those who helped you make this next life passage. Your class is the first to spend four years at Sun Valley. When you entered as freshmen in 1984, you were part of a new alignment in the Penn-Dclco School District. Many new courses and concepts were introduced to you at that time. You were forced to adapt to these changes in addition to changing schools and you responded admirably to the challenge. During your four years at Sun Valley High School you have succeeded in both academic pursuits and extracurricu- lar activities. My congratulations to you on your attain- ments and my good wishes go with you as you endeavor to succeed in the future. fdoLJ P. i Mu. This prestigious annual award is de- servedly bestowed upon this dedicated worker for his generous and unfailingly cheerful service to us in the following ways: I. The countless times wc were locked out of the office and Frank in- terrupted his work to open the door 2. The equally countless times wc asked him to open the soda room which he graciously did 3. The restraint he showed in never committing acts of vi- olence when wc walked or slipped on his freshly mopped floor 4. And most importantly, the warm smile he readily gave us when we finally dragged our weary bodies out of school. SECRETARIAL STAFF EDITOR'S NOTE: WHO DOES NOT BELONG ON THIS PAGE?
