One Step Closer Finding ourselves at the crux of our high school days, we felt part of the action. Si- multaneously. we were constantly remind- ed that we must plan for the future, al- though it seemed so far away. This re- quired visiting college representatives in the career center, choosing an occupation, and taking the SAT’s. Yet another obstacle to happiness remained—driver’s ed. How- ever tedious were those forty-five minute sessions, they supported us as we bid for a license. The success of our prom resulted from hours of rigorous, yet enjoyable, work. The days early hours found the com- mittee still decorating diligently. The foot- ball team discovered success as well by capturing the Del Val AAA Champ- ionship. The band enjoyed an At- lantic Coast Championship in Group III, continuing their trail of triumph. Philadel- phia became the “City of Champions” as the Phillies threw the city into baseball hysteria with their World Series Victory. The Eagles soared high in 1980, rewarding their loyal fans with a trip to New Orleans and Super Bowl XV. During Mr. Reagan’s inaugural festivities, President Carter suc- ceeded in compromising with the Iranian captors. This affected most American citi- zens. accounting for a unity foreign to America since the pre-Vietnam era. Wak- ing from dormancy Mt. St. Helens erupted, drawing geologists from across the country to the foot of this natural wonder. Howev- er, weighting America’s excitement, the tragedy of a New York City murder over- came the world’s emotions. Former Beatle and peace activist John Lennon suffered fatal gunshot wounds, resulting in univer- sal grief and turmoil. Obsessions, such as horror films, the Rubik’s Cube, General Hospital, soccer, and Cable TV entertained us throughout the school year. But none was so great as to overshadow Dallas. “Who shot J. R.?”, entangled the thoughts of over ten million Americans, shattering all previous television rating records. Stu- dents sought consolation following the dis- bandment of Led Zeppelin; plus the real- ization that they were overwrought with senioritis, and not yet seniors! Our junior year fulfilled and prepared us in a manner deserving commendation. We gained ex- perience and grew, bringing us one step closer. 10
