SOPHOMORE YEAR A New Beginning Thinking back on our sophomore year, we should smile and giggle; for there are several engravings on our minds and souls. Our first day at Sun Valley was filled with nerves and instabilities; nevertheless, the excitement shone through. A new place, new friends to make, and new activities to involve ourselves in. all created an irresis- table pride of actually attending high school! This year left not only our child- hood years behind, but simultaneously started a new decade, a new' start, and a new life-style. Karly in the year, most set goals, whether they be for exceptional grades or outstanding athletic perfor- mances. This year was unique as our prin- cipal, Mr. Charles Fitzgerald left, and Dr. A. Robert Cenname assumed his position. This transition promoted and shaped the year, from the bonfire warming our hearts the night proceeding the Thanksgiving Day football game, through our Soph Hop. The band captured the Atlantic Coast Championship in Group II. starting their wave of future success. The wrestling team also earned a championship as the Del Val Champions in 1980. Conforming to the Sun Valley example, the IS A Hockey Team threw the nation into a frenzy, stealing the gold from a stunned USSR team. Economi- cally. the price of gold started its journey toward exorbitancy. Statewide, gas became scarce, resulting in rationing and lines ex- ceeding credibility. In all his splendor. Pope John Paul II visited the “City of Brotherly Love.” But this joy faded as the l .S. Embassy fell to fanatical Iranian stu- dents who terrorized the nation exceeding a year. In Hollywood, there were raised eyebrows as the production of highly charged films such as The Deer Hunter stunned many organizations. Sci-Fi swept the moviegoers of the country with the continued success of Star liars. These highlights of our sophomore year supplied the stimulus to improve with each semes- ter and relish every moment. It truly was a new beginning!
