g CTRUAf, VOLUME is valle y high ,cc V -i DEDICA TION Since 1977, our class advisor, Mr. Howard Ruoff, has made our class an important part of his life. With his goal of making the Class of 1980 the most active ever at Sun Valley, he spent hours on proms, the variety show, and many other endeavors. In appreciation of his nonstop enthusiasm and encouragement, we dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Ruoff. 2 APPRECIATION Our final year at Sun Valley has been en- hanced by our year- book advisor, Mrs. Evelyn Speer. With- out her help, there would be no yearbook. She battled for a new photographer and spent hours on fund- raisers along with the enormous amount of time required for actu- al production of the book. With sincere ap- preciation, we honor your dedication, Mrs. Speer. 3 SUN VALLEY: 7:55 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., buses, homeroom, 4 classes, late bells, lunch, crowded hallways, activities 5 champs, Atlantic Coast band champs, soph hop- Dreams, class rings REFLECTIONS OF THE 70S: jeans, skirts, perms, music, concert shirts, gas shortage. After walking down the entrance hall surrounded by clouds, couples handed in their “Two Tickets to Paradise and entered just that - an island paradise. Couples spent the evening dancing near a waterfall, fountain, and island scenes to the music of Marlowe. At midnight, we returned only to sail away again on the “Love Boat ' our parent's surprise theme. After stepping aboard and being greeted by our Captain (Mr. Frame), we view ed darkened city scenes through the portholes. Dinner and dance music was provided by Townsedge, who learned the “Love Boat theme just for us. Overall, the prom committee and the parents made our Junior Prom one of the best to be held at Sun Valley. 41 GODSPELL The St. Francis De Sales Youth Group, in cooperation with the Senior Class, presented the inspirational musical Godspell on October 24, 25, and November 2, 1979. Audiences were amazed at the talent shown in some of our own Sun Valley students as they performed for their families and friends. Roses, tutus, striped socks and the Incredible Hulk brought out a message never before dealt with in such a modern version of the first disciples' conversion. HOMECOMING The election of a new Homecoming Queen this year included the selection ol' the first Homecoming King, Dennis Waldron. The spirit of Sun Valley rang our during the Pep Rail} and carried the team to victory. Faces of the past returned to cheer on the Vanguards and watch the crowning of our Homecoming Queen. Karen Forte. Old friends ', a new Queen, and a Vanguard victory became a great night in Sun Valley's history. 4 j Just before the Thanksgiving holiday one of Sun Valley's most beautiful males won the coveted title of Miss Chichester 1979- 1980. The tension mounted as each of the beauties strutted their stuff before the students and faculty. Finally, at the climax of the Pep Rally, the winner of the Miss Chi contest was announced. Miss Bowl was on hand to retire the crown to our new Miss Chi, Miss St. Clair. 4 VARIETY SHOW One of the highlights of our Senior year was the Senior Variety ShowJrW carried a wide range of skits from vocalists ter dance groups and just plain comedy. It was put together by Mr. Ruoff and Miss Cook. How many of us will remember: the chorus line, nuke Iran, hairy legs, Johnny Carson, the pit skit, and who remembers who asked that all impor- tant question, 'Still no sign of land? 46 CHRISTMAS BALL The elves were hard at work last Christmas transforming the cafeteria for the 1979 Christmas Ball. Candycancs. snowflakes. and gingerbread men created a Yuletidc atmosphere and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause were on hand to take Christmas wishes. The height of the evening was the crowning of the new Christmas Ball queen, Lisa San tore. Hard work at summer camp brought the girls back to The Valley with renewed spirit, lots of new cheers, and several impressive awards. The Pep-Rallies were great! There were many cute skits and con- tests that added to the enthusiasm. The girls lead the cheers at all sport events which helped to brighten ev- ery defeat and glorify every victory. Sun Valley has been our testing ground, the foundation for our jump into society. Graduation is not the end to our growth, however. It marks the starting point in a new phase of our lives; from now on, we are on our own. We are individuals, the thinkers, dreamers, builders and doers of the future. Nothing that we set out to do is impossible, if we have the desire to succeed and the will to strive. All it takes is belief in your capabilities. The future is ours to shape. Beginning our life in high school was a major change from Junior High, but we soon adjusted. Our Junior year began badly, yet we managed to make it a fulfilling one. Finally, we have reached the last leg of our journey. We must now venture into the world outside of Sun Valley High School. BA We the Spectrum Stuff of I9X0. ha ve tried to depict in this yearbook the memories of our years spent here at Sun Valley High School. Without the help of many individuals, however, we would have been unable to create this yearbook. To Ms. l.inda Greth, who started us on our way last year; to Mr. Charles Fitzgerald, who helped immensely with our photography problems: to Mr. Harry Hill. Mr. Kenneth Bolyard, and Mr. Richard Miller who were there when we needed them: to the secretaries, Mrs. Ruth W inborn, Mrs. Jean McBain. and Mrs. Ruth Rhoades who were always willing to help us in any way they could. To Zamsky Studios who were always so cooperative in every way possible: and finally, to Mr. William O'Brien of Josten’s American Yearbook Company who gave his time, guidance, and encouragement — enabling us to produce this yearbook. As the names lying between these pages begin anew, making their ways, they will carry with them their high school memories. We, the Class of 19X0, thus, start the new decade. 188
