Mrs. Mac- Donald has given much of her time to advise the Spectrum staff: helping to make our yearbook something special. She has shown the stag' how to work together, directing them in the dwerent skills needed to accomplish the job. What does a yearbook staff get with Mrs. MacDonald? SUCCESS! Casting, Costumes, Acts . . . Mr. Hamlin. All these factors played an important part in the Senior Variety Show, making 'Saturday Night Jive a hit. Mr. Hamlin helped our senior class form this show into something special with our own ideas and skits. Directing is a major role needed in each production and Mr. Hamlin filled this position successfully. The Seniors of S.V thank Mr. Hamlin for all his help. 2 Although he is gone, Dr. Zechman will be remembered by all as the man who helped us toward our frst steps of maturity in our early years at Sun Valley. I 92 Mr. Bolyard, assistant principal, guided the students of Sun Valley in many situations. He shows the students he cares with his help in keeping the school always at its best. Being assistant principal holds many responsibilities, for Mr. Miller must retain an authoritative stance while still acting as a friend toward the students. Within the short time Mr. Michael main- l tained the role of acting principal, he tried to organize the frst few confusing weeks of our senior year while giving his help and guidance whenever it was requested. . Decision-making played a major part in our senior elte r year. To help lighten the load, Mrs. Fedena was always there to give her guidance and advice. She gave us direction to our paths in the future. DEDICAZ ION+e h . . 'V . ,gs 'V , 1, ' As class advisor, history teacher and track coach, Mr. Lefever could always be seen helping the senior class. His versatility and spirit have kept our senior class organized, allowing us to enjoy our senior year without worry. He has handled our many problems, organized activities, and ar- ranged the confusion of graduation with trememdous success. He will be remembered by all, with or without mustache, as the man who made our senior year the best. , 4 4 - 1.-f 1 I o . The first big event was the Sports Jamboree in which we placed second. Who can forget our famous buttons . . . the big ball football game that went pop . . . beating the seniors in tug-o-war . . . Danny Burbage devouring a pickle . . . and the famous chariot race featuring the class advisors? The class then sponsored a hayride, followed by a bonfire. At the conclusion of our sophomore year we held our most memorable event-the Soph Hop. The theme was appropriate because it was truly '24 Time For Us. --- ' 'V tl class with class, chariot races, tartuffe, soph hop 1 4 1 W A timefor us . . . JUNIOR YEAR: welcoming back picnic, PSAT's, . . . W9 What's with you? Haven't you ever seen a guy type before? BMW E No longer were we the scorned sophs-we were juniors now, and we started that year with a whirlwind of activities. No sooner had each junior gotten his new class ring turned a seventy-seventh time by that special someone, when we undertook a maga- zine drive that netted 81500! Other events included the Bicentennial Sports Jamboree, and a very successful rock concert by Ezra White. In the mean- time, members of our class were con- tributing to the entire school in a multitude of ways. Several juniors showed a flair for drama in the Drama Club's acclaimed 1976 production, Up the Down Staircase. Other class- mates played an important role in the second place finish by the varsity basketball team. Nonetheless, the un- deniable highlight of our junior year was Hawaiian Paradise , the long awaited Junior Prom. What are you staring at? magazine sales, rock concert, class rings, the prom JUNIOR PROM: hula girls, pineapples, bamboo, 9 .J Take that!!! 5 palm trees, leis, the island, flowers, volcano, aloha Hours of dyeing sheets, painting murals, cutting palm leaves land palm leaves and palm leaves and MORE palm Ieavesj, and stringing Japanese lanterns had transformed the gym into a true Hawaiian Paradise. Couples chattered and laughed at the tables while others bumped and hustled on the dance floor to the sounds of Ezra White. Aher midnight the promgoers retired to the afterprom, which was furtively planned by our parents. As five o'clock approached, many happy couples left the tropical atmosphere filled with memories. He's all mine, girls! 11 SENIOR YEAR: bonfres, pep rallies, yearbooks, ,,,, MP. Cut that out. 1 e A 2 L + W Can you keep a secret? Bob Fithian the second. Y0u're kidding! Some you clung to for security in your sopho- more year. Others you developed long lasting relationships with in your , later years. Some you knew only from homeroom or lunch. Others were in your classes. With some of these people you spent time at club - meetings and Friday night football games. We entered as unaware sophomores, ready to learn what the Valley had to offer. We are now leaving as knowing seniors, ready to learn what the world has to offer. As we venture out into this new environment, we will begin to encounter many challenges. LUe is full of many dUferent situations, some will prove harder than others. Yet, if we face each with the perseverance that helped us overcome the obstacles we faced in high school, the results will always be the same-as successful as we made our stay here at Sun Valley. I wish you a lU'etime of Happy Tomorrows beginning Today. Take care and God bless. Sincerely yours, Deborah L. Bailey Mr. Paul Lefever-Advisor Michelle Brooks-Secretary Many hours of planning and decision-making were a part of the senior ojficers duties in order to make our senior year-and all of our stay here at Sun Valley- enjoyable and memorable. Senior mugs, dues, an- Bart Hickman-Treasurer 70 nouncement orders, class meetings, and the prom were only a few of the ways they devotedly contributed to the weUare of the class 0f1977. Evie Zdun-Historian WH O'S WHO: talen Heading such an intricate production as SPECTRUM entails much responsibility, but DEBBIE BAILEY made The Times of Your Life a huge success while at the same time serving as class president and participating in numerous school activities. It's no surprise that the Drama CIub's productions were so successfulg DIANE DEORIO, a very talented individual, was a part of the cast. Demonstrating her ability was the fact that she played a wide range of characters with equal proficiency. Her future plans? An acting career, of course! t, leadership, pride, achievement Past yearbooks have shown the students elected to Who's Who posed as though for a portrait. However, this year's staff decided that our pictures would portray each person depicted in some aspect that won him that distinction, exhibiting the qualities that make him an excellent representative of our class. Exhibiting much talent in various musical areas was HEATHER MATTES. Heather was an avid flutist, perform- ing in the playing band and orchestra. However, herforte lay in the vocal field, for she earned the distinction of being selected to Pennsyl- vania's district chorus this past year. Class historian EVIE ZDUN was always one of the more active participants in the many activities our class sponsored. E vie's involvement in the prorns, picnics, fund-raising events, and other undertakings helped to create much of the fond remembrances that she collected and saved in our class scrapbook-one of her responsibilities as historian. JAY DOUGHERTY's participation in our two football championships and the boys' basketball and track teams won him the honor of being named Sun Valley's Evening Bulletin Scholar-Athlete. Jay's excellent grades were also responsible for his attaining this merit. An avid dancer, MICHELLE BROOKS helped make the Psychedelic Shack Dance one of the more popular acts of Saturday Nite Jive. But Michelle's creativity was not limited to the stage: she contributed many ideas as class secretary, with positive results. DEBBIE FEASTER displayed an interest in the creative arts. She was a talented saxophonist with the stage band, but she also played a critical but unrecognized part at dramatic productions, working backstage with the Stage Crew. Aiding the unsure to plan their future was JANE MIDDLETON, one of the helpful student volunteers who ran the new Career Resource Center. Jane's own post-graduation plans include majoring in education of the deaf at Penn State. BART HICKMAN was constantly busy due to his hectic schedule. Besides holding such responsible and demanding positions as class treasurer, Student Senate president, and Interact vice-president, he managed to squeeze in time for football practice while maintaining high grades in djficult courses. Our marching band experienced its best competing season ever, due to the leadership and experience of seniors like flag girl KATHY GLYSHAW. Kathy always gave a total effort despite her dyfcult schedule and her involvement in many, many activities. Sun Valley girls' track history spans only three years, but LISA KRETZ helped create some of it as an outstanding sprinter and jumper. Other sports in- terested Lisa as well,' as a wrestlerette she ardently supported our matmen. To best be able to represent the opinions of one's fellow students, a Student Senate member must show a true New Q ij Ecology Club. concern for their needs. This was one reason CHRIS SANTORE was so well liked by her classmates. This quality should also insure Chris much future success as a psychologist. An exceptional student, BUDD KANIEFSKI brought a great deal ofprestige to himseU' and to Sun Valley by winning a National Merit Scholarship. However, pursuing his studies did not occupy all of Budd's time, he was also a member of the football team and Keeping students posted on the latest news-making events was one of many responsibilities MARY BETH EBNER handled as our representative to A Younger Voice. Mary Beth also served the student body as a member of Student Senate and numerous other clubs. Despite many setbacks and the initial absence of an advisor, editor JEAN KRAUS kept the presses rolling with copies of our student newspaper, The Voice of The Valley. She also devised several innovations of interest outside of school that boosted readership. One ofour more versatile students was TERRI ELMER. Among her many roles were that ofstu- dent, ranking first in our class,' athlete, as one of the pioneers of girls' track: and musician, taking part in the band's outstanding competitive season of I976. Terri was interested in theatrics as wel1,' she was a member ofthe cast of 'Saturday Nite Jive, and she helped things run smoothly backstage at Drama Club productions with the Stage Crew. '1S-P-l-R-I- T, it's great to see we've got it, was the cry of Sun Valley's most enthusiastic cheerleader, FRAN URBANI. Fran also displayed aflair for singing and dance in the Variety Show. However, her most notice- able asset was the amiable personality that endeared her to all. Serving as business manager of SPECTRUM and handling some financial aspects of running the senior class were some of the ways KAREN SHISLER polished her business skills for a planned career as a secretary. Well-known for his wit and congeniality, JERRY SAUERS brightened every oc- casion. Despite his easygoing personality, he treated athletics and academics seriously, earning him respect in both areas. As historian of the Future Nurse's Club, JANICE WELLS was one of Mrs. Kirchdoerfer's friendly aides who helped create that cheer- ful atmosphere that the nurse's office was known for. The Future Nurses Club at Sun Valley does a lot, but is not often heard about. The smiling girl selling you your football program may someday be smiling at you in her white nurse's uniform, as she is a future nurse. The girls work in the nurse's ojice, and a few girls each year get the opportunity to work with Dr. Walichuck. The girls compete on a point system for scholarships given by the club. Points are earned by attending meetings, helping in the nurses office, taking blood pressures, and by selling programs. After leaving Sun Valley on Friday afternoon, the members aboard the buses talked, sang, and gossiped-and all the fun did not stop when they reached their destination at 9 p.m. that night! In the morning everyone wearily readied themselves for skiing after devouring their breakfast. The twenty-minute bus ride to the Powder Ridge ski area was a quiet one, for everyone was either tired from last night's escapades or was nervously awaiting their first experience on the slopes. Since skiing was a new and frightening experience for many, lessons were given by an instructor at the bottom of the beginner's slope. After try- ing for an hour to teach us just how to stop, he finally gave up and set us free to learn the hard way-on our own! After gathering all their courage, one group rode the high ski IM and attempted to slide down the beginner's hill. Laughter, falling, screaming, hurting, and retrying all filled the after- noon with fun. After eating dinner that night, everyone set out for more fun. Swimming, dancing, and many parties were possibilities of entertainment for Saturday night. Sunday morning came too soon and it showed on everyone's face at breakfast. Skiing was planned and the most daring and least exhausted individuals went. At 4 p.m. everyone boarded the President: Sandy Sharpless - - Vice-President: Louise King bus to return home. What's the frst thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word wrestlerettes ? Girl wrestlers? No, these were a group of girls who took an active part in cheering our wrestling team on to victory. At every wrestling match, you could hear them yelling and cheering, even while they were taking stats. They even traveled to the away matches, to back up our team. These girls truly earned credit for encouraging spirit and an interest in wres- tling at the Valley. e my? 0? Tlx No more ring around the collar! z i S , Are you sure General Patton starred this way? PRES.,' QKNEELINGJ Wallace HIST.: Kelly Bradley, SEC. OPH OM ORE CLASS The future came into perspective as the sophomores began their year here at Sun Valley. Although be- wildered about the new atmosphere, with the help of Mr. Muller, their advisor, they were able to unite as a class. Representatives were chosen and ideas were proposed. Their first big project was the selling of poinsettias for Christmas. Soon the class was ready to begin the hard work and planning of the Soph Hop. On March 19, 1977, the Soph Hop, We May Never Pass This Way Again , was held. The Spectrum Staff of 1977 wishes the sophomore class much suc- cess in the next two years. . As members of the graduating Class of 1977 of Sun Valley High School, you have passed one of the great milestones of your life. You are to be commended for achieving the goal you first as- pired to 12 years ago. In future years, your paths will part as your classmates enter college or industry, become homemakers or professional people, enter the serv- ice or the arts. Many will remain in the old home- town. Gthers will move away, to the four corners of the earth. No matter what your choice of vocation or the site of your eventual home, our wish at Varano 8L Co. is that you will always be able to look back on your days at Sun Valley High and recall golden memories.
