PRINCIPALS HARRY T. ZECHMAN Principal East Stroudsburg State College Temple University KENNETH P. BOLYARD Acting Principal West Virginia University University of Delaware STEVE MEN ATI AN Assistant Principal Rhode Island College University of Rhode Island Pennsylvania State University RICHARD P. MILLER Administrative Assistant Bucknell University Villanova University The Principal's Message: I would like to mention, at this time, a few things you will want to think about as you prepare to take leave of us here at Sun Valley. Come with me, if you will, through life’s “Check-off System. To do this, let’s follow the system they use in preparing to send a missile aloft. The first point would be that of a career. Now you are here at Sun Valley finishing your public school education. But, what are you shooting for? Do you know what you would like to do later on? Think about it—plan a career. Select a goal and shoot for it. As you prepare to go, remember always that this is a fine country—the greatest country in the world, and you are a part of it. Remember that it was not built on a foundation of personal security, nor on socialism, nor on government subsidies; rather, it was built upon free enterprise and chal- lenge. As you set your goals for life, remember this tradition of the American Spirit and flavor your desires with it. Another check-off is the understanding of our attitude toward loyalty. Do you know what a “square is? Somehow, someone twisted that word around to mean something derisive. A square is one who is too conventional, too normal. In reality, it is an honor to be a “square. Look at some of the people in history who were “squares. Have you ever heard of Nathan Hale? He offered to give his life for his country, and he eventually did. Nathan Hale was a “square. Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry and Paul Revere were all “squares.” Remember, you could do worse than be a “square. The last check-off is to take a stand for something. A lot of things come up, and you do not know which side is right. Well, don’t let that cause you to go off and hide. In Greece, hundreds of years ago, they had what they called “city states” and lots of times there were rebellions. The rebels, when caught, were, by law, exiled, and those citizens who defended city government were made heroes. Do you know what happened to those who tried to stay on the fence and not take sides? They were ordered destroyed. Be brave enough to take a stand on something. Take a position. Don’t straddle the fence. Check the systems I have listed as the count down proceeds for you to face up to life. Have a goal— something to shoot at—hunt for happiness. Cultivate a loyalty to your country. Be a real square” and take a stand. If all these systems check out in order, then you are A-OK for the lift-off. Kenneth P. Bolyard Acting Principal
