“Man is the only creature whose emotions are entangled with his memory. And the anguish of memory is what we probably must pay for its pleasures, or whatever progress we gain from it. Bitter or sweet, we don’t want any part of life to be really over; it should always be available, if only through people who have shared it. When they go, they take a part of you with them. Even when something goes that has been a part of your life story—even Sun Valley High School. Gaze into the water, and let the past three years be reflected in your mind. Remember. . . Noisy student unions The soph float” Clowning around in gym class Willow Grove and the sophomore trip Falling down at ice-skating parties Walking through the “Tunnel of Love” That rabble-rousing walk-out Dancing at the Christmas Balls Hay rides and roasting hot-dogs Screaming at pep rallies Making 80,000 tissue flowers “I Had a Dream ’’ and the junior prom Picnics with a tug-of-war and watermelon Our Mr. Zechman Watching our team fight to win Freezing at football games The Senior Prom But the sun is setting and the reflections are no more SPECTRUM Volume 12 “REFLECTIONS” Dedication 4 Administration Faculty 6 Senior Section 34 School Life Organizations 124 Underclassmen 186 In Dedication Reaching out is what Mr. Hamlin is all about. Extending his hands to give us guidance, He leads us to knowledge, truth, and love. He is loud in voice But soft at heart. Acting dramatically in all that he does, He is forever our own “Chick Hamlin.” Because he cares so deeply We, the class of 1974, dedicate our yearbook to him. He’s that short man whom we all took for granted. In former years he was never in the limelight, But this year— We heard his southern accent We saw him patrolling the halls We felt his calm, collected and ambitious spirit. In appreciation for his hard work and sincerity with us, We honor Mr. Kenneth Bolyard. 5 ADMINISTRATION AND SCHOOL BOARD Arthur Kretz: Asst. Supt. (Business), Theodore Cramer: Asst. Supt. (Personnel) William Moser: Superintendent of Schools, Walter Rhoades: Asst. Supt. (Instruction) From the Desk of the Superintendent: Since the bleak days of 1959, when Sun Valley High School first opened its doors, we have come a long way. Our progress has been the result of a long succession of students like you who have contributed to the success of Sun Valley High School. Now it is your turn to take your place in so- ciety, mindful of what your Alma Mater has meant to you, with a firm resolve that Sun Valley High School will continue to promote those ideals of Knowledge, Truth, and Honor upon which its success has been founded. Wm. G. Moser Superintendent of Schools Bernard Nurry: Curriculum Director Harry Hill: Instructional Director Arthur Knowlton: Business Director 6 The Top Cats Stephen King, Franklin Turner, Billie Bowersox, Rev. Anthony Mattes, Frederick Smeeton, A. Lewis Boughner, Melvin Peterkin (Vice President), Edward Owen (President), Howard Turner (Secretary). 7 W U U U V V PRINCIPALS HARRY T. ZECHMAN Principal East Stroudsburg State College Temple University KENNETH P. BOLYARD Acting Principal West Virginia University University of Delaware STEVE MEN ATI AN Assistant Principal Rhode Island College University of Rhode Island Pennsylvania State University RICHARD P. MILLER Administrative Assistant Bucknell University Villanova University The Principal's Message: I would like to mention, at this time, a few things you will want to think about as you prepare to take leave of us here at Sun Valley. Come with me, if you will, through life’s “Check-off System. To do this, let’s follow the system they use in preparing to send a missile aloft. The first point would be that of a career. Now you are here at Sun Valley finishing your public school education. But, what are you shooting for? Do you know what you would like to do later on? Think about it—plan a career. Select a goal and shoot for it. As you prepare to go, remember always that this is a fine country—the greatest country in the world, and you are a part of it. Remember that it was not built on a foundation of personal security, nor on socialism, nor on government subsidies; rather, it was built upon free enterprise and chal- lenge. As you set your goals for life, remember this tradition of the American Spirit and flavor your desires with it. Another check-off is the understanding of our attitude toward loyalty. Do you know what a “square is? Somehow, someone twisted that word around to mean something derisive. A square is one who is too conventional, too normal. In reality, it is an honor to be a “square. Look at some of the people in history who were “squares. Have you ever heard of Nathan Hale? He offered to give his life for his country, and he eventually did. Nathan Hale was a “square. Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry and Paul Revere were all “squares.” Remember, you could do worse than be a “square. The last check-off is to take a stand for something. A lot of things come up, and you do not know which side is right. Well, don’t let that cause you to go off and hide. In Greece, hundreds of years ago, they had what they called “city states” and lots of times there were rebellions. The rebels, when caught, were, by law, exiled, and those citizens who defended city government were made heroes. Do you know what happened to those who tried to stay on the fence and not take sides? They were ordered destroyed. Be brave enough to take a stand on something. Take a position. Don’t straddle the fence. Check the systems I have listed as the count down proceeds for you to face up to life. Have a goal— something to shoot at—hunt for happiness. Cultivate a loyalty to your country. Be a real square” and take a stand. If all these systems check out in order, then you are A-OK for the lift-off. Kenneth P. Bolyard Acting Principal The Leaders of the Pack 9 WILLIAM H. In my eyes, we have achieved our goal. We did not reach our current position through an individual effort, but by the efforts of many individuals pull- ing together to make our class a success. After we leave the “Valley” hope- fully we will put to good use many of the skills we have been taught in school. I know that I will strive to better myself. We made the sophomore “float” for the homecoming festivities and won the twenty- five dollar prize, beating the juniors and seniors. We spon- sored an ice skating party and a cake bake that both turned out to be tremendous successes. Then suddenly it was February, and time for our Soph Hop. The decorating was hard work but most rewarding and beautiful the night of the hop. At last it was June, and our sophomore year culminated with the class trip to Willow Grove Park. 87 DONNA BINNIG An out-going person who represented our school in numerous activities ranging from hockey to Honor Society. Our team cer- tainly deserved the honor. They sweated through long, hard practices starting in Au- gust and lasting through the end of Novem- ber. With an 11-0 season, we can be sure that the guys’ practices were well worth it. The members of the 1973 team were a unique group. In almost every game, they were outweighed by their opponents. Yet the size problem was overcome by their speed and agility. The girls were charged four dollars to complete many projects. The projects included mak- ing ecology seed kits, dried flower arrange- ments, flower corsages, holiday door dec- orations, indoor decorations, terrariums, and growing herb gardens. Each member put her accomplishments to good use and many of the girls gave them away as gifts. It is a known fact that someday all of them will be fine homemakers. Good luck girls. The band marched at all of the football games and participated in many community parades, including ones held at New Holland, Collingdale, Christiana, and Brookhaven. They also went into field competitions at Widener, Marple and the Vet Stadium. The band is also the main cheering section at the pep rallies. During the 1973-74 season, the band motto was “The Year of Truth.” This was the last year that the band will be as it has been from its creation. A tremendous under- taking is currently underway led by the band’s sponsors, Mr. Joseph DeAugustine and Mr. Norman Fehr. Starting in 1974-75, the band will include 40 flag girls, 20 pom pom girls, no more than 20 majorettes, 24 rifles, and a small flag-carrying colorguard along with the 96-102 playing members. They hope to compete against the best bands' in the nation and with much hard work and patience, we’re sure they’ll succeed. Good luck to them! However, competitions were started for dance bands which are now known as stage bands. The stage band enables musicians to pursue other forms of music such as jazz, rock, popular and contemporary instead of just marching and concert music. Our stage band has won the Ridley Jazz Festival for the past two years. In the spring of ’74 they also entered the Brandywine High School and the Beaver College Competitions, and sponsored one at Sun Valley on April 30. 177 Band Fair The band needs an enormous amount of money to func- tion successfully each year. Part of the money comes from their annual band fair. The parents of the band members supervise the various booths and the band members help to work in them. Anyone who attended the fair will not for- get seeing his favorite band member getting soaked in the dunking machine, or buying a balloon from the polka-dot- ted clown. 178 STAGE CREW: lights, cameras, action! Young Students who are generally not interested in furthering their high school education can further their future career by electing to go on work experience in their senior year. Mr. James Collier likes the students to work at a job that will be a learning ex- perience. The members leave Sun Valley at 11:20 each day and then proceed to work for a minimum of 500 hours for the year. 185 UNDERCLASSMEN Juniors Sophomores 188-195 196-203 Juniors Class of ’75 BOTTOM ROW— Ed Fisher, President; Ginny Gadzala, Secretary; Joanne Lohin, Treasurer; Mr. Rau, Advisor. SECOND ROW— Sharon Erb, Historian; Mary Ann Tiberi, Vice-President. The class of ’75 has come a long way in the past two years. As sophomores, they spon- sored such activities as roller-skating and dances. As juniors, they continued to be ac- tive sponsoring more dances, and a raffle at Christmas time for a “basket of cheer” (con- taining records and a free pass to either the soph hop, junior or senior prom). Their ju- nior prom was a success also. It seems to the Spectrum staff that the class of ’75 will make a fine group of seniors next year. C. Ackerman P. Acton V. Armstrong W. Arthur K. Atherholt J. Sophomores: Class of ’76 SEA TED— Allison Reid, Vice-President; Terri Feinberg, President; Michele Dertadian, Secretary. BACK ROW— Jeannie McElwee, Historian; Mr. Grassano, Advisor; Bonnie Levitski, Treasurer. The class of ’76 has had a very exciting Sophomore year. They have been involved in many activities in- cluding “Rent a Soph” day, sponsoring a dance after a football game, and the selling of select items in a kit, and candy apples after school. They also sponsored a concert given by the group “Free Fare,” and co-spon- sored a roller skating party with the junior class. Their last major project was the planning and decorating for the Soph Hop, which was held in March. The theme was “Saturday in the Park” and everyone who attended had a great time. The Spectrum Staff would like to wish the Class of ’76 success for their remaining two years in Sun Valley. i% G. Abbott S. Achuff K. Acton D. Adams J. Agostinelli T. Aulisa G. Anderson M. Antes D. The staff would especially ce to express our thanks to our advisor id friend, Miss Peggy Dougherty, who is certainly played an important role in le production of the book; Mr. Ronald esotski for the use of the darkroom; Mrs. orinne Byar for sharing the art room 'fice with us; and everyone who has con- ibuted in some way to help produce an inual that reflects the memories of the ast year here at Sun Valley. The 1974 Spectrum Staff : t It can be said that the class of ’74 is the best class that Sun Valley has ever produced—because we are. We have sponsored more activities and enthusiasti- cally participated in more school affairs than any other class. Oh, we’ve certainly had our ups and downs. We entered Sun Valley as little sophomores, and tended to stay in our own cliques. Yet even then we were marked as being special, because no matter how much we fought, the finished products were al- ways sensational. Time went on and somehow we started to work together. Our jealousies and criticisms receded into the background and we began to appreciate the good that everyone of us offered. Usually the seniors are the “dead-heads” of the school, but that theory was proved wrong. Our class showed that the seniors are the leaders of Sun Valley. This yearbook holds our memories. We sincerely hope that the spirit the class of ’74 kindled will con- tinue to burn in all future classes. “Though summer turns to winter and the present disappears. The laughter we were glad to share Will echo through the years. Though summer nights and autumn days May find us going our separate ways, WE WILL HAVE THESE MOMENTS TO REMEMBER ....” V As our caps are cast down Our hearts ache with longing. Memories fill the June air. Yet as the rose blossoms, We will continue to grow more beautiful. Nourished by Sun Valley— We are only beginning to shine
