time it was, and what a time it was. it was a time of innocence, a time of confidence, long ago it must be, i have a photograph ... preserve your memories, they're all that's left of you. most of the copy in the 1972 spectrum has been taken from or based upon the works of simon and garfunkel. Bookends Spectrum '72 student life ................................. 4 seniors ..................................... 62 underclassmen .............................. 120 sports ..................................... 140 organizations .............................. 164 dedication . . . to some, a word that means, be a nice guy teacher to the senior class; to some, a feeling they have only for themselves. but to him . . . a special kind of devotion to each student; long processes of scheduling and counsel- ing without a word of complaint; a healthy smile and wave as you pass each other through the halls. we, the class of 1972, have chosen to dedicate our yearbook to one who has al- ready dedicated himself to us. Harry T. Zechman Jr. in appreciation .. . because of his concern about present day education, because of the active role he plays with our local government, because he is dedicated in keeping our en- vironment a healthy one, because he is a powerful leader, and because he is a concerned teacher and good friend, it is with the greatest admiration and respect that we dedicate the 1972 spectrum to . . . Robert L. Collier And so my fantasy becomes reality, and I must be what 1 must be, and face tomorrow. 1973 Ring Dance A time when the Junior Class gathers together to receive their rings. A ''el- ebration to make your class ring a warm and meaningful memory. A new tradition begun by the Class of '72 and carried on by the Class of '73. Exchange Students, 1971-72 Once again, bun Valley welcomed two new friends. They were Jasna Zagorac from Yugoslavia, and Jean-Marc Birraux, from France. Our exchange students this year joined the rest of the senior class in Septem- ber, and remained at Sun Valley for the en- tire school year. Jasna, who enjoys piano, studying lan- guages, and literature, and was a member of the French and Ski Clubs, found life at Sun Valley very different from that of her own high school. We do not change our classes every period as you do here. We also are not permitted to choose our courses. However, I feel we learn more with the required subjects in my school at home. Jean-Marc, who was also a member of the Ski Club, as well as the cross country and track teams, and a Spectrum photographer, came to us from a school in one of the larg- est cities of France. Of school in France, Jean says, Unlike here, we have a different schedule of classes every day; however, I think the system here is better. We start school at 8:00 a.m.; break from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., and finish school at 5:00 p.m. The tests here are too easy, in France they are too hard! Both of our exchange students agreed that the student-teacher relationship here is much more personal than in their own schools. Neither one had ever seen a pep ralley or a football game before coming to Sun Valley, and both looked forward to the various dances and proms. Of course, both missed family and friends, but most of all Jean missed his motorcycle. Without it, he had to stay home most of the time! Life is our most valuable asset! Although we have no control over its beginning and very little over its ending, we do have significant control of it while it exists. Every age of the world has experienced difficulties and problems; thus, every age of our personal life has difficulties and problems that must be encountered. Vet, while life brings to all of us many assigned responsibilities, each of us has the opportunity to engage in learning, developing competence commensurate with our own special interests, and, to the extent of our abilities, to become creative and successful in what we perform. Call it a purpose, an objective, an aim in life, a yearning — call it what you will, but with this opportunity there exists a need! Somehow in the days of youth, youth must be given — or caused to obtain moti- vation to seek, to search, and to achieve not only that which is assigned but that which will cause improvement. Hopefully Sun Valley has given to you this willingness to dedicate your best effort, knowing full well that you exist to fill a need — not just to consume but to produce and not only to accept but to give! It is a group of extraordinary people who, in the estimation of the faculty, have made their stay at Sun Valley something special. In athletics, club work, student government, or superior academic achievement, each student has given back to Sun Valley a part of himself. Along with service to school, the characteristics of integrity, sincerity, and leadership were important criteria in the selection. The faculty has chosen to honor twenty nine seniors whose actions have distinguished them above the rest. These individuals are now presented as the Who's W'ho of the Class of 1972. x ,;V JOYCE DEWEES RODNEY FORD W h O s W h o MIKE KERTIS DEBBIE GRAF GREG MELTON Who's Who LINDA MILHOUS SHARON MILHOUS JUDIE MORGAN STEVE OSBORNE MARIA URBANI LORRI WILLIAMS G1NV ZIEGLER DONNA VON ZECH I FLORENCE WRZESNIEWSKI GINNY WHITE W h O s W h o CAROLYN ZUKOWSKI DAWN ACHTERMANN ROBIN ADAMSON DIANE ACHTERMANN THOMAS ACHUFF FRANCIS DAWN DOLORES ACHTERMANN Dawn Well what do you know.” Pep Club 2; F.H.A. 3. But either way you look at it, it means the same thing: For the staff, it meant long nights and weekends with day old pizzas and cokes; to you, the senior or underclassman, it meant great anticipation; listening to the rumors, or perhaps spreading them. But to everyone, it means Sun Valley, the school year 1971-72, and the memories that each one of us has.
