Spectrum 1971 FOLLOW THE SUN Seniors.................................. 8 Sports.................................. 76 Student Life .......................... 100 Organizations ......................... 110 Faculty ............................... 138 Underclassmen.......................... 162 Mrs. Shirley Masse DEDICATION In Appreciation The Class of 1971 has chosen to acknowledge the guid- ance and assistance of Mrs. Shirley Masse. Our advisor for three years, she has always shown deep understanding and sincere interest. To the Class of 1971, Mrs. Masse is something special. We take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Masse for a terrific and deeply appreciated job. Miss Marguerite Dougherty Without the loyal devotion of one woman. Spectrum 1971 would have remained merely a dream. To say that Miss Dougherty has given her all is an understatement. Long hours and exhausting weekends are only a fraction of her contribution. We shall always remember Miss Dougherty, not only as our spiritual advisor and censor, but as our friend. Surprise, Aunt Peggy! DEDICATION In Appreciation There only exists your shadow when you turn your back to the sun. FOLLOW THE SUN Across the heavens, In pursuit of the sun. JOANNE MARIE ACHUFF Jo F.H.A.3. In Memory During our past three years at Sun Valley all of us have had get involved in our various class activities. Even though there for everyone, most of us let this opportunity pass by. Involvement in high school activities is not the most important thing in our lives, but it will get us ready for what really counts — society. Today we are entering into a world with many problems: racism, pollution, and poverty just to mention a few. The trend in society today is to let the other guy get our problems straight. Let us be against the trend and get involved. The problems of society are not going to be solved by the other guy; we should all take a share in solving these prob- lems because it will affect each one of our lives. Let us, the Class of 1971, realize that to make this world a better place we have to get involved. lo ass of 1971 President's Message Get Involved Seniors Class Of 1971 Vincent Inzerillo President Thomas Gadzala Vice President Mary Lenza Treasurer Judy Wells Secretary Dawn Clement Historian Mrs. Shirley Masse Advisor 63 DARING TO LOOK THE SUN IN THE FACE AND STEAL IT'S RADIANCE. . . radiance in academics . . radiance in extra-curricular activities . radiance in self-discipline radiance in integrity and respect . . radiance in Sun Valley spirit Who's Who — Class of 1971 KIM ADAMSON — because she was captain of a great cheerleading squad; because her reign over Homecoming made the day so special; be- cause she gave her all to the Valley to prove it was the best. She is seventeen year old Maria Alice Per- eira de Sousa from Sao Paulo, Brazil. In Brazil, Maria Alice lives with her par- ents, one brother and two sisters. She speaks five languages: English, Portu- guese, Italian, French, and Spanish. After an examination, Maria Alice plans to en- ter the College of Communications in Brazil to study law. Maria Alice's interests include horseback riding, sewing, and soccer. In Brazil when there is a soccer game, everything stops. Nobody goes to work; nobody studies. They just watch the game, says Maria Alice. Of the United States, Maria Alice says, All my life I have wanted to visit Ameri- ca, and know everything about it. I haven't been disappointed by any aspect of this country. With a gleam in her eye, she added I love the snow. I never saw it before. It's crazy. All the rays come together, A single brightness, When the sun shines. NURRY Administration Assistant — Curriculum You are now living in the midst of a progressive era of extensive and rap- id change. Yesterday you erred; yesterday you did not achieve as you might have achieved; yesterday there were omissions and wasted time. However, today — which marks the culmination of your learning years at Sun Valley High School — is a new day with new opportunities, new hours and minutes, new occasions. Every age of your personal life is a time to build for a brighter future, for as you gained knowledge to read and to spell in your childhood, so what you have accomplished here in high school will affect your tomorrow. Each period in your life contains difficulties and problems that must be faced; yet the people who have achieved the elusive quality of success are those who never could bear defeat — their failures only made them strong for the tasks they had to experience. Make yourself achieve; drive hard and persistently. You have all the opportunities. You may take advantage of them, or you may let them slip idly away. Success has never been achieved in a day or a week, or a year — but you can effectively attain it. It is worthy to utilize this significant quotation as a guideline now that you are beginning your post-high school career: “I cannot do every- thing — but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do — and I will do! HARRY T. ZECHMAN, JR. Principal East Stroudsburg B.S. Temple University M.S. Graduation for the class of 71 is a culmination of many activities by the mem- bers of the class. Each time this yearbook is opened in later years these same students will reminisce about the trials and accomplishments encountered in their high school days. This luxury of reminiscence can only last for a few fleeting moments, because the real challenge always lies ahead. Hopefully every individual has gleaned a variety of asthetic and intellectual experiences that will enable him to make his mark in society. Young people have a reassuring tendency to take a fresh view of life. Capably equipped and possessing an intellectual curiosity the opportunities are unlim- ited for each one to share in making this world a better place to live. Our plur- alistic society needs and welcomes the different talents of each man. It is the responsibility of each one of you to contribute your talent towards the better- ment of mankind. BRUCE D. WILLIAMS Assistant Principal Villanova University B.S. Temple University M.Ed. Yesterday you began a new life in the world of books and teachers. Today you are completing that phase of education, but tomorrow you will confront the world-at-large. Many things have taken place in your twelve years of education both in school and in society. As time passed by you were challenged many times and you had to make a decision. You sought happiness and success, but at times you met despair of uncertainty. How many of you stepped forward to try again? Were you agressive and ambitious to realize the many endless opportunities being offered? Did you just live for today or did you plan for tomorrow? Sometimes, in this world of today with its problems of pollution, rebellion, Vietnam, etc., you ask Is it really worth it? But in looking at everything real- istically, in an advancing world, man is always faced with problems and deci- sions and to look ahead. At Sun Valley, you were challenged many times — not only by your teachers, but by your fellow peers. Many of you advanced yourselves by accepting the challenge of new courses and by taking part in many social, academic, and ath- letic activities. You participated in developing and adding to the Spirit of the Valley . We hope that your leadership and example as seniors and now gradu- ates will stimulate the underclassmen to follow in that same continuing and growing Spirit. I hope that you stay active and remember Sun Valley — always look ahead — don't stop learning — don't stand still. These few years you have spent are only a beginning; and the end is not yet in sight over the horizon. You have been prepared to begin; only you can decide where you will end. To each one of you, I extend my best wishes for success, good health, and lasting happiness. JOSEPH J.F.KULICK Assistant Principal Villanova University B.S. Temple University M.Ed. 142 ROBERTA. Spectrum '71 is a reality only because of the collective effort of so many. Throughout the year, countless persons have sacri- ficed their time and energy endeavoring to make this book a portrait of Sun Valley 1971. To those people we would like to express our sincere appreciation for all they have done. Our special thanks go to Miss Marguerite Dougherty; the staff's sponsor and business advisor; to Mr. William O'Brien — our American Man; Mr. William Faulkner, who lost his office to the staff; to Mr. Kenneth Miller, for the use of the dark room; and to Kent, Bob, and Vance for their efforts in financ- ing the Yearbook. We would also like to acknowledge the ad- ministration and faculty, patrons, and the numerous friends that have assisted in this endeavor.
