Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1970 volume:

sunrise . . . the day begins, promising new and differenTexperiences, here they come — the young are entering life what lies ahead? where will they go and what will they do? what will they leave behind? sunset this same dawn breeds another feeling — dusk; a day that is no more, a place where time has gone, the present — a combination of what was and what will be. crossroads . .. in this dim brilliance, this beginning and end, together we are lost in a limbo of past and future; these two tenses dominate the third, here our shared, beaten road diverges into many narrow untried paths; here we see ourselves as individuals in an organism fast becoming a part of our lives — Sun Valley High School Spectrum 1970 in your hands I out line of a year profile of a school story of the people and events which make both unique, different from any other. enter the young! Yes, you’re right; they still do this dedication thing in yearbooks. Why? Because, for every class that graduates (and writes a yearbook) there is one faculty member who stands out in par- ticular, one man or woman who has had a strong effect on the class. The Class of 1970 has chosen to acknowledge the guidance and assistance of Mr. Francis Dow- ney. Our adviser for three years, this man has been interested in the class and has given of him- self. To refer to Mr. Downey is to draw reference to a part of ourselves, because he has left his mark upon the Class as a unit and as individuals. From directing class functions to patroling the lunchroom to coaching the basketball teams, Mr. Downey has been with the Class of 1970. He has shared our interests, concerns, and future plans. In this way we, the Senior Class of Sun Valley High School, express our appreciation, by dedicating the 1970 Spectrum to Mr. Francis Downey. 4 5 I use Ajax, and I bet my hands are as soft as yours! 1. 2. 3,4. and where did dot 5 go? 7 Seniors Well, here they come; Some with questions, some decisions. Here they come; Some with acts, some with visions . . . To win a prize that no one’s ever won! 11 13 w A - On the sixth day of Christmas six gccsc! And how is my little bacteria doing today? But. I didn’t get to the punch line yet! It goes up and down and back and forth By the time I gel to Phoenix PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE To my fellow classmates: Here they come! Yes, here we come. 7 he seniors of Sun Valley are starting a new life among new people, new situations, new problems. For us. Sun Valley will soon be a thing of the past, existing only as a memory in the pages of this book or through recollections of the experiences we have shared. Sun Valley High School has meant different things to different people to some, it has been a way of life, to others, the drudgery of having to get an education. I hope that your years at Sun Valley have meant commitment to and involvement in something, whether it was the band, athletics, student government, or some other organization of the school. This is more important than any other aspect of an education the drive to become involved, the willingness to commit your whole life to something you believe in. Let us, the members of the class of 1970, carry this spirit of involvement into our separate futures. We must be willing to commit our lives. Perhaps this idea is best expressed in the words of the theme song: Not only learn to think but to care; Not only learn to think but to dare. I hope that this phrase becomes a reality for all of us. No matter what you do during life, the most important thing is that you are dedicated to it, that it fulfills you as a person and gives you an outlet for all your concern, all your talent, all your hope. Self-fullfillment is the thing. Be ashamed to die un- til you have found a reason to live. Business MR. WILLIAM MOSER Superintendent of Schools MR. ROBERT FITHIAN Athletic Director MR. HARRY HILL Admin. Asst. Instruction MR. ARTHUR KNOWLTON Admin. Asst. Business Education has no ending, and, as such, knows no boundaries. It is not something that is done for a student or to a student; it is no putting on of robes or pouring in of information. Education is what the student does for himself in the way of developing his own powers. Teachers can help, so can a curriculum; however, ulti- mately the problem lies with the students. If a student is to be an educated man, then he must give his best effort to disciplining his mind to the point where it becomes an effective mechanism — knowing full well that the trained mind can be the most powerful instrument in the entire world. It is my wish that each of you shall attempt to attain the highest ideal of Sun Valley Senior High School — scholastic integrity! After three years of learning at Sun Valley High School, it might be well to note that no learning is worth much unless it has left you with a doubt, a reason to seek further, to maintain curiosity. As the Ancients put it, the consciousness of ignorance is the beginning of knowledge. May you remember this as you begin to actively par- ticipate in an uncertain world of incredible change. To quote an old Chinese proverb, “A thousand mile journey starts with one step.” In a few days, you as a graduate will step forward and complete that first step. You will have completed twelve years of education to meet this first accomplishment notice how long it took you to do this. Just as man took his first step on the moon this year, this was by no means a rush job. In comparison, you must pace yourselves to run no faster than you have strength or means. There are some things for which you must be willing to wait; do not be short-sighted in settling for something second best or far infe- rior when, by more willingness to work and to wait, you could acquire a greater competence and more of the lasting to avoid unwise commitments and extravagances, to invest time and effort in preparation for the future. The surpassing satisfaction of approaching your real potential is more im- portant than speed; more important than insisting on everything right now. It would be great, in a way, if every person could move directly to his in- tended objective without delay and disappointment, without any slowing down or setback; but few of us have lived this way and surely we would not, in fact, develop in character if everything were always easy. As Emerson once said, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it.” CLERICAL STAFF GUIDANCE COUNSELORS MRS. RUTH WINBOURN MRS. RUTH RHOADES MR. ROBERT DIEHL MR. A WORD OF THANKS You hold in your hands the 1970 Spectrum, the end result of many hours of collective work, concern, and hope on the part of many people. In the midst of the threatening deadlines, countless layouts, and inevitable decisions, there has been a group of individuals who have stood by the yearbook and seen the work through to its completion. Our special thanks go to Miss Marguerite Dougherty, the staff’s sponsor, spiritual advisor, and all-around trouble-shooter; Mr. William O’Brien, who has acted as liaison between the Spectrum and the American Yearbook Company; Mr. Kenneth Miller, for the use of the darkroom and help with the photography staff; Zamsky Studios, responsible for the senior portraits; and Mrs. Daniels, who “Graced the senior superlative pictures for most talkative and most quiet. We would also like to acknowledge the administration and faculty, numerous friends and patrons, and people we don’t know from Adam for their cooperation, encouragement, and assistance in this endeavor. To all those who have been named and to those whom time and space prevent mentioning, thanks again. — Best Wishes Class Of’70 Dairy Queen Village Green THE RETAIL STORE EMPLOYEES UNION Local No. 1349 RET AIL CLERKS INTERNA TIONA L ASSOCIA T ON The International Union Dedicated solely to the welfare of Retail Employees - Six Hundred Thousand (600,000) strong.
