SPECTRUM Sun Valley High School Green Ridge—Chester, Pennsylvania Volume II 1964 Foreword The pathways through high school are mem- orable ones. We hope that through this book we have recorded them well enough to keep them alive for decades to come. To help remember these memorable pathways, we present to you, the 1964 Spec!rum. U. N. AND AGENCIES t Table of Contents Administration 5 Faculty 9 Seniors .... 21 Underclassmen 69 Organizations 81 Activities 101 Sports 117 Advertisers 137 Dedication His interest in his students and his eagerness to help them have en- deared him to all who have come under his influence. Because he means so much to so many, we, the students of Sun Val- ley High School, dedicate the 1964 Spectrum to Mr. Joseph De Augus- tine. 4 ADMINISTRATION Principar s Message MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL In a book entitled The Secret Garden by Frances Burnett, which I recently read, I came upon a sentence of such simple truth but great impact that I wish to pass it on to you. I pray that its implications and ramifications shall serve as the capstone of your learning. The writer states, At first people refuse to believe that a strange new thing can be done; then they begin to hope it can be done; then it is done and all the world wonders why it was not done centuries ago.” The message, as I see it for our Sun Valley graduating class, is this: dream boldly; believe implicity in that dream; work tirelessly for its realization. In this dynamic era in which we now live, the human mind can scarcely con- ceive of anything that is impossible of human achievement. We, ourselves, may never spin into reality the things we envision, but, if it is worth doing and has value for society, someone is going to do it. Remember, it can be done! We at Penn-Delco, and specifically at Sun Valley High School, have tried to provide you with the intellectual equipment for realizing your dream. This is the beginning. The courage, the tenacity and the faith that you need, you must find within yourself. Finding them is the superb culmination we wish for you. Benjamin H. Napier 6 District Coordinators WALTER M. DAWSON 20 “The Torch Is Passed” You and I have just lived through one of the most horrendous events in the annals of American his- tory, the villainous assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. In life, JFK championed the causes of human freedom and world peace; in death, he is martyred by them. These are just and provocative causes. They are causes toward which all men should aspire. Civil denials, political tension, social unrest, the historic march on Washington, the sporadic hot and cold wars, the death of JFK: These are the times that try men’s souls.” As graduates, let us answer our beloved JFK’s challenge: Ask yourself not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” The Torch is Passed. Let us seize it. Let us hold it aloft. Let us stand as sentinels of freedom, edu- cation, and world peace. Let this be our personal legacy: keep the commemorative flame ablaze. The Torch is Passed.” John William Daily President Senior Class 22 Diane Reynolds Secretary Judith Conner Vice President Mrs. Alexander Advisor Mr. Moran Advisor Joseph Diggins Assistant Treasurer Sandra Craig Treasurer 3n ftl cm ortam AlLcrt Filoreto Outside of his exploits on the football field for St. James High and Pennsyl- vania Military College, he never did anything great in the usual sense of the word. He wasn't a war hero and he was much too young—only 23—to have made his mark in any other field of endeavor. He was never a soldier and never was decorated for valor. Yet the courage he displayed in the last few months of his life is seldom equaled—on the field of battle, deep in a coal mine, or in outer space. He set an example in faith, courage, and just plain all-around goodness that will endure forever. Dr. Clarene Moll, president of PMC called him The most popular and best- liked student at PMC in the past decade. Everyone who ever came in contact with him is a better persons because of it. EXCERPTS: Ed Gebhart, Another View, Delaware County Daily News, Wednesday, August 28, 1963. 24 In Memoriam Before she died, Sybil told her mother I'm not afraid to die for in Heaven I'll be able to walk. That was our Sybil. She, who never missed a school dance even though she had to attend in a wheelchair. She, who exuded warmth and congeni- ality—left us all richer for having known her. Coaches Moses and Stiller taught the neophytic matmen many skills. In addition to those designed for physical proficiency, the grapplers were schooled in the sport s history, etiquette, and terminology. Our bright spots were a 2-0 victory over neighboring Chichester as well as a 1-1 tie with Media. Under the direction of Mrs. Marion Metzgar, the team fin- ished with a 1-5-1 record. The Junior Varsity considerably improved the performances of past years with a 3-3-1 log. Led by Mrs. Eunice Hollinger, the scrappy J.V. generates optimism for next season. The Vanguards’ biggest thrill came in a 24-22 squeaker, when they downed Lans- downe-Aldan, handing them their first loss in three seasons. After a rather slow start, Mrs. Black's junior var- sity squad picked up two wins at Chi and Chester s expense. With a good nucleus of returning players, the coaches can expect another fine season from the Van- guard basketeers. Effervescent? Exuberant? Fitting words for Sun Valley’s energetic twelve. Guided by Mrs. Judith Alexander, this year’s squad sponsored a Sadie Hawkins shindig, and feted the boy's basketball team with a victory dance to honor their win over Interboro. Through posters, practices, pep rallies, and parades, the 1963- 64 Squad generated enthusiasm as they sparked their teams to VIC- TORY! 134 Janice Vent Lenore Warren JoAnn Burtelle Co-captain Cheerleaders Donna Logan Captain Sandra Craig Caro!
