The auditorium was used as assembly room and was pro- vided with a spacious, well-equipped stage. June 17, 1941, was a gloomy day for the residents of Sumner. Their fine school building was completely des- troyed by fire, For the next five fears grade school was held in a small brown uouse just cast of the old school site and high school v:s in session in the large house known as the Barnes house. These were Htrjingu years for the teachers and pupils. L new gymnasium, the one pre- sently being used, was built in l9Q5. A By the fall of 1948 a nice new building had been coma pleted on West Locust Street--the old school site. Both parents and pupils were justly proud of this building. It is a two-story, yellow-brick building containing thirty rooms. During the past year the appearance of this pred sent building has been greatly enhanced. ill Each room was painted in a cool, pastel shade of color chosen by the instructor in charge. C25 The floors were laid with var- ious colors of tile with different floor designs in each room. Q55 The intercommunioation system has brought about more efficiency in the Sumner schools.
