The musical highlight of'the fall semester was presented in the form was presented by the Richard Vowells at the ers includes the Old children, mother goose ers and live Christmas of a Christmas operetta. This third and fourth grades with piano. An assortment of chsractf Woman Who lives in a Shoe, her personalitifs, Santa Claus help- accessories. One of the children shares his food with the birds and rabbits who are his friends. But he remains sick and weak for lack of needed nourishment. However the poor family of the Cld Woman is rewarded with a very delightful Christmas tree as wonderful as anyone could have. This operetta is entitled NChristmas for othersn by Meyer and Carrington. Parts were written for vocal solos, chorus, and speaking parts. The graders were dressed in their proper costumes. The spectators iwcre treated by ear and eye to an asscrtmcnt of English walnuts, popcorn ladies, cranberries, snowflakes, tree lights, all of these personified. The 3. P. A. had the band. A bake sale girls chorus and three another event to raise money for included thelnnd, were Patty clarinets. on February l4 grade soloists Heath, cornetg Susan English and Mary . These Atkins The first contest event was on March is when three high school soloists went to Casey to compete for dis- trict honors. Unfortunately, no one qralifiei for the state contest. Soloists Hcre '-Af Gilbert Fiirel, D ritoncg Donna Mean, clarinetg Russell Atkins, sazapheie. ...- The grale school district contest was Held at Fairfield, March 27. Here Petty Heath, ccrnet: Susan English and Mary Atkins, clarinets, competed 11: pre high ratings to qualify for the state contest. Patty and Susan survived and wont to the state contest at Marion, Hay 7. Finally Susan English ended up with a I rating. The third event of the year sponsored by the B, P. A. went off on March l7 known as a Jabberwock, This peculiar situation of an evening of competing grerps of people who are free to present any kind of 1 slit to last about ten rinutes. Any club, church organ zqtion, schocl class or any other similar group is qualified to

enter. About a dozen groups participated and at the outcome the top three were as follows: First prize pl5 Saturday Nite Gang Second prize S10 Latin Class Third prize as Lukin P. T. A. This event will be an annual affair. The Spring Concert took place in the gym on April lO. The program consisted of band girls chorus, German band, brass sextotte, clarinet trio, clarinet, baritone and saxaphone solos, and two grade vocalists. Richard Vowells accompanied the chorus, and the soloists who were Gilbert Deimel, Donna Mean and Russell Atkins. The two graders were Linda Brian and Linda Young at the piano. This concert was well varied and entertaining. The Junior play on April 17 haisome.musied.support from the band and a guest entertainer whnwas invited by Shirley Poland. Cheva Schroyer, a young girl of about ll years of age, sang some songs to the accompaniment of her mother on the guitar. The activity fund of the school helped to bring some good vocal music in the way of the Apollo quartet from Wesleyan College. Two big music festivals were held May 5 and May 12 at Clay City and St. Francisville respectively. The band festival at Clay City combined forces of Kinmundy, Farina, Louisville, Clay City, Cisne, Noble and Sumner, all members of the Midland Trail Conference. Mr. Wyman from the University of Illinois was hired tpdireet this massed band. The festival at St. Francisville QS known as the Lawrence County Music Festival to be presented as an annual event. Barns and choruses were oomhiaod from Lawrenceville, St. rrancisville, Bridgeport and Sumner. There the music directors shared the podium in lending the massed bard new choruses, The music arogram continued to the very list day of school as thf girls chorus sang at the Bacon vureate May 24 and the bard played at the High School Co'men:e- mont May 29. Richard Howells was kept busy consi.rtly as he played at both events in addition to th: Trade School Commencement.
