I .L '--JJ.: V I.. 4 . .. - The first music activity for ,the year 1952-1955 occurred Gctcber 17 when the Southland Quartet appear- ed through the sponsorship of the Band Parents Associa- tion. Chl: group of parents is dedicated to the task of raising wcney to support the band by purchasing unih forms and y7A6P items, Having this quartette to put on some gooo qnlpel music was one way of raising funds. A few lays later, Octoter 20, the Samuels Music Co. put on an instrumental display for the purpose of getting new beginning students. New and rebuilt in- struments wcre bought by students in the grade school. The band gave its first public appearance with the first home basketball game of the season, November 7. The game season included about a dozen games at home which for each one the band played. A German band was organizedtn supnlemert the other ensemble groups - brass sextotte and clarinet trio. The musical highlight of'the fall semester was presented in the form was presented by the Richard Vowells at the ers includes the Old children, mother goose ers and live Christmas of a Christmas operetta. One of the children shares his food with the birds and rabbits who are his friends. But he remains sick and weak for lack of needed nourishment. However the poor family of the Cld Woman is rewarded with a very delightful Christmas tree as wonderful as anyone could have. This operetta is entitled NChristmas for othersn by Meyer and Carrington. Parts were written for vocal solos, chorus, and speaking parts. The graders were dressed in their proper costumes. The spectators iwcre treated by ear and eye to an asscrtmcnt of English walnuts, popcorn ladies, cranberries, snowflakes, tree lights, all of these personified. The 3. P. A. had the band. A bake sale girls chorus and three another event to raise money for included thelnnd, were Patty clarinets. on February l4 grade soloists Heath, cornetg Susan English and Mary . These Atkins The first contest event was on March is when three high school soloists went to Casey to compete for dis- trict honors. Unfortunately, no one qralifiei for the state contest. Soloists Hcre '-Af Gilbert Fiirel, D ritoncg Donna Mean, clarinetg Russell Atkins, sazapheie. ...- The grale school district contest was Held at Fairfield, March 27. Here Petty Heath, ccrnet: Susan English and Mary Atkins, clarinets, competed 11: pre high ratings to qualify for the state contest. Patty and Susan survived and wont to the state contest at Marion, Hay 7. Finally Susan English ended up with a I rating. The third event of the year sponsored by the B, P. A. went off on March l7 known as a Jabberwock, This peculiar situation of an evening of competing grerps of people who are free to present any kind of 1 slit to last about ten rinutes.
