lm H Jrkrfrm Pr seem LITERARY mfg DEPARTME T Lonfuerus say Those who burn mrdnrght orl rn vouth never freeze rn old age JACK THE FISHERMAN Please do not go Jack A storm rs blow rng, up Mary s pleadrng was all rn varn for her brother Jack had made up hrs mrnd Every day srnce Marys mother and father had gone down the coast to the town of G oucester Jack had gone out rn hrs dory to fish Marys mother and father had never returned for somewhere along the way therr small boat had been smashed rshore on the sound There was no money md poor Jack gave up hrs schoolrng to fish end get enough to support lrttle Mary As Jack pushed hrs dory off the wrnd .rs rt blew across the bay caught Marys harr and drred the tears as they fell down hrr face She was afrard Afrard because the sky was growrng blacker and the wrnd stronger Suddenly Jacks dory was out of srght It had rounded the bend Mary stood rlone on the beach Wrth a merry song on hrs lrps hrs face rn the wrnd and nets set Jack headed for the fishrng grounds He was unmrndful of the heavy wrnd and the sky whrch grew darker wrth every passrng mrnute for hrs determrnatron to succeed rn gettrng a brg load of frsh surpassed all these It was more than two hours before Jack .rrrrved at the fishrng grounds for hrs small boat had made slow progress He finally reached hrs favorrte spot and lowered hrs nets For nearly three hours he fished It had been a good day for the fish had been plentrful It was late afternoon when he pulled 'rnchor and started home A he went out of the quiet harbor the splashrng waves met hrm The wrnd was blowrng a gale by now the waves dashed hrgh over the top of the boat Jack pulled wrth all hrs mrght It was not far to the quret harbor of Frshersvrllage but the wrnd blew fiercely and the waves were hrgh The rarn came down rn torrents He could not go back for Mary needed food and there was no money He must go on' As he went around the bend he saw hrs own quret and peaceful harbor but he also saw the huge rocks as they rose only a few fee out of the water The hrgh waves da ed over them They remrnded Jack of an angry lron smackrng hrs lrps an trcrpatrng a hearty meal A mountarnous wave caught Jacks srrrall boa and as rf rt were a wooden chrp on the crest of a wave tossed rt nearer and nearer to the Jagged rocks If the dory were to strrke them Jack worrld surely mer t the fate of hrs parents To Jack hours passed as hrs trred arms fought the waves At trmes he lost all hope but somethrng made hrm keep on It was not only for hrs own lrfe but for Marys also that he kept up the struggle Was the wrnd dyrng down Were the rr aves really smaller or was rt Just hrs rm agrna ron'J Had the rarn stopped9 Where were the rocks he had been fightrng so hard to keep from berng smashed agarnst'J Had hrs struggle been rn varn Was thrs heaven These are only a few of the ques trons Jack asked hrmself as he suddenly found hrmself rn calm water For the first trme rn hrs lrfe Jack lost all sense of dr rectron He was rn complete darkness He fl 'A J fl T xr r SX, Y , 4 V jx -K U sl' ' ' g eg -EJ o , . 1 I ,, , . . . . . ,, H A A' u , 1 . - U , - I. rv , y ' .
