If 4444364 The short-lived chemise, the trapeze, the bell and harem skirts, and the ballon dress were the rage of the fashion world in 1958. 1959 did not prolong the life of many of these fashions, however. Instead, the empire waisted dress and even shorter skirts than those in '58 became the mode. Color co-ordinated costumes, over- blouses and the pointed toe shoe carried over from the previous year, though. Favorites of high school girls were leotards, and the classic skirt and sweater outfit for winter, with the skirt and sweater matching in color being very popular. Rock 'n roll continued to be the favorite music of teenagers in 1958 and 1959. The favorite sing- er of this type of music, undaunt- ed by his Army career, was Elvis Presley. Pat Boone was another popular singer, preferred by those who liked the quieter, pretty songs. Some of the other singers of pop- ular music were Connie Francis, jimmy Rodgers, the Everly Broth ers, and the Coasters. Westerns had a monoply on T.V. with Maverick and Gun- smoke being two outstanding Some of the outstanding movies of this school year were Gigi , I Want to Live , Inn of the Sixth Happiness , The Defiant Ones .
