I -M Throughout the hours spent in school we have had the time to learn much through contact with the experienced minds of our administra- tion and faculty. A11 of our lives we will have the chance to profit by the appreciated advice and knowledge that they have imparted to us. Time marches on. And helping us in the times ahead are the guidance and wisdom that our administration and teachers have given to us. 4 vlminidfrafion 5 if Q os Mr. Willard shows Carol and Suzanne the plans of the new high school. acuffld X 3 g' nf . They know that graduation is a deep imprint in the sands of time, and that their future depends entirely on putting their determination and initiative to work. The same holds true for all of us. Whether we use the precious minutes ahead to make ourselves successes or failures depends entirely on us. Time will tell -. 2l'll0I'6 7242 74 Um ' AROLYN OLSEN, VALE DICTORIAN 70cvz!dEuemfe During the past school year many stories of national and international importance made the front page. Some of these headliners were the following: The death of Pope Pius XII and the inau guration of Pope john XXIII, the Berlin crisis, the Communist bombing of Quemoy, and the election of Charles de Gaul as President of France. In the United States segregation problems in the South and corruption in the Teamsters labor union especially troubled the Nation. Two great tragedies were the terrible fire that broke out in a Chicago parochial school, taking over 100 lives, and the discovery that john Foster Dulles, Sec- retary of State, has cancer. 1958 was also an election year. The Democratic Party secured the majority of the seats in Congress and the major- ity of the State government offices. Karen Mattson and Phil Weller are absorbed in the daily newspaper. 7Zw The new grandstand was completed in time for the three home football games re- maining towards the end of the season. The grandstand itself, one of the largest struc- tures owned by a high school in this State, cost approximately S107,000. It is built of reinforced concrete and is the suspension type. This means there are no posts to ob- scure the spectators' vision. MSX- 5? eryl Green and Lauren DeFreece are pic- ring one of the favorite types of entertain- -nt enjoyed this past year. favorites. If 4444364 The short-lived chemise, the trapeze, the bell and harem skirts, and the ballon dress were the rage of the fashion world in 1958. 1959 did not prolong the life of many of these fashions, however. Instead, the empire waisted dress and even shorter skirts than those in '58 became the mode. Color co-ordinated costumes, over- blouses and the pointed toe shoe carried over from the previous year, though. Favorites of high school girls were leotards, and the classic skirt and sweater outfit for winter, with the skirt and sweater matching in color being very popular. Rock 'n roll continued to be the favorite music of teenagers in 1958 and 1959. The favorite sing- er of this type of music, undaunt- ed by his Army career, was Elvis Presley. Pat Boone was another popular singer, preferred by those who liked the quieter, pretty songs. Some of the other singers of pop- ular music were Connie Francis, jimmy Rodgers, the Everly Broth ers, and the Coasters. Westerns had a monoply on T.V. with Maverick and Gun- smoke being two outstanding Some of the outstanding movies of this school year were Gigi , I Want to Live , Inn of the Sixth Happiness , The Defiant Ones . Auntie Mame , and The Big Country . LOUISA COR BIN, SAL UTATORIA Sandy Lilyblad and Pam Hayden model the fashions of '58 and '59 'fjgi J Eff. in Y KS if f , MQW 35 I xx ,E Q ,,. The Senior Dinner, winning the Thanksgiving skit for the third year, winning the Thanksgiving game, and Senior Week are a few of them. Perhaps the most wonderful memory is that of the Senior Ball. This beautiful dance was truly The Loveliest Night of the Year for all those who attended. Helping to make our functions such a success was the Senior Council. Under the supervision of our class advisors this group worked very hard as the central body of our class. JIOR COUNCIL. ROW ONE: D. Wing, J. dell, S. Lilyblad, L. Shepard, J. Ota, S. ntes. BACK: S. Living each moment as it comes, deriving all that we can, out of every minute, will make these experiences even more wonderful. If each one of us can learn to do this we will also find our lives will be filled with much more satisfaction and will be far richer. 2l'Cf6l65IflfleI'l 2. ANN AS , ADVISOR PRES SANDY RICHMOND, SHARON MCCOY, VICE PRES MR. BRYSON, AD VISO ARILYN CHERVFZNKA, secv. MARY ALICE BURLEIGH See our pep, hear our cheer, 1960 is our year. This, our class motto, was certainly proven to be true, because the juniors have been seen and heard. They were active in all extra-curricular activities - speech, athletics, and various clubs. The Junior Prom Mardi Gras was very successful and met with the approval of everyone. The junior Class set a precedent by electing four girl officers: President, Sandy Richmond, Vice- President, Sharon McCoy, Treasurer, Mary Alyce Burleigh, and Secretary, Marilyn Cervenka. All the undertakings of the class were truly something of which it may be proud. ti. M,Myn 'U wr A it 14 43 x BY M I Q I -Hier-. ., ik! RQ X39 x' I ..,. : .-: -' 1 str. J. Wright K. Wollery J. With this as their motto the freshmen thronged into our hallowed halls. One of the first undertakings of the class was to elect officers. Mike Ota served as President, Vice- President was Vincent Rene, and Barbara Jensen was elected Secretary-Treasurer. The class immediately became active in all extra-curricular activities. Their football and basketball seasons were particularly successful. The class dinner was enjoyed by all. This class has truly been a fine addition to our school through its many fine achievements, and will continue to be one throughout the remainder of its school years. .WW I Aw S I I Us 1 ff I Cf U, .Q :3 53? . Mike Brock scored both touchdowns on long gainers, and Doug Burleigh kicked the winning point. SUMNER 7 - ENUMCLAW 25 The Spartans went down to defeat against Enumclaw. They outplayed the- Hornets the first half, but in the second half they lost their drive, giving Enumclaw the upper hand. SUMNER 6 - CLOVER PARK 34 Although the Spartans gave their op- ponents a battle the first half, which ended 6 - 7, Clover Park came to life the second half to win the game by a large margin. SUMNER 7 - FRANKLIN PIERCE 19 Franklin Pierce outplayed Sumner throughout the first three quarters. Sumner came alive in the fourth quarter, but too late to whack down the margin by more than seven points. SUMNER 0 - HIGHLINE 31 The Spartans lacked hustle in this game. Although they got three drives, they fumbled inside the twenty yard line each time. SUMNER 0 - RENTON 42 The Spartans showed a lot of spirit in this game, but failed to do anything against one of the better teams in the State. The outcome of the game was not surprising, considering the size and skill of the Renton Indians. SUMNER 20 - AUBURN O The Spartans got off to a good start by scoring all points in the first half. They held Auburn throughout the game, showing a strong defense and offense. , fi' -S :sa ' Q- 5, A W Q Y' I 5,23 m f x s X' ' a 1 ,WL if ,xy ' V ,sq A q'y'mi 1' f 6 .
