.. !hu. BOARD OF EDUCATION Ed Hanson, Dean Taylor, Orville Brown, Neal Tebb. R, J. Hill LLIl96l'ilZf6lZJEI'Zf,5 essaqe A Bon voyage, students! You are ready to embark upon another voyage into a new year of high school, or off to college. or other experiences of work and play. This trip may seem -similar to ones you have taken be' fore, but really it is quite different. You will meet new people - friend and foe - see new sights and have amazingly new experiences on this Journey. But as the captain of the great ocean liner has access to the chart room, so do you. Many before you have marked out the rocks, sand bars, cross currents and shoals that lieTn the way. It is necessary always to learn the hard way. A little attention to your charts and you can do as the sea captain does - avoid the dangers so carefully plotted - and keep to the deep safe channels. But, you say, this is no freight run, or even a regular passenger cross- ing! You are out for excitement and high adventure. That may be, but even such a daring explorer of new ways as Admiral Byrd himself care- fully consulted every scrap of data that had been assembled before he began his voyage. Many adventures have ended in tragedy instead of the fine high excitement you seek. So plot your course with care, study the charts. and look well to your instruments. May your exploring be filled with interest and adventure, but may the end of this year's journey find you nearer the port you strive to attain, not broken in two on a reef or held fast on a sand bar. So bon voyage and Godspeed, students of Sumner High. CLAYTON E. WILLARD Superintendent Mr. Sfandis .Message fo flze Sfuderzfs In order that any ship may have a successful voyage. there are a number of things to consider. It cannot be left to chance. Neither should we let our life's course be left to chance. Our ship should. of course, be sturdy, should be provided with provisions, fuel, and personnel. and above all, with a proper course and leadership. Our lives, by the time we are ready to embark upon the sea of life, have been nurtured. developed. and educated by our parents. Our responsibility to our parents and the com- munity is a guide to us in setting our course. We know we must follow certain regulations and realize the importance of certain basic skills. and we have gained certain attitudes which contribute to our success or lack of it. These things have a definite bearing in determining our course. We, as teachers, trust and hope that we will contribute. to some of these things that will be of help to you.
