The pic- tures they drew on their tepees and the implements and tools they used to work and fight with tell us much about their lives. ln this modern era we too are recording our lives in ways simi- lar to the American Indian. We write books and draw pictures and thousands and thousands of years from now our descendants will be able to tell much about us by these records. The high school annual is one of the most treasured of every stu- dents possessions. Years go past and by thumbing through the pages they can recall many haDDY and joyous occasions spent during their high school days. No matter how old it gets each and every student owning a high school annual gets renewed pleas- ure lo o k i n g back through the pages of his book, Many years hence our decen- dants will also look through the pages of these books and they will be able to tell much about what the high school people of our gen- eration were like just as we can tell of past ages. The l945 Spartan has been planned to give a glimpse of Sum- ner High students in their various activities and it is the sincere hope of the members of the staff that in the future this book will also be one of the most treasured reminders of our days spent at our i SDA AN INDIAN EDITICN ,W aw 1945 y,,,fZf'J J ,Ml ag,fJf NjfjjrZ'i4W WLQQQMWM W ff X f . This being the fourth year we have gone to press under the stress of war, we are looking forward to victory and years of peace to follow. A true victory will not mean rust the de- feat of an enemy in battle, it will be the securing of a peace that will provide post- war world unity. This will be a most significant victory. lts importance for the future does not mean the destruction of human life and property: it means the changes wrought by sacrifice and the willingness of the United Nations to fight and die for these principles will eventually make men free. lt is a challenging thought that while our military forces are winning the imme- dirrto victory, our educational fcrces must be increasingly concerned to help win the ultimate victory. Vifhile the adults of today are winning the war, the adults of tomor- st learn to win the peace. row mu Since the task of rebuilding the world will be neither an easy one nor a short process, much of the problem will fall upon the young men and women of our genera- tion. As preparation for that responsibility, our years in High School can be immensely fruitful. We have not sufficiently realized that knowleige is only a means to an end, 'Wrtlrout a working vision of individual and nationzl responsibilities for the creation of tr truly crvrlifed world, we shall never bc able to attain our goal. Our national state of mind in the postwar ora will have a great deal of bearing upon the peace. How about a revival of the old adventurous American Spirit - the s p 1 r it which .rnimated innumerable pioneers and builders who created this government of the people, by the people, for the people, and who fought for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? live cannot thrive on 'he glory of our ance stors, but must live up to that glory-- go forward with self-con' frdence and pride in our own country, our own capacities and potentialiiies. We must sffp vautifgusly for we wanna' be strong physically if we collapse morally. We must not sacrriice grrrtrfiple for virktryry. ff ' us st t f' ff rt tip ,rlrl tr trru fxtrrrrft fl Dfrt1'vr'rcyflr:1t will be worthy of the interest of ffrltering g v- tfrnrn--nts. l.-1 urs take at-tion upon thc vrsz' ri l'rrtyt, rid victory. Action in this sense is logical thinking. lt is lfvvf- at virtue, lu the wards fy? Abralrarn Lincoln it is firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right. CALAVAN, Superintendent Message Three hundred years ago this country in which we now live was the abode ot a few hundred tlieusind indians, wha lived mostly oft the Coun- try. Such a mode of existence required a large fTYl x'llY'l of lwnd m feed and clothe even Ji lew people. The lnflian boy was taught many things, and these things he learned well, because in order to survive he rnust be a good hunter and a good warrior. However thorough his training, it was very meager compared to the education given our youth today. Twelve years of training only aive the student the tools of education and train him tor citizenship in a country supporting mil- lions, where thousands lived before. High school graduation is I1 good start, but in no way is it a substitute for a vocation. He must noxv proceed with the tools he has to learn some- thing well, in order tc survive in a world of keen competition, VVl1at1vver 1 lwoy or girl chooses as his or her vo-ation, it is cur prayer that he will pursue as issiduausly and learn as thoroughly as the Indian lucy whuse survival depended on his Cunning. Q SJ .5 SCHOOL BOARD Mr. Francis Chervenkn. Mr Harold Fostex, Mr. Richard Fryur. Message What may we learn from the Indians? The needs of our coast Indians were easily met as food was plentiful in the form of fish, clams, and wild life, as well as berries and potatoes. Winters being mild their housing and clothing problems were simple. Travel was by canoe and they spent much time sitting around their camp fires. These indians were not very active because they did not have to be. The plains lndians were not sa well situated. Harsh winters forced them to migrate or build shelters: food had to be raised or captured and stored for the winter. They were active because they had to be. The lndif1n's life pattern was very well estab- elders lished. The young were taught by their to do those things necessary to supply food, cloth- ing anfl shelter. Education was direct and mean- ingful. They learned by cbservation 'Ind irnita- 'ion, and they succeeded and were happy to 'he degree they worked and learned. Band This year the Sumner High School Band is indeed one of which We can be very proud. lts contribu- tions to various programs have been numerous and greatly enjoyed by all attending. It has played for many football and basketball pep assemblies and also has turned out for all of the home football and 12' GIRLS' SEXTETTE BOW 1-Aleatha Dieatrick, Accompanist: Mary Lou Shaver, Alyce Larsen. A. and graduation exercises and a very fine exhibition of music and marching given at the annual May Day Program. Each year two concerts are given: the Mid- Winter and the Spring Concerts. The winter con- cert had several overtures featuring The Choco- late Soldier, and a young tap dancer was the quest artist. However, this year the band ch ose to specialize mostly in popular and semiepopular music. Some members of the band have offered their special talents to various programs which were greatly enjoyed by all. Most outstanding of these were selections by the Trumpet Trio and the Baton Twirling Exhibitions by Gloria Ellexson on roller skates. These were put on during the half at the home basketball games. Gloria, a member oi the 1945 Senior Class, is the student band director and drum majorette. The band director is Mr. Paul Cronenberger. There are approximately sixty members in this organization, although graduation will take ten of them this year. The Sumner High School Student Body is very proud of its band and Wishes it a lot of success. Football This year the Sumner Spartans started out the football season under a new coach, Mr. Edward Frank McCoy. Coach McCoy was born in Butte, Montana, September 13, 1910. He went to school in Butte until after his Sophomore year. He then moved to the neighboring city of Tacoma and there in Lincoln High School he proceeded to make himself a name in athletics. Upon completing high school he entered the College of Puget Sound where he played football, but especially excelled in track, and won several awards. After finishing college he was offered a position at Wapato where he stayed until coming to Sumner. Coach McCoy not only made a name for himself in high school athletics but also in the field of music. He was known to be quite a Iunior Frank Sinatra and about this time was seriously considering the wb - prospects of becoming a concert artist on his violin. While in college, he informs us, that he was a l very studious young man, taking part in none of l the usual escapades of a college student, although i he somehow obtained the nick-name Choo-Choo. l Coach McCoy is now married and has a two-year-old 1 daughter, Sharon. l He enjoys almost any sport, especially skiing, ice skating. tennis and bowling. He likes to read, and listens to symphonies every chance he gets. This year, the first time in several years, Coach McCoy or- ganized a track team in addition to football and bas- ketball. Next year we'll be seeing him again and we know he's whipping our basketball, football and l track teams into championship material. l This year we had one of the largest football turn- ,Q outs in the last ten years. After two weeks practice V, Q -S' l the Spartans played Enumclaw on the Sumner field 1 and beat them 6 to 0. Sumner outplayed the Tigers tt'i ,A the whole game but could only put the ball over L ' 1 the line once. 7:4 'A - A- Je The next game was up at Kent where the carefree Spartans won 20 to 6. They still didn't act as if they Coach MCCOY were a ball club. km FOOTBALL ACTION PICTURE ootball 1 ' th Auburn Trojans at Sumner and the Purple and Then the Spartans exploded. No longer was there any doubt as to their ability as a Kirkland and was just about knocked off the unbeaten list. They f'nall put the game on ice in the last three minutes of the game. They just couldn't The score was 18 to U. The Spartans were g catch or hold on to the Puyallup backs. Proving they could lose and come back, the Spar- tans played Highline on a muddy field. The Pirates were definitely one of the best teams in the league. After taking a beating all day Sumner finally scored on a long pass play. They then fought desperately and kept the Pirates from scoring and came home with a 7 to O win. The next game proved to be the Spartans' best game of the year. The league leading Renton Indians carrying an unbeaten season moved into the Spar- tan lair. When they came out they were in a tie for first place with Sumner and Puyallup. Sumner pulled the same pass play that beat l-lighline and emerged with a 6 to 0 victory. ln the last game of the season, Sumner journeyed to Buckley and in a sea of mud Sumner outplayed and oughtfought to lose l2 to U to the Mountaineers. This loss put Sumner in third place for the season with Renton retaining their championship and Puyal- lup coming in second. .- YQ ' 3 4 l . 1' -Q ks, sq.: -. ,fs ' X rf 'N' , I -.six S 7-f Ah , J ' ' NH Khin YELL LEADERS STANDING-Charles Wadsworth. These purchases were made every Thursday, second period, and the dimes and quarters invested amounted to nearly 540,000 by the end of the year. The faculty cooperation helped greatly of course but the work was done principally by the students themselves. Those participating during the year were Geraldine Filkins, Chairmanp Iva Atkinson, Vero Blackadder, Irene Hyland Ioan Storhow, Stamp Cashiers, Muriel Rutledge Io Collier, Bond Clerks, and the various students from second period classes who acted as stamp salesmen. Generous donations were made by the students to the American Iunior Red Cross. Many other War Effort activities were undertaken that proved to be most successful. The girls' club supervised the collection of clothes and shoes for the Russian War Relief drive. Each student was asked tr contribute five pounds of clothing and a pair of shoes. The high school girls' club also undertook several proiects with each girl working on one of her preference. Thece groups made poke books, cross-word puzzle hooks, Christmas decorations, novelty gifts and many other useful and entertaining articles lor the patients at Madigan General Hospital, Fort Lewis VVashington.
