We, the SENIOR CLASS, having bequeathed all our possessions in this will, do hereby leave, hoping success will be our reward. Frank Empson and Carey Lanier Testators CLASS PROPHECY May, 1962 Dear Diary, . This has been quite a day! On my rounds as a traveling saleswoman, I returned to Portland. There have been many changes, but it'll always be the same old town. Before starting work, I decided to visit S. C. H..S. The first two people I saw when I stepped into Miss Marie's room were John Woodard and Delano Graves, still sitting in their same old places by the radiator. Miss Marie had given them up as hopeless and gone on a vacation, while Wanda Kirkham was substituting for her. She didn't seem to be making much progress though, John still thinks cat is spelled k-a-t. I was very much surprised to find that Harold Dean Harper is now the mathe- matics teacher. After a brief visit to every classroom, I went to town where I met Noel Lane and Bert Anglea, still captains-but in the navy. They're expecting a promotion and will probably get it too. As I left them, a large poster attracted my eye. The big Joe David Dye Circus was coming to town. Wayne Bennett was the ring master, and it featured-can you believe this-Rebecca Hurt, the greatest lion trainer on earth. Her lions make Mable Stark's look like alley cats. Still dazed I walked up the door of a beautiful house. The butler, Bobby Tor- rents, opened the door and showed me into the library where I sat down to wait. Idly I picked up the paper, edited by Joe Jones with Frank Empson as art editor. Who should be on the front page staring back at me but Gloria Link, who was back home to stay after living in France for the last few years! She was dressed in the latest Paris creation. Ooh la la! The next page showed a picture of Joan Hart, new Paramount star, who is currently appearing in the movie, Put Your Shoes On Lucy, produced and directed by William Roark. She had been photographed by Lanny Moore, who seems to relish his profession of photographing pretty girls. The music on the radio suddenly-drew my attention. It was the most beautiful string music I have ever heard. You're right, it couldn't be played by any other than those famous Grand Ole Opera stars, Harold Young with his mandolin and Charlie Claiborne with the guitar. Suddenly the program was interrupted by the great news commentator, Clyde Riggs, who predicted that Bettye Dye would win the election and be the first woman senator from Tennessee and that Joe Dobbs' Vandy team would win over Tennessee 100-0. Clyde Riggs' predictions are 99V2 percent correct. I switched off the radio as the lady of the house, the former Shirley Lovell, appeared. While talking of our old school mates, she told me that she had iust received a telephone call from Alberta Street, who is hostess for Portland Airlines. It seems that Lloyd Hester, who got his training by driving his Chrysler, had lost control of the plane going through a drove of flying saucers and had to make an emergency landing near Buck Lodge. The able Dr. Carleen Knowles and her nurse, Maurice Utley, were on hand to see that everyone was taken care of. No one seemed to be hurt though, except Mayor Robert Pearson who was unconscious for a few minutes. While he was out he kept saying, I knows da is ghostes cause I iest see'd one. I suppose he was lust dreaming of his role in a Chapel program back at s. c. H. s. g When Shirley told me that a big super market had iust been opened by Floyd Briley and his wife Joan, well known as the town gossip, I rushed down to see what I could find out. Joan couldn't wait to report that if it didn't all blow over, James Dickens and Less Wiseman were going to build a bubble gum factory on the square in Portland. Opposition to the enterprise comes from Dan West, Chair- man of the school board, who believes that all the children will want to quit school and work there, and from two big strawberry farmers, David Harper and Lonnie Briley, who fear that Portland will cease being the strawberry capital and get to be known as, PortIand, heart of the bubble gum belt. Mayor Pearson has been quoted as saying, It's a grand idea. .- vy-1-:qvw-f.,W7'T7-In.-W - --1-TY-.w 7 , Joan also told me that pianist Lois West and singer Anne Brown were going to appear at Carnegie Hall as soon as Hugh Allen Craigge, construction engineer, and his men completed repairs. Lois and Anne had teamed up to perform at Patty Brown's grand wedding when talent scout, Sue Vanatta, heard them and helped them on their way. I would have enioyed staying longer with Joan but her triplets were playing Tarzan, swinging from the light fixtures and landing around my neck. It began to get on my nerves. Also I couldn't hear very well for one of them kept trying to stuff my ears with cotton. As I was leaving, I noticed an advertisement of tooth paste. The smiling girl in the picture was Sue Martin, an excellent choice to be sure. While walking on down the street, whom should I meet but Pearl Heady, now home on a vacation after winning fame at the Indianapolis Speedway as the only girl who can drive through a stone wall without butting her brains out. She told me that Frances Keith's husband decided to run for governor of Tennessee and that they and their two lovely little girls had moved to Nashville. We stopped in for a bite to eat at Lanier's Pharmacy, owned and operated by Carey Lanier. Goldie Woodall waited on us. She showed us a new book entitled, JUMP IN THE LAKE written by Kenneth Harper. It is the sequel to his well-known story, WHAT I'D DO IF I WERE STALIN. I noticed that it was printed by the James Porter Publishing Company. As Pearl was driving me home, she reminded me that this was the tenth anni- versary of our graduation from S. C. H. S. As we were recalling the fun we had at football and basketball games, class tournaments and all the other times, we realized that good times are never gone if they're not forgotten. Thelma Wakefield A BOOK OF MEMORIES The book of time has ope'd its page To the yearning youth so free, Come write your page as others have done And build your history. There are pages filled with study That some wrote with array, But others lingered along Deciding they had rather play. One chapter holds, the battle That for years had been defeat, 'Til our noble knights charged on To fling the foe beneath their feet. Some are filled with happiness, While others tell the sad, And somehow, someway, it seems The good o'ercame the bad. As time wears on-the pages turn. The ink is getting low. We suddenly awake from a wonderful dream And find it's time to go. The waning chapter soon will close. The book of youth departs, But the book of memories forever remains Entwined within our hearts.. -Bettye Dye is gg f 3 I -nv ,ww 'Z A vw ., :Ez ' .'
