The 1961 Oak Leaves Published by the Journalism Class of Summitville High School Summitville, Indiana MARIAN HULL 1947-1960 What is lovely never dies but passes on into more loveliness. 2 Foreword This is the entrance-----a doorway to the future. Through these doors pass the proudest students in the world. Behind these doors lie our dreams and our hopes, our defeats and disappointments. This year, the year of the opening of our new school will be remembered throughout our lives. We the students of Summitville High School endeavor to preserve this memory in our yearbook. This is the story of our most important moments at the new Summitville High School. The many high points of this outstanding year have appropriately named this book. As these pages unfold, the students will again move through the memories of the 1960-61 scholastic year and will dramatize . . . The Summit of a New Year Summertime brings the finishing touches. PATROL BOYS: Paul Thurston, Jim Dunlap, Mike Bohlander, Eugene Auler and Richard Byrd. 10 The school cafetorium was transferred into a dreamland of red hearts and white crepe paper on February 4 for the first winter formal at S.H.S. As the couples enjoyed dancing to the music of the Ice Caps, a gay and friendly atmosphere enhanced the evening. Sweetheart Ball was the theme of the dance sponsored by the Psi Iota Xi Sorority for the pleasure of the student body. Absher Message to the Class of “61” As you enter this challenging decade of the 60's, ' take time to see how well equipped you are. You have the knowledge of all the great educators and philosophers of the ages past. The modern tools and conveniences that you have are countless. The scientific knowledge at your disposal is unsurmountable. You have the foresight and vision of youth. vVithout reservation, it can be said that you are well equipped to enter this time of many great challenges. Soon you will be a part of that group that must make the important decisions as to whether we will survive as a civilization. They must be wise ones. More important than all of these is the individual. You must be morally, mentally, and physically strong and have the greatest concern for all mankind. If you are not of this character, it matters not how well equipped you are. I have the utmost confidence in youth, and I am sure that all of you will do your part in building a sound future. 14 Harold Forrest has helped to make the dream of a new school a reality through all of his hard work. He has held the position of trustee for 6 years. Quite a few of his summer afternoons were spent here at the school to see that it would be ready on time. His capable supervision has aided S.H.S. in its climb to the top. The Board's voice is the people's choice. Robert Dean Don Gossett Gene DuPouy Agnes Moyer is a very necessary part of our school. She is our school secretary, and she does a wonderful job in keeping the books and records of our school in order. 15 Present Educators PATRICIA RICHARDSON Ball State College English Physical Education Junior Sponsor RITCHIE WILSON Ball State College English Spanish Freshman Sponsor PATRICIA KESSLER Marion College Art Music English Senior Sponsor JAMES STONE Purdue University Coach Physical Education Driver's Training ALBERT SANDERS Indiana State Teachers College Math Science Sophomore Sponsor LA VELD A GOODMAN Purdue University Home Economics Psychology Seventh Grade Sponsor JAMES KURTZ Purdue University Social Studies 16 of Future Leaders CARMEL MANN Ball State College Sixth Grade MARY DICKERSON North Texas State College Fifth Grade CHARLES FAD LEY Brigham Young University Choir, Band Elementary Music ARTHUR GOSSETT Ball State College Social Studies Math 8th Grade Sponsor WILMA GOSSETT Ball State College Third Grade RUBY GOSSETT Ball State College First Grade LUISE McCORMICK Baylor College First Grade MAXINE THURSTON Ball State College Third Grade MARY JANE BREWER Ball State College Second Grade 17 Auxiliary Staff Mr. Ward is to S.H.S. as education is to success. The contest was sponsored by the journalism class. One of the traditional and most thrilling social events of the year and of high school experience is the Junior-Senior Prom. Dates are made weeks and months in advance and a great deal of secrecy pervades the atmosphere as the Juniors plan the biggest dance of the year as a parting tribute to the seniors. The long antici- pated evening became a reality on April 29th. The girls, lovely in their pas- tel gowns and corsages, and the fellows, in their formal attire, completed the elegant scene. It was a grand evening and will long be remembered by all promenaders. Sponsored by FAIRMOUNT FEED AND GRAIN Music Departments CORONETS- TOP ROW: Dwight Gardner, Linda Jones and Jon Van Ness.
