qL€JVBS «. £ FOREWORD We, as Seniors, are proud to present this 1957 Oak Leaves. Along with it, we wish to acknowledge the en- couragement given us by our parents, teachers, and com- munity, and to express our sincere thanks for their guid- ance and counsel throughout the years. As we leave our school, we are aware of the priceless influence it has had over our lives. Laughter and work woven together, our school days have become a part of us. We leave this annual—and with us we take mem- ories and ideals that will last a lifetime. SUE WINGER—Editor We, the Seniors of 1957, do proudly dedicate this annual to our sponsor, Miss Rose Slain. With patience and wisdom Miss Slain has led us through our high school years. We sincerely ap- preciate the time and effort she has spent with us as a class and the interest she has shown to us as individuals. Thank you, Miss Slain. To you we dedicate this 1957 Oak Leaves. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS You, the high school graduates, are going to carry on what we adults have started, you will sit where we are sitting, and when we are gone you will attend to those things which we think are important. We may adopt all the policies we please, but how they will be carried out depends upon you. You will assume control of our communities, states, and nation. You will take over our churches, schools, farms, and businesses. All our cultural efforts will be judged, praised, or condemned by you. Our great American heritage and the very fate of humanity rests in your hands. I urge each of you to accept the challenge of life with all of its implied responsibilities. Continue to learn and to practice as willing workers that you may earn satisfactions from your job and from the knowledge that you have contributed to the preservation of in- dividual rights and the four freedoms. I am sure that I speak for all of the faculty when I say, our greatest satisfactions in life have been derived from being able to help you reach this graduation milestone. Working with you has been a pleasure, citizens of tomorrow. PAUL H. HANNA, Principal TRUSTEE Mr. Forrest is completing his third year as trustee of Van Buren Town- ship. Many improvements have been made during his term of office. We are grateful for the interest and con- sideration he has given our school. A MESSAGE TO YOUNG PEOPLE and Parents FROM A GREAT AMERICAN “ . . . . today’s exciting era of rapid discovery and almost unbelievable technological prog- ress offers young people with inquisitive minds—and a good education—scores of richly rewarding opportunities that were not even dreamt of in my youth. “One Thomas Edison in a generation is no longer enough to sustain our kind of progress —today we literally need thousands of well- trained young people with the kind of vision, imagination and courage that took Edison on his lifelong conquest of the unknown. “This is why I am constantly urging boys and girls to go on to as full an education as possible—not only in science and engineer- ing, but in the arts, the social sciences, the humanities or any other field that fits their talents. ...” —By Charles F.
