The Ookleaves staff of Sum- mitville in this year of nine- teen fifty - four do proudly dedicate this yearbook to our sponsor, Mr. Arthur Gossett. During the year, he has made many friends and many improvements in the school. These are appreciated by all of us. Mr. Pope is married and is the father of two children, Jimmy, age 5 1 2, and Leann, age 20 months. ] 0 71 Gates Long Mr. Long is completing his seventh year as trustee of Van Buren Township. S. 8 General Office Work Senior Class History On September 14, 1942, thirty-one small children entered Miss Dolly's room to be cared for and started on their way up. -Among those students were Lulabelle Briley, Joyce Bright, Roy Danforth, Larry Forrest, Radford Garrett, O. M. Goodman, Joyce Hollingsworth, Barbara Leachmon, James Merritt, Jbnice Treadway, Donald Vetor, and Garry Webster. In the fall of 1943, we were feeling more at ease when Miss Wolfe took us under her watchful eye for our second year of school. Miss Achsah Smith kept vigilence over us while we drilled on our multiplication tables and improved our grammar. That year Marilyn Greenlee and Ewell Miite |oined us. During our fourth year at Oak Grove, we were taught by Mrs. Anna Tanselle. Bill Yeagy joined our increasing class. We progressed onward now to the fifth grade, where we were taught by Miss Florence Toppan. Patty Cunningham and Mary McCune joined us as we tried for the sixth grade. Carmel Minn taught us this year and helped us to consume more knowledge. We had been losing and gaining a few students each year, so as we went into our seventh year of school, Joyce Saubert joined us as we were taught by several teachers. George Johnson was our sponsor. Now feeling very proud of ourselves, we were looking forward to our graduation from grade school. Again we had several teachers. Miss Joanne Nixon was our sponsor. We gained Mary Hall and Richard Schuyler, and, again, Lulabelle Briley-who couldn't stay away very long. All summer we anticipated coming once again to school, only now as Green Freshmen . Wfe had completed eight full years and had only four to go. Mrs. Michael was chosen to be our sponsor and we gained seven pupils coming from Boone Twp. They were Joyce Bogue, John Hueston, Donald Fbttison, Gladys Ffettigrew, Glenda Pettigrew, Carolyn Reid, and John Thurston. We went into our sophomore year with Mr. Jesse Pitts as our sponsor. Our junior year things began to happen socially as well as scholastically. We gave our first stage production, We Shook the Family Tree , knowing that we would never be a Gable or a Hepburn. All the same, we had fun. Selling magazines was our second big project. We did very well. A few of us won certificates and trophies. This year we gained Earl Newton. Our senior year was even more exciting than we expected. We gave another play, If Mother Only Knew , sold Christmas cards, and sold concessions at the ball games. We looked forward with eagerness to our Senior trip and our Prom, given to us by the Juniors. We are proud of our boys who participated in sports. We are also proud of our teachers who have helped us through our twelve years of school. Our sponsor, M. Gossett, has made our last two years much easier with his excellent guidance. We are at the climax of our senior year and feel proud getting reody to receive our diplomas and go out into the world as grown men and women. The Senior Class of 1954 wishes to express their greatest appreciation to the faculty members and the citizens of this community for helping and sacrificing some of their life so that we were able to achieve our education. 11 Senior Class of 1954 k Roy Marion Danforth, Jr. President Boys' Club— Basketbal I — Baseball----- Track-------- Annual Staff- -1 -2-3-4 -2-3-4 -1 -2-3-4 ----1-2 -------4 o f f I '■I'' Joyce Ann Bogue Secretary Chorus----------------2-3-4 Sextette-----------1-2-3-4 Gobi inertes-------I-2-3-4 Annual Staff--------------4 Gazette Staff--------------4 Class Play--------------3-4 Redford Roy Garrett Vice Resident Basketbal 1 2-3-4 Baseball — 1-2-3-4 Track 2-3 Chorus 1-2-3 Boys' Club —1 -2-3-4 Quartette 3 Annual Staff 4 Class Play 3 Larry Lee Forrest Treasurer Boys' Club--------1 -2-3-4 Quartette----------------3 Chorus-----------------3-4 F.F.A.------------------1 4-H---------------1-2-3-4 Basketbal I--------------3 Track-------------------1 Annual Staff-----------3-4 Gazette Staff------------4 Class Ploy-------------3-4 Glodys Ann Pettigrew Janice Kay Treadway Gladys Cookie Goblinettes 1-2-4 Gobi inettes -1-2-4 Chorus 3-4 Chorus—-— 3-4 Hobby Club -3 Hobby Club 3-4 Yell Leader 1 -3 Annual Staff 4 Annual Staff 3-4 Gazette Staff 4 Gazette Staff 4 Class Play 3-4 4 Ewell B. On this program we interview some of the out- standing personalities from this community. Today's outstanding feature is an interview with a former class of Summitville High School, who graduated in 1954. First, we have Mrs. Murry Thurston, formerly Joyce Bogue of Summitville, who is now the hairstylist for M-G-M studios. Mary Hall is the star of the Ice Capades of 1964 and Marilyn Greenlee is the Home Economics teacher at Summitville. Joyce Hollingsworth and Lulabelle Briley have fulfilled their life ambitions—to make money; they are now the owners of several Texas oil wells. O. M. Goodman is now Marilyn Monroe's fifth husband. Larry Forrest was a teacher in Ogden, Utah, until he was jailed for bigamy. Radford Garrett, whose ambition was to live and let live, has changed his mind, as he now owns the Garrett Funeral Home in Garrett, Indiana. Joyce Bright is now head nurse at Billings Veterans Hospital and Mory Helen McCune, who always wanted to be a nurse, is now the nursemaid to her twelve children. Roy Donforth is head basketball coach at Purdue University. John Heston is the owner of the Hueston Auto Agency in Kokomo. Mrs. Jack Smedley, formerly Patty Cunninghom, now teaches the fourth grade at Elwood, of which her triplets are members. Janice Treadway is still working to keep Leon's arm strong. Garry Webster, who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1963, is now going to make his second try at it. Don Vetor is Glenda Pettigrew's private pilot and is kept very busy flying her between Summitville and Gamp Lejeune, North Carolina. Barbara Leachmon is private secretary to Joyce Soubert, who married John D. Rockefeller IV. Ewell B. Wiite is married to Joyce Waymire and is now a very prominent farmer in Wisconsin. Jim Merritt is a Certified Public Accountant in Washington, D.C., where he serves all of the congress- men. Carolyn Reid, who is still looking for the man she loves, recently made another unsuccessful visit to the Lonely Hearts Club. John Thurston is now head electrical engineer for Westinghouse. Richard Schuyler is the owner of the Lazy S Dude Ranch near Cheyenne, Wyoming. Billy Yeagy, who married Junevee Coleman, is owner of several wel l-known service stations throughout the country. Don Pattison, who married Judy Cunningham, is now known as Sheriff Pattison, Sheriff of Modison County. One of his deputies is another well-known Summitville graduate, Earl Newton. He married Wanda Bennett and is also the father of four darling children. Last, but by no means least, is Gladys Pettigrew, now Mrs. Wayne Small, star of the Gladys and Buzzy Show, seen on this station every Sunday evening. This show also stars their seven boys. 17 Morris Sherman Jack Howard Bailey Baker Banther Corn J u M C A Barbara Joyce Durr Gossett Harry Jana Sue Jack Dewey Saaoenfield Schwinn Jo Ann Janice Thurston Tappen Sandra Barbara Tucker Warren jydy Shirley Ronny Floyd Janet Patricia Charles Ann Cunningham Dean DeLong Durr Elsworth Hannon Head Himelick Margaret Sue Linda Wayne Phil Jack Hoi I (ngs worth Irwin Johnson Jackson Veter Smith Jbdy Larry Jerry Wayne Richard Mary Robert Tom Mason Witney AV Connell hkirris Pyle Richards Roudebush Silvey Delores Catherine James Max Sorah Max Sam Kay Saunders Semon Small Smith Vernon Warren Willis Young Joyce Patty Jimmy Warren Baldwin Barnhart Beckley Beeson fy v - M f h a jA Av: Jack Bright Marvin Chambers Larry Curry Clyde Denny h 1 i V r i Nelson Cecelia John Jayne Dickerson Dunham Gates Gossett Floyd Junior Hann Hendricks Morgan Nancy Pattison Jimmy Matney Norma Peyton Janice Ralston A Evelyn Stevens Joyce Joe Thurston Thurston Phil Larry Vetor Waller Alice Miite Jeanette Wilson Dorothy Willis Sue Winger Robert Barbara Imel Kennedy 3 3 Margaret Danny Tomlinson Vernon Joyce Bradley Woolley Veagy Larry Melvin Ralph Patricio Joyce Carol Bair Blackburn Chastain Clock Com Otg Long Charles Virgil Hall Hartley Brenda Ann Connie Johnson Melling Owens Bill Beverly Lee Millar Pollard Ryker Troy Jbrrie Bruce Shaffer Si Ivey Stanley James Dunham Nancy Betty Leroy Jerry Rehto Ronny Shirley Stanley Treadway Wable Waller Webster Welborn Wilson Karen Dunham Jack Wright V £ N 'f Paul Jerry Margaret Mike Grace McConnell McCord Morqon Nottinahom Roberson Elaine Stevens Hazel Smith Carolyn Lorry Treadway Wable Sonia Karen Bruce Will is Woodruff Yeagy Danny Hawkins Eldon Linda -fanet Olive Michael Louise Tony Sandra Nova Bill Mary Lou Meredith Kirkpatrick Little McCune Maley Motney Moyer Stephen Wanda ieon Gerald Susan Newman Reding Reneou Richards Rudy .fame Et tie Blaine Welborn Mtlte Yeogy Roger Linda Bonnie Janet Wilma Phillip Douglas Sharor Beeson Blackburn Bright Bright Bright Chastain Coleman Gaid Nancy Harrold s'K 3 James Inglis Patricia Omer leon Jby Hartley Hollingsworth Horner Judith Beverly Kennedy Maple - ' William Nancy Kay Maynard Me I ling r3! They are—standing, left to right—Mrs. Margaret Leachman, Mrs. Doris Frazier, and Mrs. Estella Clarke. 42 The school has been kept in excellent conditior our faithful janitor, M’. Ward. Although he wa unable to be with us all this year because of hit health, we still feel indebted to him for his wc‘ COACH £ £ Cooch Jbe Harvey, in his second year at S. H.S. and his first as head cooch, has done a fine job in potting his charges through their paces. This has been a tough year for the coach, but Coach Harvey had made no ex- cuses and continued his good work. Before coming to Summitville, Coach Harvey coached at Bippus and Beaver Dam. John Green has completed his first yeor at S. H. S. During that year he had guided the Junior High squad to a successful season. Mr. Green was hea K)f the athletic de- partment at Wallace, Indiana, for 3 years be- fore coming to S.H.S. The Summitville Goblin baseball team won one game of their five game schedule. The baseball team was composed of 5 seniors, 1 junior, 8 sophomores, and 5 freshmen. Radford Garrett, Roy Danforth, Earl Newton, Don Pattison, and Jim Merritt will be absent from the 1954-55 squad when baseball practice starts. This year's cheerleaders were Judie Mason, Judy Cunningham, and Linda Abernathy. These girls have done a fine job of keeping up the school spirit and leading the yells. Y t L 1 It A DU S We are very proud of the Junior High cheer- leaders who are Grace Roberson, Brenda Johnson, Judie Silvey, Betty Treadway, and Jbn Goodman. They have attended the games and really willingly backed their team. Al- though this was their first year of cheer- leading, they did a splendid job. The comfort of the players depends largely on them. They have done an excel- lent job this year and deserve a lot of credit. 48 Top row, left to right: Merritt, mgr..
