MARGARET EL1AsoN WINTER She's small, but so is a stick of dynamite. Miss Susie Summit is an intelligent girl. She takes a natural interest in her school work and usually studies fairly hard. She's certainly not what you'd call a brain,', but sometimes her intellectual curiosity gets the better of her, and she can't help becoming interested in the foreign policy of the US or the development of Iago's character in Othello or the problems of the UN. Because of her interest she has a high average in her marks. If you're ever around Susie for any period of time, there's one factor you'l1 not miss about her. She loves to sing. Her repertoire is large and includes anything from the blues to bebop to campfire songs, and she usually won't stop singing, once she's started, until she has exhausted her supply of songs and her voice. If she isn't singing, she's talking about one of her famous Madeline Island houseparties. Every so often the school breathes a sigh of relief and the town of Bayfield, Wisconsin, a sigh of despair, as Susie piles into a couple of cars with boxes of food and sleeping bags and suitcases, and rattles up to Madeline for a week-end. She has a lot of fun and then comes home and talks about it until another one comes along. Before you draw any rash conclusions about Susie, you'd better read a little more. i221
