Miss Susie Summit is an intelligent girl. She takes a natural interest in her school work and usually studies fairly hard. She's certainly not what you'd call a brain,', but sometimes her intellectual curiosity gets the better of her, and she can't help becoming interested in the foreign policy of the US or the development of Iago's character in Othello or the problems of the UN. Because of her interest she has a high average in her marks. If you're ever around Susie for any period of time, there's one factor you'l1 not miss about her. She loves to sing. Her repertoire is large and includes anything from the blues to bebop to campfire songs, and she usually won't stop singing, once she's started, until she has exhausted her supply of songs and her voice. If she isn't singing, she's talking about one of her famous Madeline Island houseparties. Every so often the school breathes a sigh of relief and the town of Bayfield, Wisconsin, a sigh of despair, as Susie piles into a couple of cars with boxes of food and sleeping bags and suitcases, and rattles up to Madeline for a week-end. She has a lot of fun and then comes home and talks about it until another one comes along. Before you draw any rash conclusions about Susie, you'd better read a little more. i221 ' ' ,-Q 1- 1 ' 1' Q N4 V A I A WWQ f Ag M as Q , ., , . f I ' ':':Lf. If a 3 ? Q A ,. YfVhen she gets a good idea, she's quick to carry it out. She has had her bad moments, but she never fails to come through with a grin on her face, a sparkle in her eye, and a smile in her heart. XVho else could have given a spur of the moment dance and had it turn out to be one of the best of the year? XVho else could have made the Junior Room look so comfortable? NVho else has a flock of boys jamming all traffic at the corner of Goodrich and Dunlap every afternoon at four o'clock? Maybe her interests aren't always academic, but she never fails to give you a friendly smile when you meet her in the hall. She has the ability of easy friendliness and the spirit needed to accomplish great things, if she once gets interested in them. Hlithout our happy Susie, life wouldn't be so much fun at Summit. i291 Fmnt row left to Hght CACO MYERS, KAY STODDARD, BETSY RAMSEY, CYNTHIA BRACKETT, LAURA FLoAN, NIARLENE HLGER, GAIL VICTOR, SUSAN READ, SALLY KATZ Second mw MARY DOSDAIL KIRKIE Folms, JUDY BLAKE, NICKY BENZ, RUTH SToMs, GERTRUDR PEET, ANN LUYTEN SOPHQMQRES If you're interested in sports, Susie is, too. She has ability in nearly every sport, and at whatever she's playing, she Works hard. In spite of her hard work she doesn't always win, so she's learning what it is to be a good sport in losing as well as winning. However, life isn't all athletics for Susie. When she's given a responsibility, she usually lives up to it. She has taken up the project of supporting a French girl and is working as hard at it as she does at basketball. Her money-making ideas have been original and fun. She worked for a long time, knitting potholders, painting boxes and trays, and baking food for a sale. The contest to find a mascot for Summit was fun for everyone and profitable for the school. She likes to be original, and you can usually hear her from the other end of the hall, singing at the top of her voice. Susie is learning that she is part of the school as a Whole, and she's becoming a great girl. l30l ! She likes people and wants them to like her. Sometimes this spirit gets hidden a little, because a feeling of shyness dominates it. She's growing up into a world that makes her a little unsure of herself, but as her interests are widening, she's gaining confi- dence. She's beginning to meet a wider variety of boys than the ones from the Academy with whom she went to dancing class. Her interests in school are growing, too. She learned about mythology and made a complete replica of an ancient Roman house and has begun to take an active interest in current events. She seems to be doing what you would call broadening her horizons. Susie made some mistakes this year which cost her a lot of fun, but she seems to have profited from them. We hope she doesn't make anymore. YVe think shels going to get a lot of fun Ollt of life, and we wish her luck. l31l ont rout. left lo right: KI'l i'Y lloovitk. FlQl,Ici'1'Y VAULHAN. DIANE Kiixvox. She seems to have her eyes wide open ready to learn anything she can from other people. She takes a great deal of trouble in dressing properly. but she tries hard not to become stylized. Her social life is beginning to develop, and she's just becoming used to the round ol' parties and dates which will increase in her future. In about the eighth grade comes the exciting time ol' getting to know the boys under soft. indirect lights and slow dance music rather than under the sun and the shouts of the gang playing baseball. Susiels try- ing to take all this nonchalantly, but itls one of the most exciting moments of her life. Another noticeable thing is Susie's desire to take part in more activities of the school. She has the interest and ability to take up an activity and make a success of it. All she needs is a little more experience. l32l Ifrmzt row, left io right: 13111112 ciAMER1iR. SANDRA Swfxxsox, GA11. Susie seems to get great joy out of doing devilish deeds, but when you acc11se her, she just hums her favorite song, HAin't Misbehavingfl She doesn't usually do things out of plain meanness, but she does like her brand of fun. She has an aggressive friendliness which al111ost knocks you down at times. She's very like a pup who doesn,t quite know whatls the right thing to do, but she ro1nps around, having fun and licking everyone with a cold wet tongue. Along with her teasing. Susie is very smart. She learns quickly, although whenever itls convenient. a few rules might slip her mind. Shels clever and cute and although she's getting a few more spankings than usual, she's becoming mature and learning 111ore than she realizes. Junie Stringer, Miss Gunsolly HOCKEY SUMMIT DOXVNS NORTHROP 5-O The Summit Sizzlers tangled witl1 the Northrop Knaves on the Minneapolis turf on XVednesday, the twenty-filth ol' October. The last whistle of the senior game liound Summit out in lront Bell. The sophomores chalked up one goal, while the juniors and seniors tallied two apiece. All three games got off to slow starts but picked up speed and lorcelul- ness as they progressed. The games were rough, and Northrop put up a hard Hghtg however, Sum- mit's aggressiveness and accuracy proved victorious. SAINTS HOW' TO SUMNIIT 5-fl The day of October thirty-first, lound Sum- mit once again victorious, this time over Saint Mary's Hall at Faribault. The battle was close and hard fought on both sides. Together the freshmen and sophomores from Summit man- aged to score three times, while the Saints lound that opportunity only once. The Sum- mit juniors, hindered by lack ol' man power, remained scoreless, but the juniors from Fari- bault chalked up two. The roughest and lastest battle ol the day came when the seniors clashed. The Saints got the ball between the goal posts only once, but Summit managed to score twice, giving them the one point lead that saved the day. UNIORS TAKE TITLE The battle for the volleyball championship took place on December ll, between the Seniors and the juniors. Although the upper classmen stayed ahead during most of the game, they were finally beaten by a score of ill-25. The first quarter had good serving on both sides. but the Seniors surged ahead with the aid of Dris- eoll's spikes. The junior team regained itsell' and managed to lessen the gap between the two scores in the second period. Although the Seniors maintained their lead during the third period, the juniors came within three points of them through the strong serving of Langford and lNICclOV6'fll. The long rallies and excellent spiking on both sides in the last quarter height- cned the tension, but the Juniors worked hard together and had pulled into the lead by six points by the end of the game. td 9 PM' BASKETBALL JUNICRS BEAT SOPHOMCRES 1847 The championship basketball game was play- ed before a large crowd in the Summit gym on Tuesday, March 20. Both teams showed the energy and will to win, but the Juniors pushed a little harder to take the title. The first basket, made by the juniors, was followed closely by one for the Sophomores. The rest of the first three periods was close but uneventful except for the frequent fouling on both sides. The fourth period was the most exciting and had the most scoring. Both teams fought hard and well, but the Sophomores couldn't seem to connect with the basket as well as their opponents. Vlith the help of l3ingham's shots, Platt's rebound- ing, and McGox'ern's guarding the juniors cap- tured the championship despite Myers's skill at both forward and guard and the hard playing of Benz and Floan. .Xxxi-3 l.1'x'1'ifx and l,,wRA Fumx We take this opportunity to c'migratulati- the win- ners of the H350 tennis tournament.
