The answers to all of these questions, and more, we felt were part of the record of our school durung 1944 and through the use of a questionnaire we have secured as nearly as possible reliable answers to them It goes wuthout saying that the sum total of facts collected through the survey wull not when compiled guve a pucture of our student body that us accurate to the late cletaul Yet as the answers to these questuons would provude a great deal of unformatuon about a sungle unduvudual so un the composite they yueld an unterestung and useful body of facts about a representatuve group of young people the student populatuon of Summut Hugh School For example have you ever wondered to what extent we as a unut support the church and youth organuzatuons of our cuty? Apparently Summit High School students stand in a class much higher than the average in the East. Our records show that 535 of our population, under normal conditions, would go to college, 34f1 to business or technical school, the remaining 23f,'i would attend neither. Of the ones who would pursue some form of higher education, those interested in a profession represent 472 of the student body, those in busi- ness or industry 37' I , in liberal arts l9fi . Worthy of attention is that part of our school who would like to attend college but who, because of the lack of expenses, will not likely do so. Thirteen per cent are in that class. And now on a subject close to the thinking of all of us-national and international affairs. Great issues are being fought out at home as well as on the battle fronts. And how these issues are settled in the capitals of the world will in great part deter- mine the value of our eventual victory in the field. It is to the credit of our students that their judg- ment on many of the most controversial of these subjects is liberal and enlightened. Very much to the point, the survey shows that 79f'i of us believe post-war cooperation among governments will be the main factor in maintaining world peace, in contrast to the 1O'2 who think that isolationism is the way, and the 1l'j who insist this country should be top dog among the nations of the world. Concerning a year of post-war com- pulsory military training for youths between the ages of 17-21, S9'j of our student body fboys and girlsj were in favor, the remainder being opposed. What about our Government's policy toward business and industry when the war has ended? Examined closely the answers suggest some of the storm of controversy that will follow the coming of peace. Fifty-four per cent of our school population believe that Washington should impose fewer restrictions on business and industry, 52fQ favor a policy closely linked to that of the present, while l5'J would like to see still more curbs applied. Perhaps an even more controversial issue, what are our thoughts on labor unions? Going back to fundamentals, students were asked to appraise the steady growth of unions in this country. Ques- tioned as to whether it meant democracy was failing, they answered as follows: S224 expressed the opinion that the increased growth of unions indicated democracy was being threatened, while to 48f,j it meant democracy was working better. On another phase of the same subject the polling was more one-sided. Granting that unions have reached a new high in the power they wield, 7827? of us feel that organized labor should now clean house and accept more responsibility for good gov- ernment, but l1',Q think unions should be com- pletely liquidated, and 9'i that they should be left to function as they are. On this note we draw to a close our summary of the results of the survey. What it has revealed about us-our ways of life, our attitude toward school, our thought on significant current issues is important. May it add still more to our under- standing of what we as a single student body are. Perhaps time will change many of the opinions expressed here, as it will alter many of the condi- tions revealed here. Likewise will the faces on these pages change, the activities, even perhaps our present athletics. But today each stands as part of the record: how we looked, what we studied, who were our friends, our visitors, what our little triumphs, what our big successes, yes, and equally part of the record, what we thought during this year of a great and cruel conflict- 1944. However, one word -RAIN-can describe the season. All but three matches were rained out. WT lost our two matches with Millburn, l-4 and 2-3, won the match with Madison 3-2, and were beating Morristown when a sudden downpour halted it. Though our coach, Mr. Cliver. kept changing the dates, fate was against us. The team consisted of: Bob Marshall, Dick Stolz, George Kent, Eli Sagan, Lee Bartholemew, George W'alters, Haven North, Bert de Selding, and Clayton Elmer. All except the first two are still in school. This gives the team a fairly good start for the coming season. Kneeling, left to right: George XValters. Kenneth Clark. Eli Szigen. Paul Camilla. Holm ltvllu f' TRACK I r G The track season of 1943 will be long remembered by all of 400 X Summit High. .Besides winning three out of four dual-meets, the team took second place at the annual Suburban Conference Meet and placed near the top in the State meet at Montclair. The mile relay team took a third place at the Penn Relay Games in Philadelphia. The team was made up of a few veterans and three or four newcomers. The high point scorer was Captain Bill Thompson. Next in order were Art Raabe, Bill Wiebe, and Bill Clarke, the 1944 Captain- elect. Other letter winners were Dick Hufnail, Charlie Heising, War- ren Kohman, Ralph Walker, Stuart Nimmo, Fd Egan, John Eilbeck, George Sanford, and Don McLead. Of last year's lettermen only Wiebe, Clarke, and Hufnail will be on hand for this year's campaign, but Keough, Butler, Duncan, Reavey, Hollod, and McGiffin of last year's squad will also be back. So a good season may be anticipated for this year. BASEB LL The baseball team had a comparatively good season in 1943, win- ning four and losing Eve games. The squad consisted of several out- standing players, the foremost of these being Rocco Lollatc. Bud es- tablished himself as one of the outstanding players in the state by his brilliant hurling. His performances included two no-hit games. How- ever his fielding support wasn't of the same calibre as his pitching which accounts for the rather poor record. Lolatte, along with Yanotta and Bildner, was selected for the All-Conference team, and others who distinguished themselves were Geddis, Genualdi, Incandella, and George. A 4 3 Another change in the school curricula that is affecting most students is the change in the physical fitness program. To meet the serviceis demands and the general increased pressure of war-time living, the time requirement for physical education in the school has been increased. Boys receive instruction in drilling and the manual of arms. For boys and girls stress is placed on body building exercises and games that develop team-work and cooperation. Thus Summit High's students are being prepared physically for more healthful living and for greater service to their country. ,pq 4,0-.- ..a l ui? iiij.. f .2 043 1 Y' Q v x Q rr ,nuff Q ... Because this program is determined chiefly by the interests of students themselves, it is not surprising that this year it reflects sharply the desire we all have to further the war effort. Many of the clubs and other organizations of former years have ceased to operate. ln their places have come others much more timely. This does not mean that groups lilse the corridor committees, the class councils,'and the musical clubs have disappeared from our list of activities. They have not. Their work is ever presentg but the war has forced new duties even upon them. All our extracurricular organizations have found operation more difhcult during this very critical year, but they have functioned and, on the whole. well. Chief among our school organizations is the STUDENT COUNCIL, well led this year by Allen Bildner. Using a new system of representation, it began what promised to be a busy year. It recommended doing away with the divisional Victory Corps, since Summit High was already fulfilling the Corps requirements. To aid the war effort, temporary committees such as the War Stamps and Bonds, Conservation and Production, and W'ar Records were sponsored by the Council. At the request of civic authorities, the council was asked to participate in the work of the City Guidance Committee, designed for aiding in the solution of both war and post-war problems. Under direction of this group, Summit High also took a prominent part in the dedica- tion of the City's honor roll. - ii init- ,r. .tfli-Zlaiz. i ii r-U . iii. ,un Straw: 1 lm K, ox 5 eouuiuuuvll LQNINIU lx? lg, luc u le I I' uul.lI 1 roxx lv i:?'uu,l,W uuerwx tu rv ul Sciznqull I K muultuuuu Xl, Lruut I DL K nd hfxqnuu C ufhuu 'M l NIC 'lim lllllsl Iluelulnl ' l gpm 'UM ll K u uuu I' auoh I' lxwnu u Perfornuunug the ueru necessaru task of keep mg traffuc moxung smoothly un the school superwusung the corn dors, and tendung the doors durung assemblues THE BOYS CORRI DOR COMMITTEE us the job un a ver useful and eflaeuent vuau and the student bodu respects the commnttee members And susters to these boys are the mem bers of THE GIRLS CORRIDOR COM NIITTEE who patrol and prevent confusuon un theur part of the cor rudors Keepung order un the gurls locker alcoxe us one of theur blg jobs But theur tactful uuet please or Please dont TTI' I' U, uuuuu Lmlxll X uu. 1 4 ig QOIKRIHS? Men leav- ing for the Army were given a fine send off, and the Band really stepped out for the parade and dedication service of the Summit Honor Roll. Other evidence of the willingness of the Band to lend its services was its performance at the Boy Scout Court of Honor and by the assembly given at Edison School, and let's not forget the super job done by the BAND AND ORCHESTRA at their Annual Spring Concert last April. THE MAROON AND WHITE was started in the latter part of last year. This year, in spite of shortages of paper, ink, and stencils the staff successfully published the only wleekly paper in the conference. It has been enjoyed by all of us. I-Iave you been 'watching those posters in the halls? Have you listened to and heeded those notices to save clothing, etc.? The CONSERVATION AND PRODUCTION COMMITTEE! job is to see how much we're doing toward the war eHort. You'd better hurry if you haven't done much be- cause you might,be approached some day soon. IVhat will your answer be? An account of the DRAMATIC CI.'UB's activities during the year would include its regular meetings at which play reading is done and rehearsals take place for the pro- grams they present at assemblies. With .1 scarcity of manpower and with the students and faculty already carrying heavier loads than usual, it seemed that the show would be can- celed, but these obstacles were hurdled and 75 stu- dents put on a very entertaining show called, Well Roared, Lion, written, produced, and directed by our own Mr. Temple. Highlights of the evening were the performances of Ronny Corbett and Eli Sagen doing a really grand job as Betty and John, the two lovers. Marguerite Wickersham as Madame Pompaloni was tops g Anna Woodward, Perry Root, Alma MacCauly, John Mulligan, Parnel Gillilan, and Bernard Eaton also helped to make the show a success. For awhile we really thought Allison Osborne as Dotty, the other woman in the case, had johnny Wonnyu under her spell. Haven North, Robert Duncan, and Lee Bar- tholomew supplied most of the comedy as the pro- fessors, and a bang-up job they did. Yes, great credit goes to Mr. Temple for a lot of effort that was not in vain. 152, Q '57 c JAN' fv A? 580 S vs. APG L5-N '56 A 6 XLD YORCYS SERVICE 6 5 ArmN pau Xlarm 5 mast Cxulrewnnwc NM! lwnl Sdfxxcc D plum KU' Amcncfm yy, ,xx 1 S Q R nu ARS AUHN NNW mush Kfml C 5 O dun Xfnv TOT AL 9? 4.1 g KV R RQLX scHoOL HONG H SUMW1 me BY CLASSES V344 Fcbfuflry lA ymli' Sn llfl C 45' gl ml?
