Iiditor-in-Chief of the Top Dear Donald: The publication of the Year liook is materializing rapidly. I hope with you and your Staff that it will be accepted with a degree of satisfaction to the Student body as a whole. and with much interest and pleasure to the members of the graduating class. I had been made to feel that the Student demand for it was real. I later realized that its staff was ready and anxious to create the Hook and now l see it in the final stages of publication. The Hook itself has a place in the school life. lt definitely collects data on school life which is a valuable source of reininiscencc. It, perhaps, provides a little valuable and practical experience for certain members of the Staff. Hut its cost of production is beyond the ability of the average static. Its publication was made possible this year chieiiy because of the use of many old cuts. .-Xnother year new title cuts will be necessary: if so. this will bring the cost of the Hook considerably beyond the amount that can be raised by the Staff. I. therefore, feel that a publication similar in content and character will, again. be -of much concern another Fall. I realize that the creation of such a bool: annually will be a source of uncer- tainty and anxiety on the part of the Staff and its advisor. The sources of income are limited. and the number of subscribers is always doubtful. The Students must get fully and detinitely behind the project and sufvfwrf it-not depend upon organizations and home rooms for the extra help in money. The Year Hook is your Hook because -of your support. I have enjoyed working with you and your Staff and have appreciated the spirit and the response at all times. I am also mindful of the splendid attitude which the Senior Class has shown in its endeavor to make the publication possible. Sincerely yours. .lmiits li. li.XWI.lfY. In that time it has served a purpose which, though little known outside of its own membership, has in many ways been beneficial to Summit High School. The Club itself is a place where commercial students can meet and discuss their problems, and behind the club stands the commercial depart- ment of the school. This department trains the organization secretaries and business managers, prepares copy for the school publications, and assists the faculty generally in preparing mimeo- graphed and typewritten work. With constant growth in attendance and enthusiasm the Club gives promise to continue as a successful organization of Summit High School. F ort y-six 7 J' 4 ' Wasil f. x . I M51 -' s . On this terrible day, the 30th of October, you could catch glimpses of the trembling, frightened Freshmen sneaking around corners trying to avoid the mighty Second Classmen, who strutted their stuff in the halls. The ancient Sophomore witches had carefully patrolled the country to find the wildest man-eating mustang that roamed the plains, the strongest onions that could be grown anywhere were used for the pleasant nose rolling contest. Many other tortures were used but they are by far too terrible to think about. ,Nfter enduring such cruelty for the benefit of the Sophomores, the Freshmen surely needed some recreation. so they filed out to the gym for their much-needed rest. Cake. ice cream. and a good orchestra. XVho wouldn't have a good time under those conditions? So, naturally. a good time was had by all. Princeton Glee Club's animal concert. followed by a dance in Gymnasium, was given March 27. General Organization selected party occupied most of the evening of April 23. The Seniors were the honored guests at the animal junior Prom, held on Fri- day, March 12th. in the Gymnasium. The green decorations, which were approf priate at this season. added attractiveness to the occasion, while the punch bowl also proved popular and satisfying in its refreshing way. Each of the honored Senior Guests received a white rose with a few pieces of fern. The dance was pronounced a success by all those who had the good fortune to attend it. THE POOR MANS ORCHESTRA Orchestras were formed, you see. So no one should be bored. They try to make some harmony, But make one long discord. Some people say, the music's good, But the costume is what counts, One must have a Sporty Tux To rake down large amounts. That's why I like a radio, You don't see what they wear, You judge them by the music They send you through the air. Our bunch would like to broadcast, I know that for a fact. Our music is all harmony, Our looks are what detract. A. G. IMZAGRAUTH, '28. CHRISTMAS PLAY It has been the custom during the past two or three years for the Literary Society VVriting Group to furnish an original Christmas play. Accordingly, the Writing Group has written and presented, last December, in Assembly, their annual play, consisting of three scenes. This entertainment was greatly enhanced by some excellent carol singing rendered by members of the Glee Clubs. F iffy-seven TIME Things may come and things may go. but time goes on forever. It has always been. is, and always shall be. From the beginning of eternity, if it ever had a beginning, did not Time exist? W'as not the creation of the world measured by six days, Time? Seconds. minutes. hours, days, months. years, centuries, all refer to that inevitable, unceasable Time? XVho is life's closest associate but Time? From the cradle to the grave, Time always fills the background. Who realizes the impor- tance of that unending. tireless Time more than the victim in his death-bed? Does he not struggle to keep up with Time? Does he not crave for the last merciful minute, second of precious Time? One can picture a long, long, straight road that extends into the horizon of eternity, and upon it can be seen a quaint old man, bent with age, covered with dust, carrying a scythe in one hand and an hour glass in the other. One can see him slowly and steadily tramp up the endless road, never stopping, never ceasing, always moving on and on. It is true that he has been passed by another in the figure of Hermes. the god of speed, but as in the case of the turtle in the race with the hare, slow but sure wins the race. Now you see a Hermes in the shape of a human racer, a Roman chariot, an automobile. a train with its powerful locomotive, pass by him as if he were standing still. But wait! See. it is slowing up. it stops. it cannot go any further, and soon the old man overtakes it. Later you see another figure, perhaps' that modern, ingenious, mechanical device constructed by man, the aeroplane. rush by, leaving the old fel- low gasping, amazed. yet his steady tramp is not altered, and as he treads on and on. after awhile he passes the stranded figure that was once so active. that master- piece of mankind. Do what you will. Time will always loom up, sometimes, perhaps, unexpectedly. Like a thief in the night. he steals upon you, claims you, and you must obey him. Sometimes you may play with him, spurn him, drive him away, but in the end he will come back with a blow that will overpower you, unless you are prepared. From morning till night, what have you done, but stand by the roadside and do his bid- ding? Consider that during the day you are nothing but a slave to Time. Not one movement, not one thought that has not required Time, Time. As a conclusion, I might say that it took Time for you to read this and it took Time for me to write it. So there you are and here I am. a slave to TIME! Luis LLANso. '27. Fifty-eight 1 1 xg 5 QV s 5,ff,?'f' Q EQ . I ' ' MJ 1 :ij ,J Sugth xS, Lu Ps.
