We aimed to have every stIIdent who is interested in music a part of this orchestra and succeeded in getting many members. Our programs were arranged so that a great number could play. Some of the selections which have been rendered are. Serenade d'Amour, Pierneg Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffman, Offenbachg '6HIIngarian Dance, No. 5, Brahms, Salnt d'Amour, Elgar, Love's Dream After the Ball, Czebulkag Lion du Bal, Cilletg and The Last Waltz, from Oscar Strauss' Operetta. Mosman HIS year the Girls' High School Club met at noon on Thursdays at T the Y. W. C. A. The members filled three long tables and kept the committee busy supplying them with sandwiches, cocoa and cake. The lunches were all served by a volunteer committee which never failed to have plenty of Meats ready when the girls arrived. Most of the speakers this year were from Summit and were always a great inspiration and help to the club members. If there was no speaker the meeting usually consisted of using-songs and lively dis- cussions. ' The Club dressed about sixty dolls as Christmas gifts for the chil- dren of the Neighborhood House in North Summit. The dolls were dressed most attractively and the children were delighted with them. The annual party for the Summit Home for Children was given the week before Christmas. There was a glittering Christmas tree and Santa Claus found a present for every child. Peggy Matthews was chairman of the efficient committee which planned the games and pro- vided the refreshments-ice cream and cake. The children seemed to have a good time and the Club members surely enjoyed a happy after- noon. ln the middle of February the North-Eastern Field of the Y. W. C. A. held a conference at Atlantic City. Five of the Club girls, Mar- jorie Marsh, Lucie Wintermute, Eleanor Nelson, Jean Gaddis and Frances Ryman represented Summit. They brought back interesting reports and many new ideas. During Lent a Tuesday afternoon Bible Class., led by Mrs. Mosher took the place of the noon meetings. Throughout the year the girls have kept in mind the purpose of the Club, which is To promote a high standard of Christian fellowship and service, and of helping girls to attain the highest possible ideals, spiritually, mentally, physically and sociallyf, llllilvt I-I1-It 1922 OFFICERS l'rvsidvn1 ..... .... ........... . HISTORY OF SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL HE first schoolhouse was built in 1795 on the corner of Morris Avenue and Glenside Avenue, then called Feltville Road. The building was the typical little red schoolhouse, wherein was found the old arrangement of a center stove with the usual slab benches. In 1842 this building could not accommodate the increased number of pupils, so another one was built. This was never painted because the townspeople could not agree as to whether it should be red or white. In 1872 school was held in Edgaris Row on the corner of Union Place and Beechwood Road. ' A two-story red brick schoolhouse was built on the site of the present High School in 1878. This was called the Summit Public School. But it was not until 1883 that it became an accredited high school. Even then the grammar grades were in the same building and not until 1918 was it used exclusively for high school purposes. As the number of pupils increased each year it was found necessary to add to the original building and an addition of three stories was made in 1894. On the top floor, or Mattie, as it was popularly known, Miss Thompson had her chemistry room and cooking department. The janitor, with his family lived on the same floor. When the cooking classes were no longer held in the high school building a skylight was cut and the entire top Hoor made into a laboratory for chemistry and botany. During this time classes in manual training were instituted and even though the object of this course was not to teach carpentry, some of the boys became quite expert in the work. In 1911-12 further additions were made. An office was built on the rear of the building and new steel fire-escapes were put up. Even at this time the building was not large enough for the conducting of the graduation exercises, the first of which were held in Howard Hall in 1885. Connected with its history Summit High School has had varied and interesting events. In the early days there was a yellow cat which was very useful in carrying notes and furnishing amusement. In 1921 excitement was furnished by a fire which occurred on the eve of 'Lmidyear exams, the 'gexamsw however were not omitted. Classes were held during the rest of the year and part of the next school term in the base- ment of the Library, in the Y. M. C. A., and in the Presbyterian chapel. The following year the school was rebuilt and painted gray with green trimming. In 1922 on the fatal eve before umidyearsv another fire occurred, but did not cause quite as much damage as the previous one: the study hall and the walls and woodwork of the eastern entrance being the parts destroyed. Many efficient and enthusiastic teachers have given their time and interest toward making Summit High School one of the best in the State. The principals in the order of their succession are: Messrs. Collard. Schuyler, Lyon, Chapman, Bissel, Knapp, and Lathrop, Miss Connoly, Mr. Marsh, and Mr. Bartholomew. And now last, but by far the most important, comes something which is not yet history-a new high school building under construction on Morris Avenue, between Maple and Elm Streets. HAMMOND SW r iQL EVENTS WIT-twoo-twlt-twool came the call of the wild on the night of October 28 The high and mighty Senior Class of Summit High School was holding its class party amidst much l revelry and merry-making. The night of Hallowe'en was near SENIOR CLASS PARTY . . .,, I and the spooks and goblins had woven a thread of mystery through the air. A social indoor meet first attracted the Seniors' attention. Many shouts of laughter greeted the leader of the winning side as the silver loving cup was carried away in triumph. The baby picture contest was held in the gallery. Who would believe that our noble Seniors were really ever so cute and insignificant? At 10 oiclock cider, doughnuts and cake were served. From then on dancing was enjoyed until it was time to say 6'Good night. Up in the tree the old owl blinked with his two yellow eyes, one of which he slowly winked as again he uttered that strange and mournful cry- Twit-twoo Who's Who? 1922 ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION DANCE MID a delightful whirl of confusion and many happy couples, the A. A. dance, the very first of the year began at 8 o'clock, November 4, 1921. The orchestra buoyed up everyone's spirits and pep was aplenty. Mr. Woglom assumed his familiar role and led aground rob- l1ins ' by the score. At 11:30 the members of the faculty began to look around nervously and the first thing we knew the call rang out. The next will be the last dance! Then as usual, it was Home Again Bluesw and we meandered down the concrete stairways out into the chill No- vember night. IN ITIATION A pooks! SPOOKS! SPOOKS! No, it was not Hallowe'en, but S the Freshman Initiation, December 2, at Brayton School. Spooks! SPOOKS! SPOOKS! Sophomore initiators in the harrowing garb of the Klu Klux Klan glided among the fresh- men and with hollow voices uttered the words I WANT YOU I Clutch- ing the chosen few ffor there were so many that all could not be iuitiatedj they led them out upon the stage. Alas! their doom was sealedg they were forced to perform all sorts of stunts hy a troop of brownies: and one poor little ufreshiew had to serve' as a footstool for his Majesty, the President of the Sophomore Class. After the mock initiation the fresh- men, directed by Earl Merrill, repeated the oath of the General Organ- ization and oiiicially became a part of the school. It was then time for dancing. The poor freshmen, although rebelling strenuously, were sent home at 10 o'clock while the upper class men were allowed the privilege of dancing until 11:30 because they had graduated from the infant stage. THE JUNIOR PARTY - l E merrie Yuletiden was celebrated with befitting festivities by HY the Juniors and some members of the Faculty on December 16, in Lincoln Auditorium. The hall was appropriately dec- orated with Christmas trees bearing pop-corn and candy. Games were played, charades being especially enjoyed. As usual the refreshments proved to be a very popular feature. After which the pleasure of gliding about the floor to syncopated melodies, held the attention of the joy seekers until the closing moment of the Christmas Festivities. THE FOOTBALL BANQUET N Friday evening, January 13, the annual football banquet was held in Lincoln Auditorium. Mr. Hunter, coach of the 1921 1 team, presided. Between courses of a fine dinner, served by girls of Miss Hunt's Domestic Arts Class, the boys gave cheers and sang songs. Clifford Borden banged the ivories for the music.', ' ' Jack Willever was unanimously elected Captain of next year's eleven and made a little speech of thanks. Four members of the faculty ren- dered several ditties, serious and humorous, and were enthusiastically received. Short talks were made by Mr. Vlfoglom, Mr. Morse, Mr. Sprague, Mr. Bartholomew and Mr. Cliver. Coach Hunter thanked the players for their spirit of co-operation throughout the season, and Cap- tain Ray Willever spoke along the same lines. Ray called to mind sev- eral amusing incidents which had occurred on the practice field. In closing he wished the team a successful season for the following year. After the dinner the boys scattered to various parts for their part- ners in the dancing which followed. The Baby Grand Orchestra ren- dered the music. . About twenty-five players, the coach, the speakers and a press repre- sentative, attended the banquet. A . THE SOPIIOMORE CLASS PARTY N the snowy evening of March 11 the Sophomores met at Lincoln I School to enjoy their long delayed Class Party. Everyone joined in some exciting games until half-past ten. The boys then dis- played great skill in serving the refreshments, and dancing put zu finishing touch to the happy evening. C. ' AMHERST MUSICAL CLUBS CONCERT N March 31 the long looked-for event arrived, namely, the Am- herst Musical Club's Concert, and in spite of the severest of i storms, the Auditorium at Brayton was well filled, and not any- one regretted having ventured out into the downpour. The opening number was ulqord Jeffry Amherstf, then the Clubs delightfully rendered in succession, classical. college and negro selec- tions. Perhaps the Heatchw of the evening was a number given by two of the men entitled G'Slipping One Over on Gungaf' At the close of the concert the Amherst men in the audience were asked to join in sing- ing the-Alma Mater. The dancinghwhieh followed, concluded a thoroughly delightful evening. 1 W W WEARERS OF THE S Nineteen hundred and twenty-two RICHARD BADGLEY, baseball LE ROY BAUM, football, basketball JOHN BLACK, football, baseball WILLIAM FAITOUTE, football KENNETH HOLDEN, football, track AILEEN LAWRENCE, basketball fmanagerj Nineteen hundred CLIFFORD BORDEN, football fman- agerl ROBERT BROCKWAY, football WILLIAM BURKE, football REGINALD CUMMINS, baseball MARGARET DOYLE, basketball, track HERBERT HALL, baseball NATHANIEL MORSE, baseball Nineteen hundred EDWINA HAZEN, basketball KENNETH FULLER, football ROBERT MARSH, football GORDON MURRAY, football, baseball EARL MERRILL, football KATHERINE 0,HARA, basketball WILLIAM 0,MAHONEY, football LEONARD RICHARDS, football RAYMOND WILLEVER, football, bas A ketball, track and twenty-three EVERIT NELSON, football, basket- ball, track IRVING NELSON, basketball, track WILLIAM PAPIO, basketball EVELYN SAYRE, basketball, track MILDRED SMITH, track DONALD SWENSON, football, basket ball ' ELIZABETH WALLING, basketball and twenty-four HELEN PRINQLE, basketball J. HUNTER RIDIRON hopefuls were fewer this year than last and men of I experience were almost an unheard-of quantity. Nevertheless, .- f1'om the willing and enthusiastic candidates who reported, ' Coach Hunter built up a fine fighting machine. Seldom as heavy as their opponents, our eleven more than held its own by means of its steady determination and its tenacious, gritty spirit. The enemy's superior experience told against our team in the first game. Orange handed us an 13-0 defeat, but we came back in the second contest, in which the boys proved their mettle by downing Ro- selle, 13-0. We ran up against a tough proposition when we met Nutley, runners-up to the 1920 State Champs, and though the boys showed won- derful light and courage they were unable to hold the stronger team in check. Our grid squad's ability was again demonstrated to the satis- faction of a large gathering of home folks when Roselle Park fell victims to its prowess. The score was 27-0 and we won very handily. The Rahway battle ended with a 6-0 score upon the wrong side of the hoard. T he game was the roughest of the season. ' The greatest tussle of the year was played at Westfield on October 28, and as we were the victors., it is the more to our credit that both ,sides played a fine brand of ball. Our opponents captured our neilgp two games, hut this slight slump was counteracted by the vanquishmeiit of Cranford, 25-0, on Armistice Day, and the defeat of Morristown the fol- lowing week. The season closed with the annual clash with the Alumni, and ,although the graduates were the winners, the game was enjoyed by all concerned. i ' i , By winning from all the Class B county teams but Rahway., the eleven took second place in the League. Captain Raymond WiUever was awarded a place upon the all-county team. The excellent perform- ance of the team was in great part due to the untiring efforts of Mr. Hunter and the powerful hold Captain Willever had over his team mates. And here, too, must be said a few words of commendation for the second team, because the showing made by the varsity men would in no way have been possible without the co-operation and faithful work of 'the uscrubsf' - Dxriz OrroNENTs S.H.S. Miss GRACE J oNEs W HE girls' basketball season this year was unusually successful. Out of the te11 games played the only one lost was the first of the season with Vail Dean. The two games with Montclair and the first one with South Orange were the stiffest of the season. The South Orange game was exciting all the way through, the two teams running an even pace until the very end, when our team came out on top, leading by two points. The last game with Montclair was the fastest and hardest of all, with Montclair ahead until the end of the last quarter, when we tied the score. lu the five minutes played to decide the tie L'Wee', Walling made a basket and the victory was ours. The two games with our old rival, Chatham, the games with Boonton, Summit Y. W. C. A. and South Orange again were all easy victories. The season ended with the alumnae game, a very slow one, due to the fact that only one former high school star was able to play. The reason for our success is apparent when we consider thc indi- vidual ability of the girls on the team. Evelyn Sayre, captain, playing as side center, always bobbed up in the right place at the rightlftime. MDimples, with the firm backing and good team work of Wee was the star player, MSis Pringle and Kitty O'Hara as guards did much toward raising the standard of the team and carrying it on to victory. At center we find Edwina Hazen filling the bill. Aileen Lawrence, Marion Wauters, Grace Hemenway, Elizabeth Hiley and Ruth Steidle did splendid work as substitutes. A Our coach, Miss Jones, and the team are to be congratulated for their fine work. SUMMARY 1922 ' IJATE flP1'ONENTS S. H. S. Led by Captain Everit Nelson, the boys showed their heels to some of the best teams in these parts and played a crackerjack brand of basketball in every game. The systematic teamwork encouraged by Coach Hunter was in large part responsible for the wonderful showing made. And justly we say 'gwonderfulf' too, for is it not a remarkable record to go through a hard schedule of twenty-seven games with but nine defeats, to capture the Class B championship of the county, to tie for second place in Class A, to make' a run of seven consecutive victories, and to roll up 838 points UMMIT High School had something more last winter than a spirit 'to the opponent's 670? The baseball nine, in twelve games, won four and losteight. Captain Charlie Graydon and Gordon Murray did the pitching and Reggie Cummins worked behind the bat. A Victories were registered over the Faculty, Union, Irvington and Cranford. The best of these games was the Irvington contest which was played on Brayton field. Charlie Graydon pitched the whole game and shut out the visitors, who were let down with one hit, and that a single. SUMMARY 1921 DATE CUPPONENTS S.H.S. OPP. DATE flI'1'0NENTS S.H.S. The material, although 'tgreenf' is tak- ing to the game with vigor and interest. Manager Hardt has arranged a heavy schedule of eighteen games with strong teams, includ- ing contests with such schools as Battin, Irvington, East Orange, and with the second team of St. Benedict's Academy. Captain John Black and Coach Hunter are hopeful of having the large end of the scores chalked up to our credit. IQ Apr. Apr. Apr. KENNETH HOLDEN, '22 Manager .. ...... JOHN ERICSON, '23 Coach . .. .... DR. J. L. VANDERBEEK SEASON OF 1921 UMMIT High School's first track team was organized in 1921 and brought no small amount of credit to the school. The relay team, Holden, Nelson E., Nelson I. and Willever R., took third place at the State Interscholastic Meet, Class B, in the mile relay, and at the Penn Relays took fourth place for the same distance. Our dual meets were also entirely satisfactory, both Chatham and Battin being defeated. At the Union County Meet we captured, second place, losing first by only one point. Both boys and girls excelled noticeably in the dashes and relay. Commendation is due the squad and Coach Schmidlin, under whose direction the team was developed. SEASON OF 1922 There is every evidence that this season will be even a greater suc- cess than that of last year. The team is practically intact and has the added advantage of greater experience. The only meet entered thus far was the Penn Relays in which the relay team competed. In this race our runners won first place. In the same group were the following High Schools: Leonia, Mt. Holly, Palmyra, Salem, Wildwood, Lakewood, Penns Grove, Haddon Heights and West New York. The squad is fortunate in procuring the services of Dr. Vanderbeek, who is a former member of the track team of the University of Penn- sylvania.
