From year to year it endures as a place of calm in a troubled world, where the traditions of a century past influence the students and faculty of today. A place where alumni can come and relive their memories in the buildings which stand unchanged through the years. The Summit gives its students the strength to go out and face the world on their own, confident that they have had the benefit of The Summit experience to guide them through life. CONTENTS Montessori Primary Ciirls Middle School Boys Middle School Upper School 12 20 34 64 88 Seniors 130 A Tradition Of Summit . . H The Summit Country Day School is a school rich in N tradition. Throughout its long history it has served as a standard of excellence in Cincinnati. The five schools, Montessori, Primary, Girls Middle School, Boys Middle School, and the Upper School, offer an education from the earliest years up to college readiness. This book, however, is about a day in the life of The Summit! We're not here to talk about the 94 years of Summit's past historyp we're here to make more Summit history! The Summit is not simply old traditions and buildings standing through the ages, the true Summit is the students. The hundreds of students in every corner of the campus, learning and playing their way to adulthood, are the real Summit. So we'l1 start over now and talk about today - A Day in the Life of The Summit! sat S S. si. Dne by one showers come on, toasters start toasting, eggs begin frying, and the ageless cry of Mom, where's my uniform shirt? I can't find it! echoes across the seven hills of Cincinnati. Then, from as far away as Indiana, and as close in as next door, the students of The Summit Country Day School begin to arrive. Buses and cars fight for a space to stop and unload their passengers. Students' cars back and turn in the students' parking lot, searching for a place to park in a rapidly-shrinking lot. Greetings ring out across the pavement and students brave the departing cars as they run towards the school. H I ' J' lm, ,g fem . A , -nr' uni, HIMQ 7 ,. R'-N' l S Q 4. The pile of coats on top of the lockers begins to grow, and bookbags Tl-IUNK to the floor, amid the chorus of hellos greeting each new arrival. The owners of non- opening locks are heard chanting their daily spiel. Books cascade from messy lockers while the owners of neat lockers look on smugly. Homework papers and notebooks flutter above the crowd as bewildered students look frantically for help, and groups soon appear, sitting on the floor, as questions are answered 'T' it 5 and gossip is exchanged. People rush in and out, staring at a book and murmuring out loud, studying for that eary-morning test, drawing puzzled looks 4-at . 5' at from those they bump. Then a bell rings! People look up, stunned, lockers slam shut, and a few latecomers wail Wait, I'm not ready yet . . as another day at Summit Country Day begins. - Mary Landrigan iii!!! . Many activities which appear to be play to the casual observer are actually learning experiences. In addition to their classroom activities Montessori stu- dents enjoy special events and experiences. The children visit many different Cincin- nati sites during the school year. The stu- dents also perform an annual Christmas play for family and friends. Parents' Day is another special experience for both parents and students. Parents' Day provides the parents with a chance to catch a small glimpse of what a day in the life of a Mon- tessori student really is. - Nupur Tandon Top Right -- Flying high with a smile, Manisha Hicks enjoys a break, Center Right - The Montessori cheerleaders show spirit at a pep-rally. Prom reading a book to having physical education in the new gym, there is always something new going on in the Primary. The spirit in the Primary begins with each individual student and through years of communicating with oneianother, extends to the whole school. Whether it's playing on the playground or studying in the class- room, the students are exuberant and ai- ways willing to answer questions. Life in the Primary also includes activi- ties such as plays performed by the stu- dents and Pun Day. These activities provide added spirit and friendship in the days at the Primary. The end of the clay brings joy and excitement as the students rush to get their books and coats before cars and buses arrive. ,The Pri' mary students leave school with a feeling of satisfaction after another day well-sont at the Primary. -. --W Erin O'Donnell i - Top M- Janine Campbell and Megan Elicker wonder if there is life beyond Primary. In this heart-warming play the Toymaker fMelinda I-layesl creates many realistic dolls which can play, talk, and think. The only thing they can not do is love. The Toymaker is very selfish about them, and refuses to sell even one to the customers ll-leather Fath and Lindsey Toddj. His plans are foiled when he fashions Sunny fAllison Verdeberl. She starts a rebellion with all the dolls except one clown fEurie Leej. Finally, they discov- er hearts in a locked trunk and all receive one, including the unwilling Toymaker and clown. Then the Christmas Spirit 1Theresa Ruthmanj appears and everyone feels the true joy of Christmas. Following mass, the four teams began the grueling competition that was to last three hours. The first events were the less-taxing short distance races. The grand finale was the test of muscle and strength, the tug-of-war, in which Alpha proved to have the final pull. After lunch the infamous eighth grade softball stars tried to prove to their mothers their prowess on the field. After soaking up the atmosphere of long dresses and hand- dipped candles, it was on to Washing- ton. For two incredibly fast-paced days our travelers saw just about ev- ery landmark of our country's history humanly possible! Not only did their historical sense develop, the girls also rated cateterias and restaurants in the Washington area. The unanimous de- cision is that Morrison's was no good . The week started out with the truly bizarre Clash Day. Plaids stripes, checks and dots were most successfully combined for nauseat- ing effect by Bobby Luce, Wendy Conlan, and Wyndee Parker. Tuesday was Teacher Appre- ciation Day, Wednesdays annual Walk was rained out, but this did nothing to lower the adrenaline caused by the shocking upset at the Student-Faculty volleyball game, which was 2- 1 in the l5aculty's favor. On Thursday the school welcomed student representatives from AFS with friendly curiosity. The fall sports teams wore their jerseys on Blue Day in antici- pation of the pep rally in which the entire school showed Summit Pride. From 8:00 to midnight, Smokin' and the Students rocked the Summit Pavillion with spectacular music from the late 15O's and early '60's. The Students, who have acquired a cult following at the Summit, played such greats as Shout and My Girl as a large, receptive crowd boo- gied down . Although the band needed a break, the students did not as the music turned from pre-Beatles to 1984 break- ing. Many of the Freshman boys dis- played their talents for dancing in the streets during intermissions. Both the students and alumni agreed that this Homecoming was an unsurmounted success in achieving a sense of united enthusiasm for the student community. - Betsy Mullins .4121 l ..-..-.J A Great Kickoff, A Great Season! 1984 was the Year of the Quarterback as three different Knights led the team to an 8-2 record. Injury to senior Steve Tyrrell, who engineered three victories to open the season, brought Brian Talty and Mike Collins into action to complete the season with five victories in seven games. A 52-6 Homecoming victory over Landmark was highlighted by Chris Rosser's two touchdowns in two attempts. A 55 yard per carry average has to be a record! The Knights concluded the season with a 42-6 thumping of Country Day - the fourth straight over the Indians. The Class of '85 never lost a football or basketball game to their arch rival Indians! The five juniors of the Class of '86 have high expectations of continuing the string and making the playoffs for the first time. - Farrell Ackley First Row -1. Connell, B. Parker, M. Ryan, K. Soccer is fast becoming a great American pastime. Summit's soccer history is typical of this whirlwind infatuation with a game that for so long has been a mainstay of European sports. This year, the boys had good-sized varsity and reserve teams which both did respectably during the season. Many of the players are becoming quite adept at the finer points of ball handling, and the new freshmen show promise for the future. If you can't think of an answer to this question, then you are a fan of the Summit Boys' Tennis Team! A new coach, a lot of new players and a new season combined to produce a team that showed a lot of promise. They made it into tournament play, where they demonstrated their skill and verified the fact that soon they will be the carefully honed players who will dominate the league! The Girls' Tennis Team is a young aspiring one which shows promise to achieve great accomplishments. Com- prised of Jill Verdin, Elsa C-erwin, Brandi Cale, julie McLaughlin, Kelly Conners, Heather Blake, Kathy Gayol, Laura LaLonde, Leslie Kropp and Holly Friesz, this group did not emerge victorious in many matches, yet they gained the prestige of placing third in the Miami Valley High School Invitational at Dayton. In the sectionals, individuals also succeeded, including Laura LaLonde, who advanced a round, the doubles couple of Holly Friesz and Elsa Cerwin, who progressed two rounds, and team captain Jill Verdin, who advanced three. The team will miss Jill, the sole senior, who led the team with her experience, fine attitude, and sense of humor. These promising underclassmen have de- veloped a strong spirit of camaraderie and eagerness to improve on their present abilities. The wres- tling team was lead by Captain Dave Hickenlooper who set a new school record with the quickest pin in 11 seconds. Next year the team can look for leadership from Dave Celesti, john Fisher, and Tim LeFevers. The volleyball team had another season of growth which will lead to an outstanding team. With the alternation of captains, Mrs. Shuba gave everyone on the team the opportunity to lead. Kitty Hill was placed on the second team, and Stacia Foss received an honorable mention for MVC of 1985. The team concluded its season with Sth placement in the league. - Kitty Hill 5 f 1 is I . Laura And Joanna Haas - A Winning Combination For Summit Basketball Although the 1984-85 Summit Girls Basketball Team experienced some difficulties during its season, the expertise of the Haas sisters cannot be denied. Coach Laura Haas, who teaches physical education and health classes at the Summit, encouraged a relatively young team to grow and develop new skills as well as develop new confi- dence in their abilities. Cvercoming any possible sibling rivalry, Senior Joanna Haas was able to perform admirably to become one of the team's leading scorers. it is not often that a pair of sisters can cooperate this smoothly and still maintain their individuality. Although they may have not fullfilled preseason expectations, they served as great building blocks for the future. The Girls' Softball team, coached by Diego Esquibel, combined the experience of veterans with the enthusiasm of new members. Seniors Julie Stautberg, Gina Ryan and Joanna Haas provided true and necessary leadership. The Track team, consisting of four girls and seventeen boys, was stocked with many new run- ners, all of whom provided enthusiasm and never-ceasing fervor. The running program was strengthened to a consid- erable depth. Coach Laura Haas molded her constiuents towards future success. Musical produc- tions, fine arts programs, excerpts from an opera, plays, and even a melo-drama have been presented with a professional flair. The air-conditioned theater with its new lighting system permits greater creativity and flexibil- ity in addition to providing improved comfort and illumination. Two trips overseas during spring break were cause for celebration for nineteen Sum- mit students. One group visited France, ltaly, and Switzerland at the same time the second toured West and East Crermany. Four Summit families - the Lambs, O'Donnells, Davises, and Bergers - shared their homes and the Summit Spirit with students from France and Colombia during the summer of 1985. The ring is a visible sign of your link with the Summit in time to come said Mrs. Carole Pultz at the annual junior C1irls' Ring Ceremony. The ceremony is traditionally kept a secret by the Senior girls from the Iu- nior girls and this year was no excep- tion. When the surprised and expec- tant girls were taken out of class and assembled in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Mrs. Fultz gave an in- spiring talk about the significance of the rings, and each Senior girl pre- sented a junior girl with her ring and a quote selected by the Senior. After the ceremony in the chapel, all the girls went to a small reception in the Alumni Parlor with cake and soft drinks for all. And as one happy recipient so aptly put it. After a year of clanging bells, stomping feet, and excited voices, the hallways and classrooms are still. A few workers rattle about, working to prepare for next year's hordes. A hot breeze loses its excitement as it dispiritedly wafts through the empty rooms. The smell of fresh-cut grass fills the air so recent- ly punctuated with shouts and backing cars. A car full of students drives past, its occupants barely giving the school a glance as they busy themselves with the sum- mer. But fall will come again, with its hustle and bustle, and until then, the school waits patiently. - Mary Landrigan -Zxiazf' -W-A s,,,,,.,,,.,...W. ,..,,,....-,..W.W-x- fwwjlxym m, ....- ---- 'ww W 4 ,.....a..A.., .M,.m.,M-d6WN ,.,..M,,, , .MV W A , ag, .,..a.,.,.,.,t,,.,wW - ,f:.W.,4.m- fy Clockwise from Above - Li tht streams into a H -E quiet sthoolg A last few students linger, Climbing into the car to go homey The empty halls , S i 5 190 3 l 5 E 4 I 'Am N ni., fy? 0 A i if if X25 X I . .sv h n n N, n n .sm , 'x ' L 1 f 0 .
