From picture scheduling, to writing copy, from ad selling to reading page proofs - all comprise the varied duties of the annual staff member. Leaders of the staff, Sarah Wattenbarger, Editor, and June Kirkpatrick, Business Manager, have co-ordinated the two phases of annual making into this record of the school year - 1964-1965. Varied colors, in keeping with the many facets of a teen's life, are the staff's expression of the theme of this annual, A Teen's World. ' OPPOSITE PAGE: SARAH WATTENBARGER, Editor JUNE KIRKPATRICK, Business Manager PHYLIS HERRMANN, Assistant Editor DONNA BARNETT, Assistant Business Manager DEDICA TIO To our friend, confidante, and advisor. When we needed a helping hand, you were always ready with a word of encouragement We consider it our good fortune to have been students in your classroom. The Seniors of 1965 are deeply grateful to you, Mrs. Lewis, for preparing us for our future in the college world. Our studies in your classroom have been many colorful and rewarding experiences For your help on the Cat's Tale, the entire school would like to take this oppor- tunity to express its thanks to you. It is with deep gratitude and devotion that we dedicate to you, this our 1965 Cat's Paw. Hit that line with all of your might, Forward, onward, straight down the field, Show them, Wildcats never will yield, Rah! Rah! Rah! Keep our colors flying on high, Never let a foernan get by, Victory, Victory, that is our cry! Victory for old Sulphur High! SCHOOL COLORS Blue and Gold SCHOOL MASCOT Wildcat Teenagers in classes study everything from ping-pong to bio- chemistry. We are young and eager students who ask an end- less number of questions and re- ceive the answers with readiness and understanding. During the locker breaks, donuts are bought, books are dropped and laughter is heard, but when the bell rings, a strange quietness follows. In classes we learn to pay at- tention, to work toward a certain goal, and to ap- preciate the hard working teachers who help us so muchg but most of all, in classes, we teenagers are learning. It's the joy of finally finishing that confusing freshman year . . . a time to actually be an accepted participant in the whirl of high school activities . . . a year in which to study a little and have a lot of fun. It's ayear of dates and happy hours. Really it's the most carefree, fun-filled year in life. A Sophomore has risen from the 1owly freshman's step, yet he has not hit the endless work of the Junior or the sentimentality of the Senior. The climax of the home coming activities was the presentation of Linda Morris as the 1964 Homecoming Queen during the pre-game ceremonies of the Sulphur Springs-South Garland game. The annual affair was boosted by thefighting colors of blue and gold being worn by the entire student body, and the two pep rallies held in honor of the affair. Lake Highlands is the second school in the Richardson district, but is located nearly seven miles from Richardson - in Northeast Dallas. Wildcats Close Season W ith 7-0 Loss to VIC BRITTAIN JAMES CAMPBELL l52 it District Champs Bonham The 1964 football team at Sulphur Springs High School took a giant step forward. For the first time in the history of the school we played top teams all theway. We opened Olll' season against Paris from class '7AAAA, and won 14-8 after a hard battle. Then we took on Texar- kana, winner of 4-AAAA this year and got beat. , We came back to defeat Terrell by a score of 14-8 in a rough, tough game. This ended our non-district games. We opened our district 6AAA with a 40 -8 victory over Sough Gar- land, one of the new schools in the district. Then came big McKin- ney. We felt we were a little tight after the game because we lost by a score of 24 -6, however, the score is no indication of the game. We just made too many mistakes to win. Next was Lake Highlands, the other 6AAA school. We knew we had to win to -stay in the race. In the last quarter Lake Highlands went ahead 13-85 we took the ball and drove 65 yards to the one inch line. ---? We did not get the score. This will live in our hearts forever. The Wildcats were not through. We won the next three games. Then came district champs - Bonham. After three full quarters, Bon- ham finally scored to break the ice in a defensive battleg they won 7-0. The season is overg the years may pass, but the Wildcats will never forget 1964. These boys are champions in character, attitude, and desire. Let us not forget that the difference between the champion and just another person is measured by inches and the little things he does in life, not miles or big things. We challenge you: Give life everything you have - it will be worth it all. SARAH WATTENBARGER Editor PHYLIS HERRMANN Assistant Editor Hard Work Proves Rewarding This year 's Annual staff has worked many long, hard hours to prepare the best yearbook yet. A yearbook is not just a group of pages with pictures and writing enclosed in a hard back binding, but it is a sample of the memories, the experiences, the good times, the hard work, and everything else that compiles school life. Amid the gripes and groans, the mistakes, the fits of panic, and the heart failures, the annual staff has enjoyed striving to make this year 's annual the best! He urges that boys are responsible for keep- ' ing the yard neat and the grass cut . . . some things girls aren't expected to do. Norman points out to Sandra the many hours he spends working on his car to keep it in top notch con- dition. l98 When arguments begin over who has the hardest life, neither boys nor girls have a clear advantage. Teenage Girls are expected to wash dishes, iron their own clothes, and help with spring cleaning . Popular senior moans her plight as she spoofs about her chores! I99 Who Has the Mosi Fun But no matter who has the roughest time, it's certainly a toss -up over who gets the most fun out of life! Norman is determined to win the argument and demonstrate the kick boys get out of sports. But the most fun of all is standing on a corner watch- ing a11 the girls go by! Wait just a minute . . . Sandra has something to say about the situation . Professional hair styles or original styles are just one of the priviledges that members of the fairer sex can enjoy. Untstnnding Students Recognized at Honor Assemblies As Mr. Scott called out the names of each student, Mr. Drake gave each one an honor card. Wanda Dodd received a gold card which represented the gold honor roll, or the A honor roll. Senior Judy Jackson was among the many students who received a gold card for being on the A hon OI roll . Those students who made the B honor roll were awarded the blue honor card. Hiring the awards assembly, the cheer- leaders and the boys who lettered in a sport were given their letter jackets. Jacky Allen received his jacket with great joy. 203 Richard Persinger, NHS president, served as Master of Ceremonies at the assembly held in February. The assembly was sponsored by the National Honor Society. All the proceeds went to the March of Dimes drive held at Sulphur Springs High School. The student body enjoyed acts by various groups of students and the coaches. After performing to a jazz routine, eighteen girls and one alternate were picked for the Blue Blazes. Officer tryouts followed. The entire corps corn- peted for officer positions. Five girls were selected by the judges. The corps elected a captain. Mrs. Jon Rhodes, instructor, appointed the co-captains, and the corps elected two line officers. Pride in a Teen as World It takes many things to win a DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP. The boys who participate must be dedicated to this goalg the school and student body must have enthusiasm and support the teamg and the community must support both the team and the school. All of these things has been very evident and are the reasons for the success of the 1964-65 WILDCATS . It has been a gratifying experience to me to have played a role and to have been a part of it all. It is a great honor to be a small part of District 6-AAA's Championship basketball team, not only because of the personal satisfaction, but also because of the close association with a fine coach and a great group of boys. Being able to represent your school with pride is also a great honor. SAMMY ATTLESEY To play on a District Champion team is some- thing I have always dreamed of, but I never thought it would come true. Silphur Springs has been so close yet so far the last two years. I am just happy to be a part of this 1964-65 District Champion team. IKE HARPER Being part of a team that has succeeded in win- ning district has given me a feeling I have never be- fore experienced. District Championship is what the team was working for and we won it. We have suc- ceeded in winning district, and now we are heading for state. MIKE MCKINNEY Being district champions is a great honor for the school as well as for the team. It is a great feeling to'know everyone is proud of you and appreciates what you have done. JAMES Sl-IEFFIELD Being a member of the district champion team during my Sophomore year is something that I had thought about but never dreamed would happen. It is one of the biggest thrills that I have ever experi- enced. JOEL SHEFFIELD Coach Leon Kennedy Winning the District 6-AAA Championship would be something in itself but winning under such a great coach makes the difference. Even to be a small part of that team fills one with pride. CHARLES BRIM A sense of accomplishment is the most rewarding thing about being a member of the 1965 Wildcats, Champions of 6 -AAA. Although we were picked to finish 3rd or 4th, we won the title because of our hustle and desire. I know I will never forget the spirit shown by the coaches, cheerleaders, student body, and everyone else concemed with this team. TOMMY JOHNSTON The fact that we weren't supposed to even be in the running makes our winning the district title very satisfying. Coach Kennedy has come so close the last two years that I am very happy we could win for him this year. It is a thrill to have the student body and the townspeople behind you. I'll never forget the Lake Highlands game or the expression on Coach Kennedy's face the night we clinched the title. MIKE PASSONS Being district champions is one of the greatest achievements that we can have. As far as feelings are concemed, I have no new outlook except for the feeling of satisfaction that I have done my best to represent my school through basketball. THOMAS WRIGHT 209 District 6-AAA Ike Harper, Junior starter for the Wildcats, just can't decide whether or not he's brave enough to try to make that basket. No telling what goes through his mind as he gazes at that orange ring with the net hanging from it! I ! Senior Mike Passons battles for the tip-off in action against the Green ville Lions. Joel Sheffield and Thomas Wright stand ready for the ball to bounce their way. The Wildcats won the district battle 57 to 42 at the Greenville gymnasium hampions in Action. Thomas Wright tries his skill at be- ing a ballet dancer as he leaps into the air while attempting to score two points for the Wildcats. The South Garland boys tried their best to down the Wildcats, but their attempt was unsuccessful, with the final score being '71 for the Wild- cats and 62 for the Colonels. It seems as if the Wildcats and the South Garland Colonels are spell- bound for a split second as they watch to see if Mike Passons can make his two points. There were many, many exciting seconds like this one, but the Wildcats always managed to come out on top. In the Gainesville game played at Sulphur Springs, Sammy Attlesey charges right in there to try to snatch that ball away from the Leo pards, while Joel Sheffield anxious ly watches from a distance. The Wildcats defeated the Leopards 70-45. In a world where transistor radios, personal phones, and hi-fis are re- garded as neces- sities, not luxu- ries, teenagers are just bound to pos- sess a tremendous buying power. Appeal, though, is what really counts. Every product we buy fits into a spe- cial corner of our sometimes wacky, sometimes dreamy, sometimes serious world. Through advertis- ing, merchants have thrust into public view a unique imageof the American teen-an image which flaunts our ever changing fancy and which whis- pers about a down- to-earth practi- cality that is all ours. In these blooming, miraculous years a strange new force within each of us pushes forward and opens up an exciting new world - a world where club members rack their brains to come up with the most original party ideas, where giving the ball teams that extra little boost is worth being drenched to the skin. A11 we do is project our creativeness, our care, and our enthusiasm into living. Those treasured years of high school life will not remain foreverg yet the memories will remain. The quiet walks by still, mirror-like lakes are often times of retrospect. It is then that a teenager begins to search his innermost feelings, groping for the truth of tomorrow. The misty memories of the years that are past - the doubts and fears, the hopes and aims - become vivid when a teenager pauses to look again at a scrapbook bulging with souvenirs. Today is a teen 's world - tomorrow an adult's world.
