The National Rodeo was held in Sulphur in 1951 when 68 contestants from tive states participated. ln 1958 the National Rodeo was again held in Sulphur when 150 contestants took part. Believing that participation in rodeo events is a wholesome activity tor high school students, numbers of farmers, ranchers, and businessmen of the Sulphur area have supported the rodeo since its beginning by serving on the many committees needed to make arrangements for the contests. They have also aided financially when necessary. This same group has provided all the prizes to be awarded winners in the National Rodeo. Leading the rodeo activities has been John D. Vallot, F.F.A. advisor, who is completing his term as President of the National High School Rodeo Association. Sulphur High School Principal B. S. Walker has supervised all the rodeos and has been very instrumental in their success. 1g,f,f,1.' wif' . f- M fi, as-- , She . Dunes c CHAMPIONSHIP RODEO - S l 4 qs. Q A I, M A . 3 73 f , A. The curtain opened on an old southern garden scene-the second annual beauty pageant was under way. The suspense mounted, as one by one, the girls, carrying the parasols with their numbers displayed, proudly paraded down the steps. They proceeded across the floor to face the judges, and then to their seats in front of the stage. Zilda Sonnier and Larry Morgan served as mistress and master of ceremonies. A floor show featuring a dance by Donna Taylor, a marimba trio by Karen Collins, George McMillian, and Mrs. Von Ellender, and entertainment by Larry Morgan, was presented to the audience while the judges retired to make their difficult decision. A silence fell over the audience as the judges returned. As the twelve winners were announced, they were called to the stage, where Ernie June Silcott presented each of the lucky twelve with a blue ribbon, upon which was imprinted in gold the coveted words Pageant's Pick. 22, fi mgvf rr Aff? ab in- 'i t Lt. The Tors won 8 meets, including the Calcasieu Parish Meet, and the 2AAA district meet. The team also placed 2nd in the Gulf Coast meet, 3rd in the S.L.I. relays, and 12th in the state meet. With only six lettermen retuming from last year's team, the possibilities of developing into a winning team seemed, at first, very slim. However, as the weeks of hard work faded behind, ,, ' w- there developed within this group of boys a buming desire to leam, to win, to work hard, and to sacrifice self-esteem for the good of the team. The results of the 1958 season show what the above factors and talent can produce. Team scores were Sulphur 93, Lake Charles 75, Lafayette 58V2, LaGrange 34V2, Bolton 22, Jennings 17. Sulphur captured only 5 first places including a record breaking triumph in the 440 relay. Nevertheless, the Tors picked up at least three points in every track event and not less than two in any field event. The 440 relay team was never beaten during the 1958 season by a 2AAA team. ' OFFICERS The National Gold Emblem award is designed to give recognition to a chapter of Future Farmers of America in accomplishing outstanding programs of activities, and in providing valuable education experiences for the en- tire membership. The avvard is administered by the Na- tional Board of Student Officers and the National Board of Directors of the F.F.A., through the lJ.S. Office of Vocational Education. A planned program is formulated at the beginning of each year by the chapter members. This program must list activities, committees responsible for each, goals or obiectives, and ways and means to be used in reaching each obiective. Activities must include: supervised prac- tice activities, cooperative activities, community service activities, leadership activities, earnings and savings ac- tivities, conduct of meeting activities, scholarship activi- ties, recreational activities, and general activities. To receive due consideration in the National Best Chapter contest, it is necessary that the chapter report of accom- plishments at the end of the year be reported on three different forms. The State association of F.F.A. will consider the accomplishments, check on the group and will recommend to the National Association of the chapter being selected as State Best Chapter. The National association in turn follow the same procedure as the State Association. The size of the group has nothing to do with determining its recognition. It is simply based on all activities, re- sult attained by activities and coordination of the chaptenrnembers in dealing with agriculture. Also, the many winnings in various activities, locally and in state, improves the ability of students in agriculture. Both the interest shown and actual accomplishments over a period of years give ample evidence of the effectiveness of the best chapter award. The award has been a valuable aid, on both State and National level, in stimulating individual and cooperative effort and in crystallizing chapter programs of work into a series of worthwhile undertakings. 4 Miss 5 s ' B TAY 'WE,fifCB5EN DAIRY Przooucts iuootrsie TEAM John Dever, Wiley Dunn, Keith Wing IO9 It Q I 2 ROW T1 Terry Richaro BtlTy Bake' J.
