'v-.,,xN v JERRY POLLARD, Guard NEW lBERlA The spirited Tornadoes fenced in the mighty Semar of New Iberia and held him to 7 points in a hard fought contest. The Jackets managed to hang on un- til the last quarter when Ray and Hynes scored touchdowns to break the game open for the Tors. This made the final score 27 to 7 as Hynes had scored twice in the first half. Howard kicked three extra points. The defensive unit carried the load in this game as the Tors had trouble crossing the double stripe against a strong Yellow Jacket defense. Outstanding de- fensive men were Nix, Caldwell, and Paleremo. One reason why Sulphur's defensive excelled against Baton Rouge- Team position. CHARLES BONNIN, Guard PIE SONNIER, Halfback RAY KEEVER, End FRED KRESSMAN, Halfback 'E I 'Ht lf nd ,fi Tj, JOHN LASALLE, Halfback ORAN LEE LEWIS, Quarterback MARLIN BRIGHT, Halfback JACKIE HEBERT, Center ISTROUMA The mighty Istrouma Indians with the fabulous Cannon and Guidry ran into a fast, strong, and determined team from Sul- phur which hadn't read all the advanced notices that made them underdogs to the tune of four to five touchdowns. Great team play and an unyielding de- fense enabled Sulphur to shack- le Cannon and emerge with a 7-7 tie. The Tornado had begun to blow. Hynes scored the lone Sulphur touchdown and Howard kicked the important point. Moss, Loomis, Martin, and Hynes as well as the entire team were outstanding on defense. December 9, T955 Istrouma blasted Fair Park 40-6 to win Class AAA State Championship. Cannon scored three touchdowns and Guidry scored two. 85 Nolan Viator intercepts pass against Bolton to halt desperate drive in fourth quarter. NOLAN VIATOR, Quarterback WILFRED CLOYD, End BOLTON Bolton was the second con- ference foe to fall to the fast moving and hard hitting team from Sulphur. Although Bolton was up for the game due to their homecom- ing, a stout Tor defense led by such standouts as Nolan Viator and Douglas Lanier, held the Bears to a lone touchdown on the last play of the game. An alert pass defense held Bolton to 54 yards in the air and interw cepted three tosses. ln the meantime a spurting offense scored three touchdowns for Sulphur, two by Hynes and one by Martin. The Tors I8-the Bears 7. JERRY NELSON, End Semar of New Iberia stopped by SulpIwr's forward wall. Bill Hebert makes tackle. RICHARD VICE, Halfback RALPH BELL, End JOHN WARREN FAULK, Fullback 9'-it I 1 CHESTER HENNINGTON Fullback ROBERT BEGLIS, End KENNETH LEBRUN, Tackle L ULYSSES DOMINQUE, Tackle KELLY McFARLAIN Center The i955 homecoming was a big success as the grid- men did their part by trouncing the Baton Rouge Bull- dogs 26-7. Hard tackling and blocking stood out in anoth- er team win. The third single wing team on the schedule went down to defeat as a hard charging line and an alert backfield bottled up the Bulldogs runners . . . Outstanding defen- sive men for the Tor team were Howell, Guidry, and Pollard. Henderson scored the first touchdown, behind a fast moving offensive line, from three yards out. Also in the first half Hynes took a pass on the ten from Henderson and raced across the goal. ln the second half Baton Rouge came back strong and scored drawing within six points of the Tors. Then Martin scored from 30 yards out and intercepted a pass for the last touchdown. Howard kicked both extra points. 87 GARY WILKERSON, Tackle JIMMY FONTENOT, Guard LAFAYETTE The Tors hit their stride offensively as almost every play seemed to produce yardage against Lafayette. With Martin scoring twice and Ray, Hen- derson, and Hynes one each, we led at halftime 32-O. Second and third string boys played all the third quarter in which Lafayette scored two touchdowns. The first defensive team stopped all scoring by Nu- gent and Dearborne in the last quarter. Next year's offensive team managed to control the ball almost the entire quarter. Final score was Sulphur 39, La- fayette T3 as Ardoin produced the last score on a pass from Henderson. Howard kicked one and Mar- tin booted two extra points. Larry Viator and Morris Van Looked good on de- fense. ROBERT BAKER, Guard LAGRANGE The LaGrange Gators were the second conference foe to fall in as many weeks as the Tors began to gain steam again. After a closely contested first quarter in which the Gators marched into Tor terri- tory a couple of times, the Tors went on to win 40-6. The throwing and running of Henderson moved the Sulphur team along in a fashion that de- noted championship form. The Tornado line led by Fugatt and Jacobsen opened big holes in the Gator forward wall as six players figured into the scoring. Hynes showed the way with two six pointers. Ray Henderson, Lanier, and Nelson contributed one score apiece. Howard kicked three points after touchdowns and Lanier booted the fourth in the end zone for six points. The entire Sulphur line led by Akins on defense and Jacobsen and Fugatt on offense did a magnifi- cent iob. LAKE CHARLES The Tornadoes couldn't do anything right as a good Lake Charles team steamed us to the tune of I9-O. This marked the third time in as many years that the Tors fell victim to the Wildcats. As all vic- tories were team victories this was a defeat marked by the downfall of the entire team rather than one or a few individuals. n ,..,. li! nfs 1,54 Ray's loose as Fugarf came in for block in Baton Rouge game!
