May it help them to know that we, too, miss him and share a common grief. He'll always live on in our memories as one who gave to us so generously of his time and understanding. Coach Cox came to us from Wewoka in 1945. He was our head football coach until his death, in 1955. During his successful career here he won 59 out of 72 games. It was in September of 1942. Was I scared that day when I first went to school. But I wasnft the only one. For that same day, on that same yesterday, several other seniors started with me. There were Nancy Billings, Sherry Boyles, joe Green, Elizabeth Howe, Mary Carol Leonard, Bobbie Taylor, and Nellie Gregory at Washington. Ecl Morton, Don Braden, Mike Lowrey, Peggy Miller, Don Peak, Valton Corley, and Amanda Yates at Cameron. Remem- ber how at Cameron we had to lie down on our little pallets everyday after lunch and rest our little eyes for 15 minutes. It seems the habit stayed with' some of us because some of us still sleep in class every day after lunch. I never did exactly understand just how Mrs. Haste and Mrs. Shives at Washington, and Mrs, Alexander and Mrs. Norman at Cameron ever taught us to read and write, but by the time the first term had come to a close we had learned enough to be pushed on into the second grade. Here we started the year with 15 boys and girls. joe Green and Nellie Gregory moved away and we gained Gene Williams from Enid, and Virginia Lowrance from Claramore. The beginning of the third grade we lost Valton Corley and gained Alfred Wynn from San Antonio, Mike Stephens from Tulsa, Ann Davis from Drake, Tommy Keller from Davis, and Nellie Gregory from California. In the third grade the boys began their ball playing career by learning to throw mud balls. After the third grade Mike Stephens moved to Skiatook. In the fourth grade we gained David Ballinger, Dennis Hill from Oklahoma C't ohnnie Pennington from Butler, Sam West from Dixon Heights and ly, I Amanda Yates, all at' Washington. At Cameron, joe Green came back from Phoenix, Arizona, jack Kinney moved here from Claramore, Ed Morton came back from Illinois, and Pat Lowrance from Oklahoma City. We thought surely by now that Bobbie Taylor would be a lady boxer be- cause in the fourth grade she beat up David Ballinger and made himacry. In the fifth grade Washington gained Eva Suther from Daugherty, and Cameron gained Sue Bennett from Mill Creek, Valton Corley came back from New York, In the fifth grade after the fight between Bobbie Taylor and David Ballinger and a few other ones like that, the boys and girls couldn't play together. The girls had to play at one end of the school ground and the boys at the other end. In the sixth grade Eddie Morton moved over to Washington. We gained Barbara Richburg from Gainesville, Texas and Mary Yarberry from DeKalb, Texas, Max Riffe from Valley View, and Mike Stephens returned from Skia- took. There was quite a bit of conflict between Cameron and Washiiigton because of the football games we played against each other. They were really some excit- ing games. Why, if you were from Cameron you just didn't think of speaking to someone from Waslwington, and the same way at Washington. We used to wonder what it would be like to sit in high school classrooms and study high school subjects. Well, one day we found out. For one September morning in 1948, we found a bunch of us called seventh graders of-the Sulphur High School! As we think about it now, we must have been funny. We didn't know where to go or what to do. For a while we didn't even know how to study. It seemed very strange to recite in one room, and study in another one, and then go to another room for another class, This year we gained Emanuel Grissom from Houston, Texas, Helen Kaserman from Big Canyon, Dan Smith from Matoy, and Mary Watson from'Drake. In .the seventh grade Mrs. Fulton and Mr. Pate were our sponsors. XVe were divided into two groups and Mrs. Fulton's group won a half holiday for raising more money for the March of Dimes than any class in school. In the eighth we were beginning to learn that you had plenty of time to walk from class to class instead of run. Dick Burdett joined us from Lewiston, Alabama, and Nakita Hill from Prague, Oklahoma. This made a total of 36 of our present seniors in the eighth grade. Our eighth grade sponsors were Miss Pevehouse and Mr. Barton. The next year in the ninth grade Wanda Corbin came from Sentinel, Okla- homa, Annalois Gilbert from Nebo, Raymond Lee from Chigley, and Willa Dean Moss from Hickory. When we were freshmen the new auditorium was finished and we gave our first assembly program. Miss Vaughan and Mr. Barnes were our sponsors. Slowly but surely we were on our way to being Seniors. When we started as sophomores, of course, we thought we were very experienced, really, aside from our senior year, we believe the sophomore year was more exciting, than any other year. It was during our sophomore year that we began to think about what would be expected of us .when we were juniors and we began to plan how to raise money and what we would do when we were juniors. We gained only one student that year, he was james Williams from Wynnewood. We lost Mike Lowrev for eight weeks to Ada High, but he just couldn't stay away from dear old Sulphur High, so he returned at the end of eight weeks. Our sophomore year, Mrs. Duke and Mr. Norwood were our sponsors. So in the fall of 1952 we 'started our junior year. The whole high school would be watching us--for weren't we juniors? Didn't even the seniors look at us long, for they knew that some day we'd invite them to a banquet, that we'd usher at Commencement--that we'd help out at their Graduation. That year, as juniors and the smallest class in school, we won the football queen race with Bobbie Taylor as our queen, the F. F. A. race with Virginia Lowrance, the band queen race with Mary Yarberry, and Pat Lowrance as Rodeo Sweetheart. Our junior sponsors were Mrs. Norwood and Mrs. Donaghe. Donna Wade came to us that year from Byng and john Walker joined our class. Of course there was one event in the the junior year we'll never forget, and that was the junior and Senior Banquet, which will always live as one of the outstanding events in our school years. And here we are now, SENIORS! The year is almost over. High school days are almost a thing of the past. It won't be long now until we'll all parade up on the stage and get that little scroll called a diploma. But even when we seniors get that diploma, we'll never forget the events of our senior year. We had some outstanding additions to our class this year. Among them are Gwen Cowan from Gene Autry, Wayne Brady from Daugherty, and Lola Reece from Shawnee. Our excellent classy sponsors this year are Mr. Best and Mr. Merritt. A Again this year our class won the football queen race with Amanda Yates. And this year our school got its revenge against Midwest City by beating the undefeated Bombers 19-15. We are very proud of our senior class's contri- bution to the Bulldog Team. We have 54 seniors in our class and we graduate in '54, One way you can always tell a senior is by the El Torador song. Our senior class is the first class to go from the 7th to the 12th in the new high school building and we have enjoyed every minute of it. But soon our high school days will be a memory, and as we think of the days we spent in school, in our dreams, and with our memories, we'll always keep that date-- a date we made with yesterday. Signed, ' THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1954 CLASS PROPI-IECY The Senior Class of '54 known as The Gangf' couldnt stand to be parted. So they all boarded a ship ---'-A-- destination was Shangri-La, the island where people never grow old. Wfhen they arrived everyone began to donate his unusual talents to make a perfect island. The first project was the All Weather Gangway Turnpike, from the north end to the south end of Shangri-La. It was completed in two days. The toll for the entire trip is only 555 per car and 5510 per passenger. The engineering feat is a personal triumph for Allen Boyd, who did the planning, the surveying, and all the work. The collector at the north gate is' Wayne Brady who is trying to support his family of 12. The collector at the south gate is LaDonna Maas. She is saving money to invest in a 5 and 10c store. Exclusive concession rights for motels and restaurants along the turnpike have been awarded to Nancy Billings and Ann Davis. One of the chief interests of the islanders is centered around a little gadget patented by Mike Stephens to be known as the Control Your Own Weather. It consists of a dial with the words, Rain, Snow, Hail, Warm, Fair, Cloudy, Cooler, and Frost. When the device is purchased it is set for the area which it is to control. Our business part of Shangri-La was soon completed under the supervision of Tommy Keller, mayor of the island. Since food is essential to the daily lives of the islanders, Sam West built his famous Super-market, known as 'What Have You Got In Your Sack ? The Shangri-La Hotel built by Don Braden was the center of attraction. The hotel has its own smoking room, swimming pool, and golf course. After a weeks' search for a desk clerk, Don finally decided upon a very reliable girl, Mary Watson. ' Mary Carol Leonard, a very talented music student in high school, has finally reached her goal in life, The island's best and only piano tuner. If at any time through the day or night you need a taxi, you will find james Williams standing on the corner calling Taxi, Taxi, 5955 Everyone on the island is always well-dressed from Nakita Hill's dress shop, now world known for it's gownless evening straps, Nellie Gregory has a very cute Tiny Tot Shop for the kiddies. john Walker, principal of Shangrila High School, is very lenient with the students, You just punch the time clock as you come in the door and go to school six days a week for ten hours each day. The instructors are required to have at least six years of college and are paid 3550 a day. With these requirements it wasn't hard for us get instructors. We were fortunate to have Emanuel Gris- som, voice teacher, johnnie Pennington, history teacher, Dick Burdett, speech teacher, Eva Suther, librarian, and Bobbie Taylor, nurse and truant officer. It doesn't make much difference to Max Riffe whether he works all the time or not. just so he has enough money to buy candy and flowers for his many girl friends. The people of Shangri-La are very proud of their residential section, Two of the most beautiful homes are owned by Gwen Cowan and Lola Reece. The church is located in the center of this area so it will be handy for everyone. The pastor of the church is Dennis Hill. - Elizabeth Howe, who has followed in her parents' footsteps in the 'business world, is now sole owner of the Salvage Yard. She goes around each morning dusting the hub-caps. Marilyn I-lodge, champion typist in high school has been appointed sec- retary to the mayor of Shangri-La. ' ' Jim Hickman, is the proud owner of Hick'man's' Funeral Home. It is furnished with the newest and most modern embalming equipment. Annalois Gilbert has a fashionable beauty salon.- She makes most of her profit on her line of men's toupees. A jet airplane service between the United States and Shangri-La has just been announced by Boeing Airlines. At present the service is experimental, and the only pilot is David Ballinger and the only stewardess is Pat Lowrance. If this flight proves popular, more extensive service is planned for the future. Willa Dean Moss has already volunteered to take the first trip on the jet back to the States to see Loye. Mike Lowrey, industrialist and movie producer, has sold out his holdings in 4-D pictures corporation for more than four million dollars. He plans now to devote his time and his fortune to the development of interplanetary space ships. He already has contracts for space ships to make trips to the moon where he plans to operate outdoor theaters. Frank Sass has a donkey farm located about six miles north on the Senior Gangway Turnpike. Helen Kaserman, a very ambitious person, has not been successful as yet in establishing her business, due to the child labor law, not permitting children to work. There is always plenty of entertainment in Shangri-La. On Sunday after- noons, everyone goes to the zoo to watch Sue Bennett perform with her trained squirrels. Saturday night is a good night for the movies. Now showing is The Dollie Sisters starring Pattie Roberts and Mary Helen Owens. On Friday nights everyone stays home and watches Peggy Miller, known as Perilous Peggy, and Amanda Yates, known as Amazing Amanda, in the wrestling matches on T. V. Between matches Alfred Wynn Advertises the lotion that gives you that natural sun-tan look. The Gypsy Tea Room is a place where everyone always feels welcome. To meet you at the door and also entertain you on his violin is The Little Old Man , jackie Kinney. It also features a very good floor show starring Wanda Corbin. joe Green, the famous rodeo producer, produces the largest rodeo found anywhere, the Madison Round Pasture. The entry fee in only 35200 per person. During the rodeo season Sherry Boyles, the hefty blacksmith gets all her busi- ness. She is noted for her remarkable speed. Virginia Lowrance has finally succeeded in her dancing career. She now has her own dance studio known as the Swinging E-N-D Studio. Virginia has some very talented students, one of whom is Dan Smith. He is taking 'ballet lessons to improve his muscle co-ordination. Raymond Lee, another out- standing tap student, is still trying to persuade Virginia that her career isn't everything. The island is always well protected with the 699th division of the National Guard. The commanding officer is Gene Williams and his most heroic sergeant, Valton Corley. Don Peak is now taking a correspondence course from O. U. back in the States to become a detective just like joe Friday. Dr. Eddie Morton is in the process of writing a series of articles on Why Football Coaches Encourage Their Players to Smoke. Barbara Richburg, who is in the dairy business, has recently broken all previous records. She now milks 500 head of cows, bare-handed, each morning at 5 a. m. She-'s really a whizz. She doesn't have to milk at night. When Barbara milks them, they stay milked. Mary Yarberry, after appearing in a high school production of Three on a Bench , has been signed to a contract by the Shangri-La T. V. Network, and has originated a new type of program called Watch My Line. She models native sarongs.
