Red set my life at a pin's fee RAYMOND LA RUE SHULTZ PAST PRE SIDENTS lass History We entered the portals of Sullivan Highland High on September 12, 1955 as a group of 24 freshmen, eager to take advantage of all opportunities. Our class officers were Ronald Borick, president, Frank Gavitt, vice president, Ramona Phillips, secretary, Floye Myers, treasurer. Like those before us, we went through the ordeal of learning new routines under the eagle eyes of the upperclassmen and the earnest guidance of the faculty. After a few weeks, we became adapted to the rules of the school and to the fact that our progress dur- ing the coming four years would be equal to efforts which we would put forth. During the year, the new part of the building was finished and we moved into the newly equipped commercial room, which remained our homeroom for the remainder of our high school days. We shall never forget some of the pleasant experiences of our freshman year, outstanding might be, the classic day the freshman girls were initiated into the Future Homemakers of America. They were a sight as they donned their bluejeans inside-out, their strings of carrot and celery beads, and their tin pan hats. Then too, we were very lucky to have several boys interested in athletics, and as it happened, to make a sub- stantial contribution to the athletic program all through 'schoo1. Frank Gavitt made the varsity team in our freshman year. We ended our ninth year with a very pleasant trip to Rolling Green Park. On September 5, 1956, we became Silly sophomores, and what a happy year it turned out to be. Harry J. Gobora, was our new homeroom teacher and incidentally remained in that capacity for the rest of our high school days. Our class officers were Edward Houseknecht, president, Floye Myers, vice presidentg Connie Phillips, secretary, Ronald Schloyer, treasurer. We held a sock dance, and used socks as our decorations. Also during our sophomore year, we ordered our class rings. How fast time went! Soon 'it was September 4, 1957 and we became juniors. xwhat a magical title it was, and how wonderful it felt to be among the upperclassmen. Our class officers were Franklin Gavitt, presidentg Ronald Schloyer, vice president, Beverly Steinruck, secretary, Ronald Borick, treasurer. After a long period of anxious waiting, our class rings finally arrived and be- came the proud possession of each owner. Then came an all important event of our high school days, the Prom. Even though our decorating got off to a hectic start when Robert Eberlin backed a truck into a post in front of the school despite Mr. Gobora's frantic cries of Stop, stop, and the question whether to twist or not to twist the crepe paper caused concern, and John Meehan's motor used to control the flow of water in the Fountain of Youth, failed to work properly until the day following the Prom, the affair was very successful. A large crowd attended and their compliments, particularly conceming the appear- ance of the auditorium, more than compensated for the many hours spent in decorating and carrying out details for a successful prom. Soon it was September 3, 1958, our biggest year of all. The officers re- mained the same as those of the previous year with the exception of secretary, to which position the class voted Belva Phillips. ln a few weeks we started work on the yearbook. The generous response of patrons and the faithful efforts of our class members and advisor made possible the publication of the 1959 an- nual, Libros De Memorias. In the fall, several of the seniors played in the baseball league and helped win for Sullivan Highland, the baseball champion- ship. On November 21, we had our first sock dance of the year, which proved to be fun for everyone. As we drifted into winter, we also drifted into the basketball season. Again several of the seniors expended time and energy and helped to bring both teams of our school in the top half of the league standingg and had fate been more co- operative, our varsity would have taken first place since we lost three games by one or two points only. Two of our seniors, Franklin Gavitt and James Toothaker received the honor of being named All-Stars. At the close of the basketball season, we held our second sock dance February 27, and soon started play prac- tice. Our play, Who Wouldn't be Crazy, was under the untiring direction of John A. Powers. We were as busy as bees , and to apply some vocabulary we obtained during our high school training, we were not only busy, but assiduously and sedulously occupied in our metier. After presenting our play we began preparing for our commencement pro- gram, the theme of which was World Peace. We selected We will find a way, or make one, as the class motto, the red rose as the class flower, and blue and white as the class colors. Although our enrollment shifted slightly dur- ing our four years of high, we had twenty-three members to receive their diplomas Commencement, May 29, 1959, the same number as entered the class in our freshman year. On June 2, we were on our way to Washington. lt was time for fun and relaxation before entering into the more serious roles in life. Class W ill We, the class of 1959, of the Sullivan Highland School, Town of Sones- town, County of Sullivan, State of Pennsylvania, being of sound mind, clear conscience, and upright heart do hereby establish -this our last will and testa- ment, Since our class has always been bountifully blessed with the better things of life, we feel it is our duty to leave some of these blessings to the unfortunate underclassmen who are to follow. Article l With Mr. Gobora, our class advisor, we leave the sincere hope that never again may he be tormented with such a class of devilish individuals and that the remainder of his days ll I school teacher may be spent in the quietness of his classroom. Article II To the Junior Class, we bequeath our tricks and trade marks. We leave them with the hope that some day, after years of concentrated effort, they may approach the greatness of the class of fifty-nine. Article lll We leave the Sophomores our stately appearance, and one volume of 1-low to Become a Senior in Six Easy Years. Article IV To our beloved custodian and friend, Mr. William St. Clair, we leave our deepest gratitude and appreciation for his kind consideration and care given unselfishly through our six years in S. H. H. S. Article V We, after most careful consideration, find it fitting to leave to the faculty, with no partiality shown, some of our knowledge in excess of our needs. It is our most sincere hope that they pass it on to future generations in the same spirit in which it is given. Article Vl To Mr. Worthington, our principal, we leave our cluttered lockers, all spare pencils, erasers, and rules, all text books, especially, Problems of Democracy and American History, and what is left of our ambition. We feel sure that he will care for these cherished possessions in the best manner possible. Article Vll The members of the class of fifty-nine, being of an unselfish nature, find it fitting and proper to honor certain undergraduates with the following in- dividual bequests given in a gracious, sincere, and honorable manner, CAROL ANDREWS wills her yearning of the Navy to Miss Saxer. JAMES BEAVER wills his fondness of Bart and Bret Maverick to Coach Peters. RONALD BORICK wills his longing of Laporte to Susan Shaffer. JOHN CAIN wills his high-top shoes to anyone wanting dry feet. ROBERT EBERLIN wills his admiration of Popeye to all spinach lovers. JANE FERRELL wills her love for Jerry Lee Lewis to Mr. Worthington. FRANK GAVITT wills his jump shot to anyone on the junior high basketball team. MERRI GOLDER wills her talent to write short stories to Pinky Cain. EDWARD HOUSEKNECHT wills his typing abilities to John Kiess. RICHARD KEELER wills his silent manner to Winifred Ehrhart. JOHN MEEHAN wills his height to John Gregory.
