Remember how we used to solve some of those more diffi- cult problems, such as 2-l-2:4. First Mrs. Fieser, Mrs. Van Ness, or Miss Straka would teach us to do the problem algrbraically, The problem would look like this: Let a:2 LGT Let c:4 Therefore a+b:c or 2-9214. Progressing rapidly in knowledge with the aid of such patient teachers as Miss Mclvain, Mrs. East, and Miss l-lanson, we were amazed to discover that we could solve the same puzz- ler geometrically and later trigonometrically as follows, 2-l-2:4 Let side a:2 Let side b:2 Let side c:4 By the Pythagorean theorom we know c2:a2-l-b2. Substi- tuting we have: l6:8J,-8. We know that each of the sides are eqaul to the square root of their square. This taking the square roots of the respective square we come to the astounding con- clusion that 2-l-2:4. Page ll

ommerciaf fizbelaarfmenf ,QL l STANDING: Mrs. Kustner, Miss Herman. SEATED: Miss Kovitz, Mrs. Spooner, Mrs. Huck, Miss Wegat, Mrs. Walser. We remember the times we have stood outside ot a com- mercial room door listening in ecstasy to the click-clack ot the typewriters, and astonishingly witnessing the rapidity with which the business world's future secretaries take dictation. So it was with great expectancy and jest that we equipped ourselves with a shorthand notebook, sharpened pencil, clipped nails and signed up for stenography. Then things began to happen! We were shown that we were not all thumbs and we soon had the touch system mastered. We were taught a new system ot hieroglypics invented by a man called Pitman. Then we combined our shorthand and typing in a course of tran- scription. Besides all these things, we learned on the side that the first ones in the room acquired the precious new Royals and Underwoods. Then with what we thought was a knowledge ot math- ematics, we undertook bookkeeping. Here we not only learned the technique ot keeping books but had a review of addition and subtraction as well. ln the meantime we were also getting a general outlook on the business world in elementary business training. ln case we ever have the chance ot becoming a big business executive, we were able to prepare ourselves with commercial geography and commercal law. J aff ll , 5 J fe 5 cience Do you hear the call of test tubes, microscopes, and flasks plus the smell of experiments? Are you long- ing to disect a frog or make a bug collection? l-lave you always wonder- e d about chromosomes, atomic weights, vibrations, or the inside story of astronomy? Well, after a one year course of general science which treats all subjects from amoe- bae to elephants, you can engage in the above activities. For aspiring scientists there is the fascination of a laboratory and the thrill of conducting their own experiments in chemistry. Other courses that are offered in the science department are physics, chemistry, and biology. More than ever before, enroll- ment in the science department has been exceedingly high. lt is no wonder, however, because of the important part science is playing in the world today. By preparing our- selves as fully as we can in the field of science, we are making ourselves more fully equipped to become the best citizens of tomorrow.
