Acting upon constitutional procedure, two delegates were elected from each division room, which group elected its officers. Heading the Senate as president, in the fall semester, was Fred Ross. Charles Barber was elected vice presi- dent, Shirley Harder, secretary, jeane Gilmore, treasurer, and Dorrie Kamerer, social chairman. james McHenry was appointed sergeant-at-arms, and Vivian Nelson was made clerk. With the coming of the spring term, a new Senate was elected, with many of the former Senators retaining membership in the group. Byram Reed was elected president, Bill Winberg, vice president, Dorrie Kammerer, secretary, Lee Gluckma-n, treasurer, and George Kane, social chairman. The position of sergeant-at-arms was held by Ed Bentley, and that of clerk by Catherine Cryer. During the past year the Sullivan Senate has done much towards improving and maintaining order and cleanliness in the cafeteria. To the Senate also goes credit for the series of afternoon dances held in the gym, which affairs tended to further school spirit and also created a fund for athletics in the school. The many clean-up committees of Sullivan, headed by Mildred Wirick, chairman, and Maxine Dalies and Robert MacDonald, dele- gates, coordinated their efforts with the downtown league in a city-wide campaign to make Chicago a lovely place for spring tulips and crocuses. The social committee, with George Kane and Dorrie Kammerer as co-chairmen, supervised dances, moving pictures, and assemblies to further the Clean-up, Paint-up and Plant-up spirit in Rogers Park. Mildred Wirick, chairman of the publicity committee, with Roosevelt Rappaport, Robert Gluckman, Dorothy Seiden, and Betty Boling, distributed letters to the Rogers Park merchants, soliciting their co-operation in this civic drive to beautify Chicago. Edward Fraser, chairman of the report-book committee, compiled material submitted from each committee into a large book. The cover was designed by Evelyn Samuelson, and Lee Gluckman contributed art work for the section pages. This book was sent to Washington, withbooks from each of the schools in Chicago, in illustration of the campaign carried on in this city. Other committee heads whose efforts have been represented in the clean-up program are Robert McCord, financial chairman, Harry Leave, grammar school chairman, Lulu Belle Clarke, newspaper chairman, Byram Reed, Senate chairman, Saul Salka, club chairman, Martin Metal, poster chairman, Robert Thiel, essay chairman, Bailey John- son, oratorical chairman, Marion Conway, school interests chairman, Jack Lavin, radio chairman, and Bill Nelson, scientific chairman. Martin Metal was selected to create the window display for the Chicago Public Library. Page 5 9 , 1 , 'x 1 1 1 ' K x Q w r. ,k-.. .. Musi- cians are recognized and accorded their due praise in the Sullivan orchestra, which is under the direction of Miss Winifred E. Sheel. Composed of forty-three pupils, it meets daily in Room 139. The Glee Clubs furnish an incentive Whose shadow is projected far beyond the high school life. Their purpose is to increase interest in the interpretation and enjoyment of classic and modern music. A Boys' Glee Club and a Girls' Glee Club are active at Sullivan. Edward Ruff is president of the boys' organization, Melvin Golden, vice presi- ident, Burton Sokolsky, recording secretary, and Robert Mac Dole, treasurer. Miss Helen Ford directs the group. Officers of the Girls' Glee Club include Sylvia Lipa, president, Marie Ryberg, secretary, and Bonita Ellman, treasurer. Gertrude Brown is accompanist, and Miss Teresa F. Sloan is faculty sponsor of the Girls' Glee club. The senior chorus, directed by Miss Winifred E. Sheel sings a group of songs for commencement. Miss Sheel also directs the mixed chorus, a group of juniors and seniors. L ,e a 1 ' H - d a 4 gawk-is - I ' QMXJN X X Wx Boys' Athletics A year ago last September Sullivan attained seniority as a high school, and with it came all of the glamour of the athletic field. Excitement, thrills, and interest entered the halls of the building. This year one of the hardest lighting football squads in the city league represented Sullivan under the able leadership of Ralph Margolis. This team didn't have a great deal of good fortune, but it was its first year, and the experts mutually agreed that wlieh next year arrives and with the same fighting spirit prevailing the Blue and Gold will march to new and greater heights. J The Tiger basketball squad, filled with the same fight, had Lady Luck smile upon them to a somewhat greater extent than the gridders did. They ended their year with a fifth place in the north section in the heavyweight division, and the lightweights, who are all expected to return next year, climbed slowly but surely into the limelight toward the end of the year. Lee Gluckman captured third place in the city wrestling meet, being the only Sulli- van representative. A wrestling team was formed, however, from intra-mural competi- tion. Sullivan's swimming team was one of the highlights of the year. Displaying that indomitable Tiger spirit, it marched to triumph after triumph, finally accomplishing the impossible . . . the defeat of the Blue and Gold's traditional enemy--Senn High. Herb Wolfson, Walfrid Williamson, Bob Richardson, Stan Berg, and a new star, Bob Anis, along with a list of names too numerous to mention, starred again and again. Golf, tennis, and skating all had their share of the sporting limelight during the year, teams representing the Blue and Gold in each of these sports. With Clarence Lineberger as faculty sponsor, the Writeris Guild of Sullivan was organized, and all those who had aspira- tions toward writing and literature were invited to become members. Herbert Lyon, the managing editor of the Selzfiuel, was elected president of the clubg Robert Thiel, vice-president, and Betty Boling, secretary. Meetings are held every other week, at which times members read their own manuscripts and constructive criticism is offered by the group. Qccasionally one of the members delivers a lecture on a literary subject or discusses instructions on the various types of writing. Organized in the middle of 1935, The Writers, Guild looks forward to a future wherein it will become an established and respected institution at Sullivan. It was established in the fall of 1934-35, with Miss Flavilla Normington' as faculty adviser. The club Consisting, in the fall, of twenty-live members, has grown so that it now counts over one hundred students in its membership. It has become, in one semester, one of the largest organizations in the school. Much of the credit for the development of this organization belongs to Bernard Baum and Byron C. Miller. The latter, after one semseter as chairman, became the club's leading officer again in the spring semester of 1935. Still in embryo, the officers have been elected and tentative plans have been made for the club meetings. Individual works of art, as well as exhibitions, will be reviewed by the members with this goal in mind-constructive criticism of the artist's work and his success in por- traying his objective. The club hopes to sponsor interesting and educational trips to Chicago's various museums of art and also to artists' studios. Personal contact with the artist and his work-a-day life should prove illuminating as well as interesting. The ultimate success of the club is wholly dependent upon the support of present members and recruits. Page 101 ,- 'e . -' 1- .
