Twelve years filled with laughter, tears, gaiety, and disappointment. But they were short years that went swiftly. The Class of 1956 still re- members that memorable day when they dragged their hesitant feet up that long, long hall to their first grade classroom. These seniors remem- ber the many times they stood in the corner, played hop-scotch on the playground, stole kisses from their girl friends, and acquired bloody noses from fights. The day that they arrived at the high school as green seventh graders will always be avivid recollection to this class. The next six years brought many new activities, sports, teachers, and friends. Looking back through the years brings a multitude of scenes back to the minds of the Class of 1956. From these scenes they have achieved the final goal--graduation. Now they will go out into a world where hatred, war, and prejudice exist. This is the world they've known since birth. ACTIVITIE What wouldahigh school be without some di- version from the routine of the classroom? At SullivanHighSchool this diversion takes shape in the form of various activities that range from the dignified Beta Club to the fun-loving FTA. Each year the school calendar is almost en- tirely filled with club meetings. Along with the regular scheduled meetings there are many SPEClALactivities--the FHA Chicken Spaghetti Supper, the Student Council Carnival, the GAA Basketball Tourney, the Hi-Y Bean Supper, the Beta Club Induction. Many friends are made in these clubs --friends that will never be forgotten. A senior gets to know a freshman, and a junior starts to date a sophomore from an introduction in some organization. The clubs are one of the reasons why SHS students dread to graduate. They hate to leave all the memorable experiences ofmeeting together at night or during the activi- ty period. But they gain a great deal from being apart of the Sullivan extra-curricular activities that will benefit them for many, many yez come. 1 , ,, xx 1, .5-gfff? f ,Ag 1 f F , i 1 .K - ,.. l rn gli- ,v ' 'R Q get My ' if 1' 'A s . y, . 5 -.-ff Lifxi. fl , nr A by S K V I . 1 ,Q if 4- 'f ' Q Y P 'T X' H -' f i . Unfortunately the alumni are pushed into the background, for this is the high school's big day. November ll, 1955, was indeed an outstanding event for Sullivan High School students. A victorious football game a lovely queen and her court, and never-to-be-forgotten dance. All who participated have many memories. But the Class of 1956 ended the wonderful day a little wistfully, for next year they will be alumni. 5 22 7 tn 'F rr xx Q,tl '1 j5 r : ' 'A' . LANG PLUMBING 81 HEATING BRANSTETTERS GROCERY SULLIVAN HIGH SCHOCL BAND The Sullivan High School Marching Band started practice immediately after schoolbeganinSeptember,1955. They worked extra hard to be in shape for the firstfootball game. From that football game, when The Star-Spangled Banner filled the air, until they played Pomp and Circumstanceu at commencement, the band had given the high school students and the town's people reason to be proud of them. Along with playing at all basketball and football games, attending contests, and giving concerts, the band completed an already full year by numerous mon- ey-making projects. These included the annual magazine subscription sale, a Pancake Festival, and a sale of chocolate candy bars. For the band all the events were successful from a monetary and publicity standpoint. These three big money-making projects brought the band enough money to handle the finances on their annual trip at the end of the year--a perfect end to a busy, exciting year for the Sullivan High School Marching Band. The Sullivan Band, attired in their new pur- ple and gold uniforms, posed for a photo in concert formation. Mr. Wilfred Perigio, con- trary to custom, placed himself at the rear of the band. lt was through his efforts that the band succeeded in its many activities. ,gl -if dent. GEORGE PEABODY The faculty at Sullivan High School is paying off this debt very unselfishly, for they realize that the youth of today is the world of tomorrow. They are preparing the SHS students for the happiness, heartbreak, glory, and shame they will meet upon taking places in the world. When they first come in contact with their teachers, the students are young and pliable. It is the faculty'sjob to guide these impressionable minds in the right direction-complex knowledge, respect for others, integrity, and service to their country. This is a hard job and one wrong word, one wrong action can destroy everything good in such an immature person. But the right word, the right action can make a teen-ager mature enough to face the problems of taking over the reins of a democratic government. ls the faculty of Sullivan High School success- ful in creating leaders ? The outstandingachieve- ments of our alumni prove that they are V BOARD OF EDUCATION Without compensation these three prominent men of Sullivan gave uns elfis hly of their time in the interest of the smooth operation of the school. As representatives of the taxpayers, Dr. C.E. Fisher, President, Dr. J.H. Crowder, Sec- retary, and Mr. Wendell Tennis, Treasurer, were appointed to Sul- livan's Board of Education. il SUPERINTENDENT PhilN. Eskevv, Sulliv.in's well- knovvn Superintendent of Schools, and his secretary, Mrs. Mary Louise liempleton, have a tre- mendous task in the functioning of the entire school system. Through this efficient office go finances, purchasing, yearly calendar, and school policies. 1 .sic a L- my PRINCIPAL Through the office of the high school principal went a great deal of unrewarded work. Few high schools can boast such a great man and administrator as can Sullivan. During the year Mr. H.C. Gilmore and his secretary, Alice Medsker, kept the school running smoothly. SHS owes a debt of graditude to these two hard-working people. n redb This page spo so y DUDLEY CHEVROLET SALES FACULTY ROBLRI FORD The Jumor class play drrcctor con ducts thc junror Lnglrsh and Spanrsh classes 1 nv PAUL ASBURY d assrsrant prlnc rpal Dcanof boys 111 frlls hrs already busy day by leach ral studres , F rug soc by NX MRS LLLEN GROSS rls physrcal edu -r Handles allthe gl atron classes and sponsors the grrls c rntramural sports DALE BILLMAN S u l lrv a n s gurdance counselor aches the more advanced scrence urs hernrstry es physrcs and c RUSS RUTH HINKLII the underclassmen for P r e p a r e s hrgher mathemaucs by teachrng them general math and algebra I I 4 1 ' wrLL1AM BOLTON The assrsranr football coach guides through their study A ,, . Dictionary The dictionary's definition of underclassmen is a very cut-and-dried description of a very spirited group of people. At Sullivan High School the underclassmen play a large part in all the school's functions and its government. Sullivan is proud of the way this group contributes to the school's reputation by their athletes, musicians, yell-leaders, and Thespians. lt is hard to find another high school with such a well-balanced, impartial student body. The underclassmen yell for the seniors in sports, the seniors cheer on the underclassmen in their respective activities, and the entire group is proud when any underclass- man succeeds in any way. ln a few years these present underclassmen will look back on their years as freshmen, sophomores, andjuniors with wonderful memories and many, many laughs --- Green freshmen, silly sophomores, and jolly juniors---Yes, without this great stu- dent body, SHS would be devoid of a large per- centage of fun, pride, and tradition. Even before school starts, the boys are on the gridiron learning new plays, executing new techniques, and losing excess weight. From this training comes the glory of playing under the floodlights and bringing one more victory to the record of SHS. Before the thrill of the pigskin encounters are forgotten, basketball gets under way. Prac- tice, practice, practice, But the hard work and practice are forgotten when another win is chalked up for the Golden Arrows. Spring ar- rives and with it track and field meets. The cinder and sawdust events bring forth individual challenge. Competitive spirit and good sports- manship make good teams, and these virtues rate high in Sullivan athletes. From this sports 'L' their glory and heartbreak, the BOYS of SL High School become MEN. . 11 4 1 ' 1 1 ff 5 H ii-3' rg?
