I ,f , 2? lv . ' AIQIIQVY' w I I I I PRESENTATION UFIIFIE AT SULLIVAN HIIEII SEHDIIIL LIFE AT SULLIVAN H. S., SULLIVAN, IND What a dull lite this would be if it weren't for its illustrationsl just look at what the candid camera man snapped in only one day, His first shot is of Bill Dickerson and Mary Frances Hankins comparing their records of a basketball game according to their magic slate score pads . . , Next, he spies the junior class officers discus- sing plans for pencil sales . . , Here is a geometrical illustration. Is Bob Miller agreeing or disagreeing? IN .I INNO Click! Pardon the interruption, please. Better wake up, Don, or you'll miss one of those handy P. A. system announcements . . . Our camera man surprises this sociable bunch chatting on the steps during the S period . . . and on up the hall Betty Bevis, Bill Lindley, Betty Sinclair, and Ruth Mc- Crocklin are likewise employed . . . In room 303 he catches the girls' glee club in action . . . Randell Webb and Enoch Hadar are the local Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. AS SE Our camera man now goes to Sport- land Field, where the Sullivan-Linton Armistice Day game is in progress . . . Cbserve the bench warmers and facul- ty, among whom we note Branstetter of the purse strings, Gilmore, chilly but cheerful, Plew, Melbourne, and Robi- son . , . The eternal mystery--What do they say in a huddle? The look of de- termination on the faces indicates that the talk does not run toward styles in hair cuts . . . The marching band takes the field, EN BY THE SENIOR CLASS Becky and Sue look right proud ol themselves, Why not? They're wear- ing handsome new outfits . . . Big Chief Lockridge must have been great help in the hot dog stand, but he took time out to pose.. .Marjorie and Mary do their bit for Blue Tri's sweet charity and dispense refreshments to the crowd of rooters . . . This section of the bleachers reveals students, Norma johnson and Marjorie Brodie, alumni, Winterbottom and Harris, and the townspeople who always follow the teams. 3 ill ,,38,, We submut to you the V938 edutuon of the Saga We started wuth hugh hopes to make our Saga the best un the hustory of Sulluyan Hugh School Most of our orugunal udeas were as usual too expensuve For the most part we followed the plan laud out by the en gravers lt has been our aum to pucture the students of Sulluvan Hugh School not dressed up to pose for the publuc but un theur dauly round ot actuvutues as students Takung our trued to umutate some of uts features It was necessary to rause the sellung pruce ot the book to meet rusung costs ot engravung and pruntung To thus the student body responded cheerfully Much of the work of producung cven such a small annual as ours does not snow un the funushed product We can only hope that the value of the l93S Saga wull un rease wuth the years The Staff theme from the magazine, Life, we have J c c - ' , One of the best sellers of the past few years has been Walter Putlaun s Lute Beguns at Forty Not beung forty lor half of utl not even havung read the book we are per haps umpertunent to mentuon ut Whule mud dle aged men and women have doubtless taken hope from the book we are of the opunuon that hugh school not only prepares for lufe but hugh school us Iufe Remember Ing certaun days we can scarcely restraun a And wotta lufe That phrase l.ufe Beguns at Forty has had too much publucuty It s truth Youth must have uts flung Never theless the l938 streamluned model of Amerucan Youth funds opportunutues for achuevement even before the age of twenty We have not once needed the proof The square on the hypotenuse us equal but ut s a lot of fun knowung ut now ln other words we re not loungung through our teens WG luve lufe Flow EI:Il'l El Vl I 0 DJ . , . u . S ' LLN 6lEE CLUB Life is a song for thirty-one melody-minded girls, and a harmonious life it is. This organization has long been a sugar-coated pill to sweeten the disposition of hard-working pupils. When the soft strains of Sweet Sue echo through the halls, all geometry problems and government books are laid aside and music reigns supreme. Miss lean Cox directs their notes and sees that none go astray. Their motto: no flat notes, their goal: higher notes, their theme: happy notes for happy people, their aim in life: bank notes. These songsters do much to maintain the cultural side of life in Sullivan High School, both in the fine old songs and in the modern swing tunes. DRUM CORPS With flying skirts and the sound of drums, the marching corps of S. l-l, S. comes into sight, as the photographer and the staff risk their necks to shoot the arrow formation from a second story window. Leading this group is a fancy stepper, Patty Hofmann. A call for attention, a lift of the arm, a shrill whistle, and they're off, as she leads them through in- tricate patterns and drills. We see them on the football field at the half, at the basketball games, and often at school activities. Under the direc- tion of Miss Bland these twenty-one girls have been stepping fast and furious, since their first appearance in l934. BASKETBALL Students and townspeople seldom glimpse the tiresome hours of prac- tice behind the smooth plays which they applaud with so great enthusi- asm, Coach Spike Kelly and Assistant Coach Wey could tell you that it is during these hours, rather than the actual playing time, that games are won or lost. Only by looking in on a daily practice session can the fans appreciate the effort and time spent by the coaches and boys to build a team that can put through a play with clock-like precision. And here the candid camera catches the spirit and concentration that have boosted Sullivan to a S. l. A, C. championship and added a gold basketball to the now bulging trophy case. BAND A clash of cymbals, a roar of drums, a toot on the tooters, and they're off! A merry march or a symphonic melody is the result. During the fourth period, the band melodies drift upstairs and all around. There is usually a crackle of static as the music of the drum corps, glee club, and wood shop blends with that of the band, but not for long. Next year the sound-proof walls of the new field house will keep the renditions a more profound secret than heretofore. Three bell-lyres and a set of tympani have been added to the band this year, A school without a band is like a body without a lung-there can't be LIFE.
