This year was no exception. Despite the cold, wet weather outside, things really got hot inside as the band warmed up for the dance. Students and faculty members danced to the music of Willey Boone. This great band set the pace for the rest of the evening and everyone who attended seemed to enjoy the dance . 32 33 1 Homecoming Week included many activities. During the week there was a hall-decorating contest among the various clubs. The co- winners were the Varsity Cheer- leaders and the Hiking Club. Then, of course, on Friday night came the crowning of Yvette Owens as Home- coming Queen and the dance that followed in the cafeteria. The rain on Homecoming Night dampened the half- time festivities but not the Patriot Spirit. The Student Council planned the half-time activities and practiced with the queen contestants. The contest- ants were nominated by and voted on by the student body. Julie Buchanan, escorted by Bruce Morton, was chosen the Freshman Queen. Alia Hamed, escorted by Robby Gillion, was picked as Sophomore Queen. Babette Cox, escorted by Scott Winchell received the honor of Junior Queen. Qur Homecom- ing Queen for 1976-77 was Yvette Qwens, escorted by James Rock. 36 4 IH r V Byg r 2r K:.;i Homecoming Week this year was very special. The Annual Staff planned the activities for each day of the week; these included: Crazy Hau and Sunglasses Day: Spook Day: Cowboy and Indian Day; Red, White, and Blue Day: and Farmer ' s Day. Elaborate decorations depicted a southern plantation concurring with the theme of Gone With the Wind . ’ ' Refreshments were prepared by the cafeteria and served by the teachers. Mid- night Madness played a variety of music while prom-goers danced late into the night. 41 Smiles Sometimes school can get pretty depressing but just seeing some- one smile can make all the dif- ference. 42 43 Miss Patriot Pageant 1976 Glamour, excitement, and a bit of nervousness was anticipated by each of the twenty-five girls who vied for the title, Miss Patriot 1976. Each girl in the pageant represented a different club. The girls were judged in three major categories: Sportswear, Talent, and Evening Gown. Sandy Nelson was chosen Miss Congeniality by the other girls in the pageant. Eve ryone was finally rewarded when Debbie Francisco was crowned Miss Patriot. 44 I j i 45 46 Patriot Productions Last spring, many hours of practice and hard work went into the production of the combined plays - The Mother” and A Visit to a Small Planet. Coach Lowe helped a cast of approximately twenty students give two outstanding performances and gain a lot of good experience, too. 47 I 48 49 Annual Sales This year the Annual Staff dem- onstrated a new and productive means of selling annuals. The One-Day-Merchandising program proved to be THE WAY to sell annuals. Annual sales soared. 50 I A Christmas Carol Students at East were very impressed by the Drama Club ' s production of Charles Dickens ' A Christmas Carol . The club members worked long , hard hours to bring us the enjoyable hour of Christmas spirit . 51 52 Mary Poppins On Saturday, March 5, members of the French classes combined their efforts to present a skit entitled Mary Poppins. The presentation was given at the third annual Foreign Language Festival held at East Tennessee State University. These students were thoroughly rewarded for their efforts when they came away with first place. Several schools from different parts of the state competed with them. This made their teacher, Mrs. Gaines, even more proud when they walked away with first place . 53 54 55 East High Patri-ettes 1976-1977 Sponsored by: Mrs. Prince Miss Bullock 56 Try-outs for the Patri-ette dance team were held this year at East and the following girls were chosen: Linda Lady Teresa Rogers Janet Boone Trina Tmmp Kim Cullop Debbie Grubb Joann Trivett Linda Arrowood Susan Rutledge Diane Dishner Connie Prince Mona Perry These girls worked hard during basketball season entertaining at our home games. Their dance routines are to popular music and their sponsors, Mrs. Prince and Miss Bullock, helped them to make their decisions. 57 true love? . . . your attention, please . . . hey, baby! . . . good morning, class . . . look mom, no fins! . . . ffiTirnrnn] 1 58 just taking a little nap . . . i ' m so happy ... it sure is cold inhere! . . .oh, really? . . . hiking is hard work, even for teachers . . . get fired up! . . . 59 60 61 mm y w i r Yl ' 1 mmi K - ' ' ■ h 1 VA n ‘ ■ -] 1 FRONT ROW: D. OUR POEM RENA MAINES LAURA DEMO BABETTE COX TERESA TOWNSEND JANE LEWIS You remember all the memories cheering left behind, As you take your uniform off for the very last time, It ' s been in your dreams for so very long. But you never realize that cheering ' s really gone. You feel like you ' ve missed a game , and a girl just took your place. But in a uni- form just like yours there ' s a permanent different face. And you keep waiting for that next game so you can finally do your cheers. Because you never realize it ' s the end of those cheer- leading years. 1 once watched a cheer- leader through a little girls eyes and a hero she seemed to me , And I dreamed a cheerleader just like her is exactly what I ' d be. It seemed like forever, but my dreams came true at last. It became my dreams, then my life, but 1 never realized that it now became my past. But now you ' re sitting in the stands and like looking through little girls eyes, You ' re wishing so much you were down there and you find yourself about to cry. Because you remember the great times in that uniform and when you took it off for the last time. And for the first time in your life you realize cheering ' s only memories left behind. by Sandy Nelson 105 . V. Cheerleaders LEFT TO RIGHT: R. Milhorn, K. Riffoy, L. Taylor, S. Wilson, P. I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuit, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement. I cannot deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil. I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so — for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and play ing square with those whose happiness depends upon me. I believe that rural America can and will hold true to tile best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task. The creed was written by E. M. Tiffany, and adopted at the 3rd National Convention of the FFA. Revised at the 38th Convention. 142 LEADERSHIP COOPERATION SCHOLARSHIP learning to do doing to learn CHARACTER 1 J • % AGBICDLTDIiE CITIZENSHIP l ' k earning to live I «A LIVING TO SERVE SERVICE PATRIOTISM THRIFT RECREATION m 143 Environ- mental Science Club Trying to keep people involved by protecting the environment in our surrounding area is what the Environmental Science Club is all about. Can ' t wait ' til gradua- tion though . . . it ' s gonna be great! I’ll cruise up front, grab that diploma, say thanks dude, and run. It’s too bad I don’t know where I’m running to. Before it was easy, follow the rest of the crowd and you were fine. 1 knew I could always find some one at a game , a party , a movie , or eating at Pizza Hut on Friday night. Only now it’s gonna be different, everyone for them- selves, trying to make it on their own. Lis- ten to this joke - letting graduation get to me after twelve years of being a hard guy. Oh, brother . . . yeah it’s time to make the scene in class . . . guess I might even miss that when it’s all over . 162 i Well, it’s graduation and I can ' t believe I ' m really here! In a few minutes it ' ll be my turn, they’ll call my name and I’ll walk up to receive my diploma , only . . . where do I go from there? I ' ve always had the security of the school routine and its activities, sur- rounded by friends I was so fainiliar with. Now we’ll all be going in separate directions and I wonder how long it will take before the memories that meant so much to me begin to fade, soon to be forgotten. After twelve years you ' d think I’d be ready to move on, only I feel like I’m leaving a pan of me behind. Maybe it’s good though, because I really have changed in the past three years that I’ve been here, learning from my mis- takes as well as others. Well, I’m next, it’ll all be over soon. But then I stop and think about it and you know, in a way I guess everything is really just beginning.
