777 Sponsor JKr ls)iffarcf JlTerecfit i RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD Mr. Willard Meredith, Vocational Teacher, has been named as one of twenty-six such instructors from the fifty states to receive the National Award of the Honorary American Farmer Degree. The award is based on outstanding achievements and leadership in the field of Vocational Agricul- ture and the FFA organization. He has coached Dairy and Soil National Judging teams, a State Star Farmer, State Dairy Award, two state public speaking teams, and many other agriculture and FFA awards. WOMACK ' S OLD FORT Approximately one mile west of East High School located on a hill by a spring stood the residence fort of Captain Jacob Womack, who served in Colonial and Revolutionary Wars. Built before 1774, it served to protect nearby settlers from Indian attacks. About 1785, Captain Womack moved farther west and the fort was abandoned. 132
