Will the day ' s journey take the whole long day? From morn to night, my friend. But is there for the night a resting-place? A roof for when the slow dark hours begin. May not the darkness hide it from my face? You cannot miss that inn. Shall I meet other wayfarers at night? Those who have gone before. Then must I knock, or call when just in sight? They will not keep you standing at that door. Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak? Of labor you shall find the sum. Will there be beds for me and all who seek? Yea, beds for all who come. They have worked diligently to bring to the students more meaningful educational ex- periences by introducing into the system new ideas, up-to-date facilities, and highly trained personnel conducive to better learning. It is with great pleasure that we the Patriots of East High School hereby dedicate this yearbook to the distinguished Board of Education of Sullivan County, Tennessee. 4 Das Jficjfi Dedicated On November 17, 1968, East High School was officially dedicated as an institution of learning. Mr. J. Craft Akard, Superintendent of Sullivan County Schools, presided over the ceremony and festivities of the afternoon. We were honored with the presence of Mr. Frank Erwin, Director of the University of Tennessee School of Planning Laboratory, who brought us greetings from the Tennessee State Department of Education. Mr. M. Nat Barnes, Chairman of the Board of Education, introduced Dr. D. P. Culp, Pres- ident of East Tennessee State University, who was the honored speaker. Charles Boling, President of the Student Body of East High School, accepted the building. Through such dedicated efforts may we continue to grow and prosper for years to come. 5 7. )ou cf ou Tlefn ' ieue ?? 6 7 .. . fU , ! Cox Assistant Superintendent Mr. Paul Boy Board Member Mr. Alonzo Vance Board Member Mr. Charles Johnson Board Member 12 Serving as Principal of East High School dur- ing the first year of consolidation has been both a privilege and a challenge— a privilege by pro- gressive minded county officials: the Superintend- ent, the Board of Education, the County Court, and other interested people— a privilege to have a well qualified faculty of enthusiastic and dedi- cated teachers and almost nine hundred fine young people from the eastern part of Sullivan County as students— a challenge to organize and promote a program to take full advantage of our facilities and to provide for each student the op- portunity to achieve to the highest level; to plan activities permitting and encouraging student par- ticipation and to develop unity, loyalty and school spirit within the student body. I believe we have much to be proud of and that this school year, for the most part, has been successful. This success has been made possible by the hard work of our faculty and by the co- operation, participation, and achievement of the great majority of the student body. This has been a year of much planning, organizing, and promoting. I trust we have established a sound basis for future activities— a basis we can build on and use as a guide to correct our mis- takes, strengthen our weaknesses and enrich our program. My deep appreciation is extended to every person who has contributed to the success of our school program this year. To the seniors, the graduating class of 1969, I express my sincere congratulations and very best wishes. I realize you started this school year with mixed emotions since consolidation was a new experience involving a new location, a new building and facilities, new teachers and new friends. Your adjustment to a new environment was rapid and remarkable, which indicates your ability to face new experiences and make the proper adjustments in the years that lie ahead. You have the honor of being the first class to graduate from East High School; we hope your efforts, determination and achievement will serve as an inspiration to all who follow. Route No. 3 BLUFF CITY, TENNESSEE 37618 KENNETH CARRIER Principal VAUGHN E. BREWER Assistant Principal Dear Seniors, One year is not enough time to establish a tradition rich in those things that make a school stand out in the minds of those who attend it. However, during our first year here at East High we have inaugurated a program which will develop into a tradition we will all be proud of. The first year in a new school is not an easy one; but you have met new friends, new teachers, and have shared in the opportunities that a school such as this can offer. We wish to express our thanks to you and to your spon- sors for the excellency of the work you have done here at East High and for the cooperation that you have given us. As you leave us, we hope you will take our best wishes. Sincerely, Secretaries We would like to take a moment to say a kind word of appreciation to our dedicated secretaries— Mrs. Bertie Jo Morrell and Mrs. Peggy Vance. The Debating Club gives each member an oppor- tunity to broaden his experiences through its varied activities. Debating is a valuable means of develop- ing the individual student and of training him to meet the problems of life. He learns to be thorough and accurate. He learns to analyze and to distinguish between the vital and the unimportant. He learns to think under pressure in a time of need and to make decisions quickly and accurately. The value of the training given by debate is be- yond question. It calls for special skills and abilities in thinking and in presenting one ' s thought to others; thus, the student becomes a more effective and articulate speaker. It is also an activity in which the student is given an opportunity to exercise the powers of leadership. The Debating Club is well worth the time and en- ergy each member spends because of the training he receives. President Vice-President . . . Secretary-Treasurer Reporter Sponsors Kristie Neeley . . Eisenhower in 1948, when he was President of Columbia Uni versity. To be a good American, is the most important job that will confront you. But essentially, it is nothing more than being a good member of your community, helping those who need help, striving for a sympathetic un- derstanding of those who oppose you, doing each day ' s job a little better than the previous day, placing the common good before personal profit. The American Republic was born to assure you the dignity and rights of the human individual. If the dignity and rights of your fellow man guide your daily conduct of life, you will be a good American. Congratulations and best wishes always. James Edwards President JAMES EDWARDS HUGH H.
