We even raise our gay hats with a flourish and Wave them on high, insisting in loud tones, Hail! Hail! Our betters! . We wish to assure them, sincerely and unselfishly, that we do appreciate them, that we are grateful for what they have done for us, that, in short, We admire, respect, and sometimes dare to love that inspiring band of famous characters, the faculty-our betters. From the beginning We have observed our faculty with some strange feeling akin to awe. We have found that they have cofoperated with us sympathetically and untiringly. And our awe has changed into unqualified admiration. There have been times when they were forced to remind us of their superior ability to meet the problems of the classroom -or of Life. But, even if our chins went high for a second, we realized quickly that our best friend is he who is an honest critic. As we continued to scrutinize our betters, our admiration became tinged and finally suffused with a spirit of good comradeship. At last We ceased to observe. We accepted them without reservations, and we have been very glad of our gamble. And when We come at last to express our sentiment regarding our faculty, we find that it is one of sincere admiration and love mixed slightly with tears and making finally a great, glad smile and Thank you with, tacked on the end, a fervent little prayer of gratitude for the excellence of Our Bettersf' -Zerilda E. Ross. 31 A Tribute I. There's a poem unwritten and a song unsung Much sweeter than ever was breathed, It's the poem, supreme in its being, that's sprung In our hearts to those who've bequeathed Us the priceless knowledge of all that is fair: A Truth, loyalty, duty, and hopeg . .y Joy, courage, work, faith, love, and prayer., II. . On reddish sands, our ships rest, longing for the sea, All ready we stand, fearing naught, ', ' We're guided by the moulders of ourtdestiriy. True knowledge that ne'er can be bought With sacks of gold and silver, orelen jewels of price, They've given us unselfishly, I And it cost them, too, a sacrifice. III. And the song that's in our hearts will forever grow 'Till that saddest chord is sounding . And we hear the strains of parting, sorrowful and low. Something deep within us bounding, Thankfulness and gratitude in a chorus rise: We bless Heaven for our Teachers- Friends, companions, counsellors wise! iCarol Hamlin 32 X X -:QQ Q-Q QWQ QQQ 5 Q : ,Hi Q Q QQQQ Q QQ' Q QQ-Q Q QQ 'QQ QQ Q QQ-Q Quai . Some find life fair, Some End it hooey, Many people care: But we don't, do we? 87 Invocation Blaze, thou messenger of hope That smoulders in the breasts of all. Stir us on to valiant deeds, Let us hear thy vibrant call. In some, thou art a steady glow Of unremitting conscience. Then A wayward spark will sometimes go To haunts unfrequented by men. Epherneral tongues of flame thou art To some, whose passions blaze and die With equal speed. In other hearts Thy light is steady-slow, not high. Red embers glow in the breasts of some, Burning with intense desire, Inflaming minds Whose tongues are dumb, Scorching with perpetual fire. And in a few, grey ashes mark The only trace of thy dim past. Nought remains, not one small spark, To point their place in a world so vast. -Dorothy Mignault 88 PY A Repast Postponed With a gasp of despair the little blonde bride hurried to the telephone to call the employment agency. Main 9752, please .... Hello, this is Mrs. Robert Wiggins speaking. How soon can you send me a competent cook? Her face showed dismay. Not before an hour?-Well, as soon as possible. Thank you. With a rueful eye, she hung up the receiver and gazed at her burned and blistered hands. So far, married life seemed to her only one trouble after another: burnt food, burnt fingers, and impudent maids. During the next hour, she ruined one batch of cookies, burned two fingers, shed several tears, and wished a dozen times that she had never left her mother, altho' Scout was a dear. A loud knock at the kitchen door disturbed her brooding, and she hastened to admit the fat, capable looking woman whom she knew to be the cook. Come in, she said, I guess you'll End everything in the pantry. You know, I'm having a bridge tea this afternoon, and I haven't even my husband's lunch. He comes home in half an hour. Young Mrs. Wiggins motioned the newcomer to take off her wraps, but her gesture passed unheeded. Clara Berry! cried the cook. The bride of two weeks raised her startled grey eyes to the plump, iolly face of the last employment, agency experiment. Why, Billie Mignault! What are you doing here? Getting experience, acknowledged the experiment. What? Yes, l'm running an Employment Bureau in Knoxville, and I decided to do a little investigating as to what servants often had to put up with. The same old Billie, laughed Clara Berry. But come in and tell me what you know about any other Sullinc-sites. The two walked into the cozy living-room, from whose windows one could see only vast areas of clouds, with houses and airplane hangars in the distance, and sat down for a good gossip about school days and school- mates. Fifteen minutes passed, twenty minutes passedg and finally, the whir of the airplane's wings in the front yard pierced the guilty conscience of the lady of the house. Oh, it's Robert, and no lunch! gasped Clara Berry. But, in an after thought, he won't mind: he's a good scout. Young Mr. Wiggins entered the room, and, after removing his helmet, tenderly greeted his wife, who blushingly emerged from his embrace with: ' Robert, this is the Billie Mignault you've heard me talk about so often. Billie, lvfr. Wiggins. She just flew up from Bristol a few minutes ago. Now, what did you say Ann is doing? she asked abruptly. She's running a dairy farm in Ohio, and Melzena is working on a translation of Dorothy Parker's poems into Latin and Scandinavian. Not really! But what is Betsy doing? Oh, she's kept busy mopping up the Milky Way. It is astounding how untidy these celestial bodies are! But you should know, living right up here in their nieghborhoodf' And I do know, Clara Berry signhcl. It's pretty trying, but then Miriam White and Eloise Wheeler are marvelously executive as air-trailic cops, and you've no idea how they help. Norman Davis has certainly been a great aid by her invention of a regulator for dust particles in the air. This sudden rise to atmospheric dwelling has completely revolutionized the country, began the groom, who evidently objected to such obvious neglect on the part of his bride. It has, agreed Clara Berry sweetly, and Billie added: I should say so! Who would ever have tho't Marion Vasel would go in for tinted parachutes? But she has, and she's making a fortune. It's just as stylish now'a-days to have your parachute match your dress, as it used to be to have shoes and hose harmonize. Oh, and Billie! Guess who runs the airplane repair shop three blocks across! Mattie May Hubble! And Marguerite Thompson owns the gasoline station next to it! S9 1-1---:ff -5-2-wie 'f YQ ' 'Q Aa 'fiwj' ,fel Y ' ' 5f '. Fi.-L .1.T1?.-Tag' Tielwrgw- Yes? Well, Ruth Hinshaw is making a splendid success of her balloon factory, while Margaret McBean is rapidly getting a reputation for being the most reliable balloon pilot of the air. Frances Wright is her chief mechanic. Well, Billie, speaking of miracles and unbelievable occupations-what do you think of Mary Nell jones's accepting a position as private secretary to Mars? Great! That reminds me-I don't know how'-of the unique wedding Katherine Cotham had for newspaper notoriety. She had an underseas ceremony, and Beatrice Owens swam and dived at the wedding. Kat wore a diamondestudded white diving-suit, and Rich wore a suit of dark blue. It was a grand stunt for publicity. I had a wonderful time, and met Jennie Anderson there. She's teaching in the deaf and dumb school in Columbus. Who else did you see there? Eleanor Bennett married them! Benny? Why, I tho't she'd be a lawyer. We all didg but she began to study for the ministry as soon as she left Sullins. What's Tommy doing? Clara Berry queried. You know she always did intend to be a nurse, and now she is one in the incubator hospital in Brooklyn! By the way, I had a letter from Lillian Westcott last week. She and Mary Barnhart own a line bunch of race horses, and they pick a winner nearly every race. Lillian rode in the last derby herself, and won by three lengths. And only yesterday, I read in a magazine about a Sullins graduate who is perfecting an invisible ant destroyer. Leah Frances Weinberg! Do you know what her old room-mate, Alice Roberts, has done? She has just published a book on 'Reformation of Misdirected Cowboys,' and the royalties are huge. Suddenly Miss Mignault began to laugh. I was in the East this week, and can you imagine what Betty Pyle jones is doing? She is designing a sun-protector for the Washington Monument! Goodness! exclaimed Clara Berry. But, listen, Alice Beatty has just recently opened her home as a refuge for studious young girls seeking to escape matrimony, and Martie Fenton is helping her and incidentally making a name for herself by issuing engraved newspapers. Surely you've heard of them? No, I haven't, but I can tell you something to equal her career. What? Margaret jackson owns the Funeral Home and Crematory in Savannah, while Alice Brunson is sponsoring Z1 home for the children of grass-widows. My! Half our class seems to have gone in for homes. Mary Pharr has one for syncopated bachelors, and Alada Crain has become philanthropic by linancing an infirmary for aged victims of alcoholism. Do you know what Ruth Light's doing? Yes, she's head of the kindergarten department just started in the University of Texas. She wrote to Kathryn Carr, who's leading a life of leisure after her amazing invention of airfproof cosmetics, and Kathryn wrote to me. What about Rosalie Heinauer? asked Berry. Oh, she's been in France for three years trying to make the president pay the War Debt. And Mareata Atkinson is on a peace tour thru Germany. Oh--that reminds me! Annie Laurie McCarver has taken up Tex Rickard's work and is backing Philipa Klippel in the International Woman's Ring Championship! Can you imagine Flip a prize fighter? Billie, I nearly forgot to tell you what Martha Johnson is doing! She's been elected cheer leader on it it -.r N si one of the floating universities! Mary Jackson is the girls' basketfball coach on board ship, while Edna Harris , who had that good alto voice, is glee club director. They met Elizabeth Sanford in Paris! What? What is Betty doing there? She and Elizabeth Bowers are interpreters in the Bureau of Foreign Ailairsf' But I was sure she'd do something in the musical field. So was I, but Sullins was full, and she refused all other oEers. At this point, young Mr. Wiggins interrupted again: By the way, Miss Mignault, what do you think of Mary Zachary's chances for President? Well, retorted Billie, she'll surely be elected if our old classfmate, Ruth Urann, has anything to do with it. She's been making heated speeches all over the country. Florence Fuller travels with her to advertise Fuller's Factory of Celluloid Shoes. 90 - -,it Y -nes -,--,,- Y...-s... . -- -. - ...Q -V - 5 .-5 ff -f-fi, .g., --'ver-1, ie n We nearly forgot Lib Stokely, our class president. What is she doing, Billie? Here comes the surprise-she's an artist's model in New York! But-did her parents permit it? u u No, she ran away from home. Said she felt the urge, and that was all that was necessary. You know Lib! Lets Doane has actually become famous by publishing her formula for making babies' hair curl naturally. Lucille Newman and Althea Zimmerman have opened a beauty parlor just off Sullins' campus. As you may imagine, it's a huge success. Margaret Myers and Lucille Fugate have just started a style shop in an annex to the old Y Hut, and Bernice Miller does the bookfkeeping. Dorothy Duncan's patented exhaustless fountain pens are advertised along with the frocksf' The little bride cast a quick, but intent, glance at her patient, but hungry husband. -I guess that's about all in our class, she said rather nervously. The new cook arose decisively. And now for Robert's lunch and the bridge tea. But, Billie, Clara Berry protested, you can't do this. I'll call up for some one else. Indeed you won't, honey. I'm after experience, and this is as good a way as any to get it. With that, she marched into the kitchen, and soon the brisk rattle of pots and pans reached the ears of the newly- weds. A little later came the savory odor of delicious food. And young Mr. Robert Wiggins breathed an audible sigh of relief. -Shivley Frances Roth. 91 Last Will cmd Testament We, the Senior Class of 1929, sojourning at Sullins College, Bristol, Virginia, and being of wholly sound and sane mind, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament, revoking all previous wills made by us, thus: To Mrs. Pharr we leave our unqualified gratitude and appreciation of all she has done for us. Much credit, indeed, must be given Mrs. Harry Martm, director of the department, who has displayed uncanny foresight in both the casting and the staging of various performances. The first dramatic appearance of members of the 1928429 Curry Club occurred No- vember third when they presented an exquisite onefact play, L'The King's Fool, preceded by three entertaining readings of interesting variety. Mary john Vaughn, Dorothy Mignault, Carol Hamlin, Ann McMurray, Jennie Anderson, and Shirley Roth made up the ensemble. The members of the club distinguished themselves in their portrayal of the farce comedy, 'iThe Whole Town's Talking, which was presented in the college auditorium, November 20, 1928. Much praise is due Carol Hamlin, Frances Bell, Dorothy Mignault, Frances Wright, Alada Crain, Jennie Anderson, Mary Haigler, Leah Frances Weinberg, Dorothy Arm- strong, and Frances Mabry. The action centers about a henfpeckecl manufacturer, who desires that his beautiful young 'daughter marry his slovenly, inexperienced partner, because of his wife's require- ments, he finds it necessary to encourage the aforesaid partner to sow some wild oats in order to appear as a man of the world. A supposed love aflfair between the partner and a motion picture star was highly painted, and all would have ended happily had not the star decided to visit the town which was talking in buzzing whispers about her intrigue with Chet Binney. Q Therein lies the interest, the suspense, and the thread of the play. After due explanations and heartfaches, to say nothing of a duel, the play ends in another laugh. An enjoyable feature of the Christmas activities was the play given December fifth. Seldom, indeed, has any performance so gone home to the hearts of a Sullins audience as did The Goose Hangs High. The plot centers about the loving, cultured father and mother of three children, eagerly awaiting the latters' homefcoming for the holidays. Their eldest son is a man of QContinued nn page 138D 136 R 1 :am my r w Lf: TEACHER OM Tun Lrrr FR E EN Sc Behind the F ootlights CContinued from page 136D the world, the twins are collegiate An appealing story develops when the parents find their sons and daughter almost unbelievably thoughtless and reckless in their modern views and ideas. They seem callous, flippantg but in the crisis, they become strong, self' sacrilicing, and efficient human beings, ready to help mother and dad even to the extent of giving up their careers. Leading roles were taken by Loa Mae Michael, Shirley Roth, Ann McMurray,Patsy Nall, Ninette Rogers, Mareata Atkinson. Sara Ellen Davidge and Janet Johnson were most convincing villains. BEAUTIFULLY inspiring rendinon of Why the Chimes Rang inspired college and townspeople with a feeling of reverence for the true meaning of Christmas. As the final majestic chime of the organ died away in the hushed stillness of the chapel, there could be no doubt that the simple beauty of the theme had penetrated the heart of every listener. Unusual ability was displayed by the members of the cast: Carol Hamlin, Dorothy Mignault, Emily Woodruff, and Sara Ellen Davidge. Perhaps the most outstanding play of the season was The Little Teacher, char' acterized by its unique setting and plot. The scene is laid in the mountains of Vermont, and the plot is delicately woven around two children, stolen from their mother and, several years later, rescued by the little teacher, who has taken charge of the country school, and who, in spite of the narrowness and degradation around her, succeeds in bringing higher ideals to the isolated community. Miss Emily Woodruii', in the title role, displayed distinct ability and charm of personality. The other members of the cast, Dorothy Mignault, Carol Hamlin, Mary John Vaughn, Shirley Roth, Lois Graham, Ann McMurray, Frances Bell, Kathryn Mc' Neely, Leah Frances Weinberg, janet Johnson, Sara Ellen Davidge, Frances Mabry and Loa Mae Michael, all won praiseworthy distinction by their individual characterization. The most unusual feature of the comedyfdrama, however, was the brilliant debut of little Mary Kathleen Martin, who took the part of the younger of the kidnapped children, and carried her role with amazing ability and poise. Other plays enjoyed by the college audiences during the year were The Man Who Died at Twelve O'clock, The Passing of the Third Floor Back, and She Stoops to Conquer. 138 SHIRLEY FRANCES ROTH Certificate in Expression Plays: In the Vanguard -the Rector's daughter. The colonial idea was carried our in the decorations and in the costumes of those serving. Mrs. Harry Martin, Sponsor of the Club, and Miss Shirley Roth, president, received the guests. Among the other social functions enjoyed by the Curry Club Was the autumn picnic, at which Mrs. Martin was a most gracious hostess. Rotherwood made a beautiful setting for this occasion. P The annual Christmas dinner, given at the Hotel General Shelby, was an impress' ively formal aifair. rDecorations were in charge of the Bristol Floral Company, and the color scheme of red and White was exquisitely carried out in every derail. 4 140 4 frunnunnum, W: Be.ng'Pq1c A W Sampler Stajjf ALICE BRUNSON MARION VASEL Athletic Editor Literary Editor MARTHA FBNTON ZERILDA E. The council, sponsored by Mrs. Kelly, includes the ofhcers elected by popular vote, and the representatives chosen by the classes. During this year, the council has bought two basket-balls, and two ten' nis nets, besides making arrangements to have the tennis courts repaired. ' The members of the council have various duties to perform. They check the recreation of every girl, arrange the inter-class basketfball games, plan various unique and attractive functions in order to make a little extra money for their use, and order and give out emblems and cups. They are planning to present Miss Philipa Klippel with a cup for her last year's tennis championship. On February 9, the Association gave a beautiful valentine costume dance. The Alabamians furnished the music. The Athletic Association is this year working to become ri member of the National Womanis Athletic Association. All the girls worked hard, faithfully attending practices, and train' ing, even though they were told that there could be no intercollegiate games this year. The first class game was played in the gym between the high school and the juniors, the juniors winning 306. December 17, the high school was doomed to lose again, after a hard fought battle, to the seniors. February 11, the juniors again showed their skill and team work in the game they played against the seniors, winning 2845, and thus winning the championship. From the very beginning the juniors outplayed their opponents. The last game ofthe season, between the high school and the seniors on February 13, was one of the fastest and most exciting games ever played on a Sullins court. At the quarter the high school led by a score that almost doubled the senior score, but at the end of the first half the seniors led, 1847. The rest of the game was evenly divided, one side taking the lead and then the other. With only a minute or so to play and the score 21121, both teams fought harder than ever. The whistle blew for time, but the ball had left Mary Zachary's hands, went in, and won the game for the seniors, 23-21, thus giving them second place. There were so many exceptionally good players on the three teams, that it was with much diiiiculty that Mrs. Kelly chose the Honorary Varsity team. 153 H +R- - H-AAWW' gee- ' - r W 3- 1-ilgnxnlpllt -gi::!f1i3L YL -- 4 - 1 ifs D v-- - -f , Tennis Club PHILIPA KL11-PBI. This is Sullins! Yes, really, though from the tearfdimmed eyes around, you wouldn't really think it were Sullins. They're just homesick, though, and they'll get over it, they always do. I never in my life saw so many girls, or imagined this many could get together without tearing hair or doing something dramatic. Why, they're so glad to see each other! They hug and shout and dance around and sing something about Hail to Thee, our Alma Mater that sends queer shivers up and down me. The man who plays the organ-I think his name is Loomis-makes more music, just divine. They told us not to be homesick and what we owe to our parents: and, really, I feel like a Crusader. I'm going to love this place, though, or my name's not Susy Smith. Oh, yes, the lights flash at ten and we have to hop into bed and reach for the button when the lights flash again atrtenfhfteen. We're going to be healthy little girls! And there it flashes, so I must be hopping! Sept. 13-Oh, I'm just thrilled to death-almost. The old girls gave the new girls a party down at the Hut. Everybody had her name pinned on, and I wish you could have heard them all shrieking, Oh, do you know Bob Carter? Isn't he the cutest thing? or, Oh, my dear, do you really live in Oklahoma City? or something like that. Some girl with black hair, her name is Mert Harris, played the piano and we danced. Really, we did just have the grandest time. Sept. 14-This matriculation business is no joke. I have an awful schedule, and what with practice periods, I don't know whether I'll have time to live or not. Saw some teachers-guess I'll really have to study. We signed up for classes and registered. My brain is already whirling, don't you know I'd have Math and French on the same day three times a week? Methinks, dear Diary, that I am growing up. Long ago when I was a child and in high school, I should certainly have criedg but, being a grown young lady, 1 shall have to go to bed and forget it. Sept. 16-We all dressed up in our Sunday best and went down to the Methodist Church. We marched in and sang and listened and came home. Sundays are pretty awful at boarding school, I am discovering. But the vesper services are lovely-just at twilight. The vested choir comes marching in singing. There's beautiful music: and somehow it makes the queerest ache down inside me. Dr. Yost is the dearest mang he talks to us so understandingly. Sept. 18-Faculty recital! My goodness, I didn't know even a music faculty could do such things. Music hath power to soothe the savage breast. I'm not perfectly sure that saying applies to me but I do feel all soothed. Miss Renard is wonderful. Sept. 22-Diary, there's so much doing around this school I hardly have time to breathe. Dr. Martin gave us the grandest weinie roast tonight. Everybody slipped and fell and crawled down the hill on the back of the campus to a huge bonhre. The old girls sang to the new girls and we all yelled. There's one song' something about Evi-vofevolution that I've sung until I'm hoarse. And we had hot dogs and bunsland marsh, mallows. Oh, I do like this place. My letters home sound like why you should send your daughter to Sullinsf' Sept. 28-Lake Day! We had our first taste of Virginia Muddle, and to understand, you'd have to taste it yourself. But first there were some swimming races that a high school girl named janet Johnson just walked away with. And there was a horse race and push ball-and then oodles of food. We had such a good time, but I am so tired I won't mind light flash. I don't mind it anywayg I just object to it because of the principle of the thing. 175 Oct mornmg DIARY Contmued 5 Say thxs 1S gettmg to well see for yourself be old I m so tlred of just goxng to school Dlary We get up 1n the 7 0OiRlSlDg bell 7 30-Breakfast bell 5 50 10 20 11 15 12 25 12 25 O0 1 0 txll 8 55 English t1ll 9 50-Pract1ce trll 10 20-Chapel txll 11 15 Hrstory txll 12 10-Math Ma1l t1ll 1 O0-Musxc lesson Lunch trll 2 30-French 2 so t1ll3 30-Gym 3 30 txll 4 20-Nothxng 4 20-Maxl 4 20 trll 5 OO-Hxkmg 5 30-Chorus pract1ce 6 OO-Dmner And between trmes I ve been to three club meetings and have danced m the gym And do you know I ve gamed four pounds I tell you I m gettmg to be such a seasoned board1ng school gal that I m even gettmg 3 Oct 6 Bacon bat at Kmg College' No I never heard of one before But we went over to the Kmg College campus and had cute httle dates We toasted food and sat by the bonfire and came home at mne o clock And Drary I wanted a specxal from lnm tomte and l drdn t get rt Oct 7 We rode 1n cars you know real cars just as we have at home nules and mxles and mxle to the Pressman s Home near Rogersvxlle Tennessee We walked all over the beautmful grounds The Me morxal Chapel 1S EXQUISIUB And we had a prcruc lunch served on the grounds We came back by johnson Crty and Ehzabethton Had the most glorzous r1de The leaves are the most gorgeous colors Well I can t help rt I rn just naturally feehng superlatrve I thrnk Rotarlans are grand' Oct 13 I can t write every day but I ll wrxte th1s tune You see I m not wrxtxng lnm a letter and so I ll have enough extra tune I ve been to a real dance I mean a dance wxth a real orchestra It was sponsored by the SAMPLER staff and was colleglate We had the best txme I really dldn t rmagme dances w1th grrls would be so much fun Php Khppel was the most collegxate boy and Dot Fortune the most collegrate gxrl The gym was decorated w1th pennants and huge paper colleglate men Oh I had a marvelous tlme but am I ever tired? They marched in and we all stood up. It looked like Onward, Christian Soldiers, but nobody ever said a word. Anyway, they looked dignilied and we were all properly impressed. I've a quiz in Math tomorrow, and Miss McKellar really means it, so goodnight, Diary. Oct. 27-The juniors gave the Hallowe'en party tonight. The gym looked spooky with witches and pumpkins and ghosts draped around. The music was grand. Lois Graham sang and Mary john Vaughn told ghost stories. Of course, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to go see Bluebeard's wives and through the Chamber of Horrors. Consequently, I'm a little shaky. Nov. 2-The Curry Club gave the most exquisite little play, The King's Fool. It was lovely enough to make me a little bit weepy. Daddy wired my grades today. I'm feeling less important. This isn't high school any more, Diary, not really! Nov. 9-The juniors gave the seniors a banquet at the Hotel Shelby. It was beautiful. All the big sisters dragged along with the little sisters, the big ones with corsages proudly pinned on. We had a delicious dinner. Dot Burchard made the speech of welcome and Lib Stokely responded. We all stood up and sang our dear old Alma Mater, and then Mrs. Baskervill presented the seniors with their privileges. We must all grow up and be dignified and get privileges! Nov. 11-Vesper services were for Armistice Day. Shirley Roth read The Shooting of jean Dupre and Mary John Vaughn read Yellow Butterflies. The choir sang I.itany for All Souls' Day -a perfectly lovely thing. Of course, Dr. Yost talked a while, and said just the thing that should be said in his own inimitf able manner. Nov. 16-It's too awful the way Ida Belle Roberts gets telegrams. I just plain envy her. Nov. 17-Went to a Kid party, a dance given down at the Hut by the high school. Had an awfully good time, but I have that traditional Saturday tiredness. Nov. 18-juniors serenaded seniors. The dignified ones stood in the hall a la negligee and appreciated our charming little gesture very much. We approve of them and they approve of us. Now, I ask you if that isn't nice? ' Nov. 20- The Whole Town's Talking -the Curry Club does give the best plays. This one was a scream. Carol Hamlin was the modern father of a very modern daughter, Frances Wright. Ethel, the said daughter, wanted to be sophisticated and marry a man of the world, but Chester Binney, Billie Mignault, scared away all competition by posing as the former lover of a screen actress, Mary Haigler. Alada Crain was the darlingest man of the worldf' I don't blame Ethel. There was a huge fight and the lights went off and it was thrilling, really. And then of course it ended happily ever after. Nov. 26-First Muddle! Everybody sitting around on steps and things with their heads poked in a Muddle. They surely are clever. Nov. 30-Here I sit. I know, Diaryg I really am thankful for everything. But I'm also lonesome. Everybody's gone 0E somewhere. Some girls went to V. M. I. to the game and dancesg some went to W. and Lg some went to Knoxvilleg and two even went tracking up to New York to the Army-Stanford game! And, I repeat, here I sit. I rated a Thanksgiving box. We had a Thanskgiving dinner last night. But that doesn't help my position any! Well, I'm going to write my family and tell them how thankful I am for them, anyway. He might have sent me a telegram. Nov. 27- The Goose Hangs High was a darling Christmas play given by the Curry Club. I just can't wait to get home and show my family how thoughtful and sweet I am. It's getting so close to Christmas. just imagine! Dec. 8-The Home Economics Club gave a dinner dance tonight. We had a musical time and the food was delicious. The May Day of long ago came back and reigned again amid the grand old trees and on the flower bedecked campus, which forms ' an ideal setting for a scenepf such picturesque beauty and brilliance. Heralded by a blast of trumpets, the pageant opened with a procession-a gorgeous picture of youth, color and grace. Interest centered on the approach of the queen clad . in regal robes, preceded by mounted horsemen and accompanied by her court. l Miss Alice Beatty with her brunette beauty, graceful figure, and charming personality l represented an ideal type for Her Gracious Majesty, around whom the May Day Fete was centered. High on a silver throne garlanded with flowers, she presided over the revels and dances which included Grecian numbers, Russian folk dances, the graceful scarf dance, and the time honored minuet. The singing Of the Blue Danube Waltz by the entire chorus under the direction of Mme. Edla Lund was a beautiful addition to the program. Queen Alice wore with queenly grace the crown bestowed upon her by Mrs. Baskerf vill with the following words: W, J. an Queen rose Of the rosebud garden of girls, In gloss of satin and glimmer of pearls, Queen lily and rose in One! I Welcome her all things youthful and sweet- Scatter the blossoms under her feet! Break, happy land, into earlier flowers!
