Karo is King During Freshman Fling This is for all those who participated in freshman initiation, one way or another. Saturday morning the shaving cream and karo syrup started to pour, and not for shaving or breakfast. The fresh¬ man class, or at least those who had the courage, went down with the upper classmen to the parking lot of Ferguson Hall. The going on from there was sticky and messy. After the freshmen females were pre¬ pared for their husbands, they were marched up the road toward Smith Hall. They were then formally intro¬ duced to their future spouses, married, kissed, and paddled if they were unwilling to proceed with the cere¬ mony. The white washing of the Bar-SR-Bar was done with pails, brushes and neg¬ ligence. At least a total of ten rocks were whitewashed during the half hour on the mountain. Afterwards there was a procession to Brewster County Courthouse for the burying of the cig¬ arette butt. It was here that the married couples were divorced and left to walk home. jmnmi i

Burger Munchers Compete for High “Steaks” Hamburgers! Hamburgers! Hamburgers! And yet more ham¬ burgers. On September 24, 1974 the cafeteria personnel staged a hamburger eating contest open to all hungry Sul Ross students. Hamburgers were demolished by the dozens. Nine contestants were signed up for the burger contest, but only eight actually participated. The outcome saw David Sherrel (lower right picture) eat eleven hamburgers in one hour. He received first place honors. Receiving second place was Sam Murphy who ate eight burgers. Jo Ray DeLaCruz received third place for consuming seven burgers. First prize was a 2-pound, T-bone steak dinner for winner and date at Mountainside dining hall. Would you believe sec¬ ond place was a hamburger dinner? 22
