This summer normal program prompted the movement leading to the creation of the college in 1917. 6 Yet today all that is left are memories of the way we were. 7 Sul Ross: A Colorful History of Progress The Big Bend area has been a wilder¬ ness of many contrasts: high, majestic mountains touching the sky; scrub brush and cactus covering rough, rug¬ ged terrain; stretches of desert waste¬ lands sheltering an abundance of wild¬ life; and herds of antelope and mule deer grazing serenely among stately yucca plants. In 1882-83 the Southern Pacific Rail¬ road cut its way across this wilderness from El Paso to San Antonio. Near the famous Burgess Watering Hole, a sta¬ tion stop was built which enabled the old steam locomotives to load up with much needed water. In 1883 the sta¬ tion stop was given the name of Mur- phyville and the town continued to develop as the railroad brought more trade to the area. In 1887 Brewster County was created and Murphyville, being the only sizable community, served as the county seat. During this time, considerable dissatisfaction developed on the part of the people of Murphyville with the name of the com¬ munity, and in 1888 petitions sent to the Texas Legislature changed the town’s name to Alpine. Alpine became a major trading and shipping center for an extensive ranching and mining activity in the Big Bend area. By this time the town’s business district had expanded to three blocks of store fronts that faced the railroad depot. Alpine also supported five saloons at the time. As Alpine grew into a potential cultural center for West Texas, the town was propelled into a new role. Rather than remain a “cowtown” with the bare necessities for city dwellings, the town entered into a period of rapid develop¬ ment and improvement and was incor¬ porated in 1917. In the early part of this century, the people of West Texas began to won¬ der why there were not any institutions of higher learning west of San Antonio. Educators began to petition the Texas Legislature to initiate funds to establish a college in West Texas. In 1917 the legislature agreed to appropriate such funds and the town of Alpine was cho¬ sen to be th e site of the Sul Ross Nor¬ mal College, an institution designed to train teachers. Construction of the present day Administration Building began in February 1919. Thomas Fletcher was selected as president of the college and he closely supervised the construction of the campus’ first building in order that it be ready for the opening of the 1920 summer session. Sul Ross Normal College opened its doors to students June 14, 1920. Sev¬ enty-seven students were enrolled for summer courses. Fifteen students came from Alpine, eight from Mara¬ thon, seven from El Paso, five from Regan Wells, and the balance from widely scattered places: Mertzon, Buckholts, Garrison, Bartlett, Bracket- ville, Uvalde, Del Rio, Santa Anna, Eagle Pass, Gonzales, San Angelo, George West, Marshall, Hamilton, Chilicothe, Kentucky Town, Shive, Carrizo Springs and Floresville. This wide distribution of students supports evidence that Sul Ross had a wide appeal from the very start. Fletcher had just begun to get the college on its feet when he resigned in July 1920 to accept another position, and R. L. Marquis was soon selected to serve as the second president of Sul Ross. The college opened its first long term session Sept. 23, 1920, with 75 stu¬ dents registered the first day and 10 the second day. The final total reached 118 students which included 24 first and second graders enrolled in the college’s demonstration school. In recognition of the school’s opening, the Alpine Avalanche published the following editorial: “Many in other parts of the state freely predict that Sul Ross has no future, that its doors will soon close for lack of students. The people of West Texas have long desired an institution of higher learn¬ ing. They rightly felt they were entitled to it. They have secured it; let them now get behind and push it, so they may retain it. For a school like this needs above all else a student body. Our prediction is that Sul Ross will become one of the leading schools in the State of Texas.” In September 1922 Sul Ross’ enroll¬ ment had increased to 140 students. The college was slowly growing. In 1923 the State Legislature changed the college’s name to Sul Ross State Teacher ' s College and Dr. H. W. More- lock assumed the role of the college’s third president. Morelock immediately proceeded to engage in a constructive development and building program, and during the 22 years that he was administrator the much needed facili¬ ties had been installed. In fact, a year rarely passed without some new build¬ ing constructed or some new piece of equipment added to the college’s facil¬ ities. In 1 923-24 Hancock Pool, a n outdoor natatorium, was constructed. The college took over Berkely Hall that same year. This building was the col¬ lege’s first dormitory for women. It had previously been privately managed by aid from the people of Alpine. In 1924 tennis courts were added to the cam¬ pus and Jackson Field, athletic grounds for both baseball and football, was constructed. In 1925, a nine-hole golf course was added to the college’s recreational facilities. The early students of Sul Ross dis¬ played much pride and spirit in their school. On April 1, 1925, students dili¬ gently climbed the hill behind the col¬ lege and spent a gruling day gathering and piling rocks to form the Bar-SR- Bar brand on the side of the hill. This was a very important event in the his¬ tory of the college. That October fresh¬ men students were compelled to climb the hill again and whi tewash the rocks. Since then the painting of the SR brand has remained one of the most important activities of freshmen orien¬ tation week each year. In 1926-27 the citizens of Alpine con¬ structed some 41 modern cottages for student residence. A gymnasium was constructed at the cost of $35,000. The State had appropriated $20,000, and the citizens of Alpine and well-to- do ranchers once again contributed money in the sum of $15,000 to finish the project. In 1930 the present day Education Building was constructed to serve as a library-classroom-cafeteria complex. During the 1930 ' s many new structures were added to the campus. These structures included the tennis courts, rock stadium, two residence halls for men, a large museum (now Student Center) and a bowling alley (now the Museum of the Big Bend). In 1938 Lawrence Hall was built to house women students. Dr. Morelock, after 22 years of service to Sul Ross, retired in August 1945. Under his guidance many new facili¬ ties were added to the college. More- lock had promoted the beginning of the Sul Ross Skyline in 1923. The Brand was first published in 1921. During his administration a large num¬ ber of literary organizations and schol- - arship clubs were established and Morelock personally instituted and supervised graduate work at Sul Ross. Dr. Richard Melvin Hawkins took over the Sul Ross presidency in September, 1945. His administration went to great lengths to encourage the football, rodeo and drama programs at the col¬ lege. In 1946 Paul E. Pierce and W. H. Perryman were selected to direct the program of intercollegiate football at Sul Ross and from 1947-50 the Lobos won four consecutive conference titles. Hawkins also strengthened and im proved the teacher training pro¬ gram. In 1948 a new modern swim¬ ming pool was added to the campus facilities. Later—a student center (Old Dining Hall), the Fine Arts Building, Ferguson Hall, and a new school cafe¬ teria (TKE House) were constructed. In 1949 state legislation changed the col¬ lege’s name to Sul Ross State College. Hawkins left the office of president in 1952 to accept another position. Dr. Bryan Wildenthal was quickly selected to fill the vacancy. At this time Sul Ross boasted an enrollment rate that was far better than most state col¬ leges. In 1952 the enrollment was just over the 500 mark and by 1965 it had nearly tripled. Wildenthal’s administra¬ tion constructed five major buildings which included the Science Building, Marquis and Smith Halls, Morelock Hall and the Health and Physical Edu¬ cation Building for men. The old gym¬ nasium was renovated into a much needed gym for women. Then in an effort to demonstrate real college pride in the achievements of ex-students, Wildenthal declared Nov. 11, 1961, as Norman Cash Day. Cash was a gradu¬ ate of Sul Ross who had played both football and baseball for the Lobos. He had gone to make a name for himself with the Detroit Tigers in the American League. On more than one occasion, Dr. Wildenthal invited and entertained Dan Blocker, a graduate of Sul Ross and TV’s “Hoss Cartwright.” Ouite unexpectantly, Wildenthal died of a stroke June 1, 1965, only after having made a great contribution to the stu¬ dents of Sul Ross. The Board of Regents selected Dr. Norman L. McNeil to take over the office. Enrollment had increased to almost 1,400 and by 1971 it had almost doubled. During the years of 1965-71 some $5 million were spent on the enlargement and development of the physical plant. Construction of the Bryan Wildenthal Library and Mountainside Dormitory and Cafeteria were the major—contributions of the administration. The “Old Museum” was remodeled into the Student Cen¬ ter and the area between the Fine Arts Building and the Administration Build¬ ing was landscaped—into the Mall. The Industrial Arts Building was also added to the campus. Some $200,000 alone was spent on improving Jackson Field and adding a new track stadium to the complex. A research center for field biologists and geologists was established with the National Parks Service at Big Bend National Park. Sul Ross and Alpine received extensive publicity due to the winning of the national championship in girls’ volley¬ ball, and the fact that there were Olym¬ pic players of the Sul Ross team added prestige to the university. “Now some 50 years since the open¬ ing of Sul Ross Normal School in June 1920, Sul Ross State University gives every evidence of stability and steady growth and there is little doubt that it shall long remain as one of the main educational and economic factors in the development of the Big Bend Area.” Today Sul Ross is a thriving academic community with a yearly enrollment of nearly 2,800. Dr. Hugh E. Meredith was selected in 1974 to serve as the college’s seventh presi¬ dent. This is just a brief history of Sul Ross State University. The deeds and accomplishments of the many thou¬ sands of students that have attended Sul Ross cannot possibly be recorded. They are just memories in the minds of many people, but it is these memories of “the way we were” that have made Sully what it is today. Each student who has attended Sul Ross over the years has unknowingly made his or her contribution to the history of this college. As a history instructor would put it, “It’s history in the making,” and in the 231 pages is recorded the way we were” in 1975. —Material taken from Dr. Clifford B. Saturday morning the shaving cream and karo syrup started to pour, and not for shaving or breakfast. The fresh¬ man class, or at least those who had the courage, went down with the upper classmen to the parking lot of Ferguson Hall. The going on from there was sticky and messy. After the freshmen females were pre¬ pared for their husbands, they were marched up the road toward Smith Hall. They were then formally intro¬ duced to their future spouses, married, kissed, and paddled if they were unwilling to proceed with the cere¬ mony. The white washing of the Bar-SR-Bar was done with pails, brushes and neg¬ ligence. At least a total of ten rocks were whitewashed during the half hour on the mountain. Afterwards there was a procession to Brewster County Courthouse for the burying of the cig¬ arette butt. It was here that the married couples were divorced and left to walk home. jmnmi i 21 Burger Munchers Compete for High “Steaks” Hamburgers! Hamburgers! Hamburgers! And yet more ham¬ burgers. On September 24, 1974 the cafeteria personnel staged a hamburger eating contest open to all hungry Sul Ross students. Hamburgers were demolished by the dozens. Nine contestants were signed up for the burger contest, but only eight actually participated. The outcome saw David Sherrel (lower right picture) eat eleven hamburgers in one hour. He received first place honors. Receiving second place was Sam Murphy who ate eight burgers. Jo Ray DeLaCruz received third place for consuming seven burgers. First prize was a 2-pound, T-bone steak dinner for winner and date at Mountainside dining hall. Would you believe sec¬ ond place was a hamburger dinner? 22 Blue Knights in Action The Blue Knights Drill Team of the 849th Air Force ROTC Detachment winged its way to success here at Sul Ross. Several times during the year the group presented performances consisting of precision marching and close order drill. Many hours of individ¬ ual and team practice was spent in preparation for these performances. The drill team staged a performance at the second Alpine Air Tours that was sponsored by the Arnold Air Society. They also performed at the halftime activities during the Sul Ross and San Marcos game. During the spring semester the group represented the university in the College Drill Team Competition at Laredo. F 23 Nuttiest Day of the Year Versatile Grady Nutt, a professional humorist by occupation, a Baptist minister by ordination, a writer by vocation, appeared before a Sul Ross audience, Friday, Sept. 20, 1974. Grady plays a dozen different instruments, juggles, sings, lectures, and performs before groups all over the U. S. But most of all, Grady is known for his own unique brand of wit and wisdom, as he rapidly builds a nationwide reputation as a downhome, believable performer with an ability to extract humor from life around us. To some he is “the Will Rogers of today.” 24 Classical Guitarist Strums up Entertainment Alfred Street, classical guitarist, performed Nov. 5, 1974, at the Sul Ross Main Auditorium. Street is a native of southern France and studied music at the Conservatoire de Nice. He has given concerts at universities and colleges in more than 30 states including Hawaii and has performed on radio and television as well. Street’s concerts have been met with extraordinary success among young audiences. Some of his repertoire included: “En Los Trigales, “Five Lute Pieces of the Italian Renaissance,” and “Two Preludes” by J. S. Bach. 25 HOMECOMING, USA Homecoming USA — a time of foot¬ ball, queens, bonfires, parades, dances, concerts, and rodeos. Sul Ross students and ex-students cele¬ brated the homecoming festivities with traditional style. Four dances, a band concert, a four- day rodeo and a reception for the 1964 Lobos were on tap for this past year’s Homecoming. Highlighting the festive weekend was the Homecoming parade, the game and the coronation of the Queen and court. Cindy Heatly was crowned Homecom¬ ing Queen during halftime of the Sul Ross and Abilene Christian College game. Other members of the court included Marty Minjares, Marcia Jones, Bertha Orta, and Cynthia Ten- iente. Alpha Kappa Lambda’s, service frater¬ nity, float was the winning float in a field of 50 contestants during the Homecoming parade. The parade’s theme was “conserving energy.’’ The AKL’s expanded of this idea with the theme “We conserve everything but our spirits ” They won $100 and a pla¬ que for their entry. 26 27 (VIVA TERLINGUA! Terlingua Fever” struck again as 6,000 people from all over the United States flocked into this ghost town to witness the internationally famous Chili Cookoff. Although the theme for the cookoff was the culinary art of chili making, extra-curricular activities were the order of the day. And the merry makers were as varied as their person¬ alities. 28 30 31 The Show Must Go on 32 33 Hikers Raise Money for Project Hope Phi Mu fraternity conducted a Hike for Hope during the fall semester. Faculty, students and townspeople turned out to walk the ten mile route to raise money for Project Hope, an American-based organization that dis¬ tributes medical supplies and gives medical aid to foreign countries around the world. The day before the event the fraternity members had kidnapped president Meredith, Dean Posey and Dean Bass for ransom. Of course the money did go to P roject Hope. Dr. Meredith how¬ ever was able to gain freedom by win¬ ning a ping-pong match. The hike was termed a huge success and the organization was able to raise a total of $1,000 with the help of par¬ ticipating hikers. 34 35 Go on Home, Miss Sully Miss Sully, Sul Ross mascot for eight years, died Thursday, November 21, 1974. Miss Sully was found early Thursday morning by a maintenance personnel who noticed she was acting strange. Her condition was reported to security who called Dr. Paul Weyerts, RAS professor and a veterinarian. When Dr. Weyerts arrived at the lobo ' s cage, he found her in convulsions and assumed she had been poisoned. Miss Sully was immediately transported to the RAS clinic and by noon of that day she was dead. A 13-person committee composed of faculty and students decided to have a post mortum performed on the SR mascot, and donate her remains to the college’s biology department for sci¬ entific study. Dr. James Scudday, biol¬ ogy professor, had pointed out to the committee that Miss Sully belonged to a rare sub-specie of lobo, Canis lupus bayeli, of which about a dozen such animals remain in existence. Therefore her remains would be a valuable asset to research being conducted on these wolves. The result of the autopsy performed on Miss Sully showed that she had died of strychnine poison. An investigation was conducted, however no evidence was collected. Lauren Satterwhite, a senior range ani¬ mal science major from Alpine, had been Miss Sully’s caretaker for the , past year. 36 GO ON HOME Go on home, Miss Sully Now mankind has freed you From the prison he gave you When he chose to enslave you And lock you behind A strange woven fence. Go on home, Miss Sully, And roam the wild mountains. There’s no fence around you And men don ' t surround you, And no one can taunt you Through that strange woven fence. Go on home, Miss Sully To where you were as a puppy. Now someone has stilled you, Yes, mankind has killed you. You ’ll no longer pace That strange woven fence. Snow Gives Way to Hard Work and Winter Frolic 38 39 “The Mikado 3 3 The Sul Ross music department pre¬ sented the musical “The Mikado” dur¬ ing the spring semester. Starring in the production were Jeff Rodgers, James Rhodes, Michael Bender, Rick LoBello and Mark Hinds. Also starring were Penny Hardaway, Sara Long, Joella Minter and Della Dean. A chorus of 25 Sul Ross and Alpine High School students played the part of school girls and noblemen. “The Mikado,” first produced in 1885, is a fantasy concerning the events in the life of Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado, and his search for true love. His search is interrupted by Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner of Titipu, and Poh-Bah, a particularly noble and haughty youth. a Japanese Fantasy 40 42 43 (Clockwise) Francis Yau, Hong Kong student, fills the Little Theater with mellow music during the Best Dressed Contest. Starring in the production which was presented during the spring semester were: Jim McMillan, John Davis, John Gil¬ bert, Mike Bender, Carla Breckles, Jean O’Leary, Debbie Joy, Travis Tucker and Johnny Marlin. Shirley Boyd directed the choreography and Richard Honea directed the music. The plot followed the path of most melodramas. Yellow Feather’s quest for revenge was foiled by his capture and release of Little Mary by the brave Forest Rangers. 46 48 49 Peppier Receives Women Superstar Title Mary Jo Peppier, 1971 graduate of Sul Ross and former All- American Olympic volleyball star, received national acclaim as the first Woman Superstar on Jan. 29, 1975 at Rotunda, Fla. Ms. Peppier took first place in one of two final events to nose out basketball player Karen Logan by three points for the Women Superstars title and $34,100 in prize money. Ms. Peppier accumulated 41 points in seven of ten events to Ms. Logan’s 38 points. Ironically, Peppier gained the victory by winning Logan’s speciality, basketball. Competitors were not allowed to com¬ pete in their respective sport. Diver Micki King was third in the overall competition with 36 points. Peppier played on the Sul Ross volleyball team which won the Collegiate National Championship in 1970 and 1971. The team was coached by Marilyn Me Reavy, an ex-Olym¬ pian. She and Peppier were responsible for bringing volley¬ ball to Sully. After leaving Sul Ross in the fall 1971, Peppier, McReavy and the nucleus of the Sul Ross team moved to Houston to form an amateur team known as E Pluribus Unum which won several national championships. Peppier has since turned professional and is with the El Paso Juarez Sols, a profes¬ sional volleyball team which is affiliated with the International Volleyball Association. The game was marred by mishandling of the ball on the part of Sul Ross and Eastern New Mexico capitalized on each of these mistakes. Carl Chandler led the Lobo offensive drive throughout the game and was backed up by Bill Dimler who ran and blocked equally well. Both scored one TD each. Jeff Loerwald made what was perhaps the single most exciting play of the game when he kicked a 41 yard field goal, 2 yards short of the school record of 43 yards made by Paul Pas- qua in 1964 against East Texas State. Danny Squarok, who was at the helm for Sully most of the night, completed 11 of 24 passes for a 46 percent com¬ pletion average. Joe Sanchez and Buster Hawthorne were sighted by Coach Harvey as defensive standouts. Victory Sul Ross Clamps Down on Tarleton, 33-22 Starting off slow the Lobos jelled just before the second half to nail down their first victory of the year. After a scoreless first quarter the Lobos drew first blood on a Texan punting miscue. Lobo David Woods foiled Texan punter Steve Robertson’s efforts by blocking the attempt and Lonnie Siepp recovered the ball in the end zone for Sul Ross’s first score. Jeff Loerwald added the extra point, giving the Lobos a 7-0 lead. Late in the second half the Texans capitalized on a Lobo fumble and drove in four plays later to tie the game. With a little over a minute left to play in the first half, the Lobos mounted a 39- yard drive. A pass play from quarter¬ back Wayne Peters to Robert Bolden covered 27 yards and capped the drive with a seven point lead at the half. Early in the third quarter the Lobos struck again. David Woods intercepted an errant Texan pass deep in Tarleton territory and four plays later Peters on a 15-yard bootleg run scored. The PAT failed. The Tarleton Texans scored next on a 40-yard pass play. The extra point was good and the score stood 20-14. Loerwald intercepted a pass to set up the Lobos’ fourth talley. With the ball on the Texans ' 40, Carl Chandler and Bill Dimler ground out 25 yards to the fifteen and the remaining time in the third period. Peters, in the first play of the fourth quarter, connected with Ronnie Davis at the one and in the next play Chandler went in for the score. Loerwald’s kick was good and the score stood 27-14. Peters connected with Billy Byrd for an 85-yard pass play for the Lobos’ last score of the night. The Texans’ last TD came with three and a half minutes left to play when a well executed draw play allowed the Tarleton fullback to scamper 40-yards to score. The TSU quarterback then passed for two points making the final score 33-22. Yellowj ackets Sting the Lobos The Yellowjackets of Howard Payne College (HPC) swarmed into Alpine for the fourth game of the 1974 season and handed the Lobos a stinging 35- 10 loss. HPC jumped to an early lead, two touchdowns on their first two posses¬ sions. Sully then went to work with minutes left in the first period moving the ball from their own 24 yard line to the Yellowjackets’ 15 before time expired. The start of the second quarter saw the Lobos drive in for six points in six plays with Ricky Watts going the last yard on a bootleg run. Jeff Loerwald added the extra point. Sul Ross tried to tie the score before the half when they had a first and ten on HPC ' s 11 yard line. Four plays however netted only one yard and Sul Ross had to give up the ball. The Yellowjackets drove down the field going 85 yards in five plays aided by two penalties for HPC’s third score of the night and went ahead 21-7 at the halftime. The Lobos kicked off to the Yellow¬ jackets at the start of the second half and were handed another opportunity to even things up when four plays later David Woods recovered his second Yellowjacket fumble of the night on HPC’s 23 yard line. But the Lobos only moved three yards in the drive and had to settle for three points. Loerwald split the uprights from 31 yards out. HPC took the next kickoff and went 80 yards in eleven plays to make in 28-10. The Yellowjackets capped the night with a 41 yard TD drive late in the fourth period to make the final score 35-10. llhi Southwest Texas Bobcats Down Sully, 24- A blocked punt and a pass intercep¬ tion in the first half netted the Bobcats of Southwest Texas State University the 10 point winning margin they needed to defeat the Lobos, 24-14, in a hard fought home finale at Jackson Field. The Lobos converted a Bobcat fumble into seven points early in the first quar¬ ter. Lonnie Seipp came up with the ball on the Bobcat 27 and eight plays later the Lobos drove in to score. Rocky White added the PAT to make it 7-0. The Bobcats came right back with a 12-yard kick off return and a 53-yard sprint from the scrimmage that put the 14 Cats on the Lobo 5. Two plays later the Bobcats scored and converted the extra point to make the score 7-7. On a Lobo punting miscue, the Bob¬ cats found themselves with a first and 10 on the SR 18. Five plays later the Bobcats had obtained a 7 point lead. In the final minutes of the first half the Bobcats added three points to their total with a 35-yard field goal to make it 17-7. Another punting miscue and an inter¬ ception left the Alpine crew trailing 24- 7 in the last minutes of the third quar¬ ter. The momentum began to shift as the Lobo offensive team began driving toward the goal. Putting together eight plays, capped with an 11 -yard run by Wesley High, the Lobos drew within 11 points of the Bobcats. The PAT was good and the score stood 24-14. With less than two minutes left to play, the Lobos regained the ball. Ricky Watts however could complete only one pass in five attempts and the Bob¬ cats took over on downs and ran out the clock. 87 SR Battles ACC to Homecoming Loss The Lobos battled the Wildcats of Abi¬ lene Christian College (ACC) to a 21 -9 loss Homecoming weekend. The game was the only afternoon game of the season. The Lobos showed their teeth in the first 21 seconds of the game as Robert Bolden went over left guard and gal¬ loped 75 yards to pay dirt. Jeff Loer- wald’s extra point was blocked and the score stood at 6-0. The Wildcats came right back though and nine plays later scored when ACC quarterback Jay Reeves passed 15 yards to wingback Tim Balkin for a TD. Reeves added the extra point and the score was 7-6. ACC put 6 more points on the board early in the second quarter after marching 57 yards in five carries. They were aided by a personal foul penalty on the previous SR punt which moved the ball from their 20 to their 43. Reeves converted again and the score changed to 14-6. Jackson made a fair catch on an ACC punt on Sul Ross’ 48 and the offense went to work. In eight plays the Lobos moved to the Wildcat 12-yard line but found them¬ selves faced with a fourth and three and elected to try for three points. Loerwald split the goal posts with room to spare and the score was ACC 14—SR 9. ACC took the ensuing kick off and moved to the SR 39 where Reeves attempted a field goal which failed and left the Lobos trailing by five In the first half. The Wildcats came out clawing in the second half scoring on their second possession. Starting on their own 46 after a 10-yard punt return, ACC moved to the end zone in eight plays. Reeves’ kick was good and Sul Ross trailed 21-9. The Lobos continued to nip at the Wildcats’ flanks for the remainder of the game but were unable to score. They had lost another conference game by a slight margin. The Lobos drew blood again later in the first half after backing the Wildcats up against their own goal line. The game started off to a slow pace as both teams found it hard to hit the bas¬ ket. ACC managed to gain a 9-4 lead early in the first quarter and from this point on the Lobos found themselves playing catch-up basketball. The Lobo defense was able to keep the Wildcats from scoring on every possession but were forced to take bad shots themselves. By the close of the first half, the Lobos found them¬ selves down by the score of 46-32. The second half began much in the same fashion as the first. The Wildcats gained control of the ball and put the game completely out of the reach of the Lobos. The Lobos began fouling and these mistakes led to easy Wildcat scores. The Lobos finally began hitting the mark in the fourth quarter and were able to score 28 points during the period. However, this was not enough to harm the Wildcat’s lead. Abilene had scored 32 points in the final stanza to finish up the game with a 96- 76 victory. 92 £ 93 Sul Ross Overtimes Tarleton, 97-94 The Lobos gained a thrilling 97-94 overtime victory over Tarleton State. The Lobos used a stiff full-court press along with hot-handed shooting all night to defeat the Texans. The game was tight from the outset as the score see-sawed back and forth for the first 20 points. By the end of the first quarter Tarleton held a slim 18-16 lead. The Lobos came alive near the end of the half and went into the dressing room with a 42-39 lead. The second half started out on a good note for the Lobos as Kenny Bacon hit a jump shot to put the Lobos further ahead, 44-39. The Lobos held their lead most of the third quarter and went ahead by their largest margin, 56-50. The third quarter ended with the Lobos leading 70-69. During the fourth quarter, the lead changed hands several times until Mike Parker sank two free throws to make it 88- 88. A Lobo and Texan score ended regulation with a 90-90 tie. The overtime was tight but the Lobos never trailed. The Lobos jumped out to a quick 94-90 lead and never relin¬ quished it. Stalling for time, the Lobos were able to run down the clock. The Texans finally scored their first overtime points with 35 seconds left to narrow the margin 94-92. Kenny Bacon tallied the Lobos final two points giving the Lobos a 97-94 victory over the Texans. 94 95 HPC Scoring Attack Defeats Sully, 97-71 The Howard Payne Yellowjackets used an awesome scoring attack to defeat the Sul Ross Lobos 97-71. At the start of the game, the Yellowjackets were able to pull out front with a 6-0 lead. The closest the Lobos came to catching Howard Payne the first quarter was when they pulled within five points. The first quarter ended 24-17, Yel¬ lowjackets. During the second quarter, HPC scored eight unanswered points to jump to a commanding 32-17 lead. Eddie Steward sank a long Lobo jump-shot giving the Lobos 19 points, but the Jackets responded with six more points. The first half ended with Howard Payne leading 49-39. Sul Ross opened the scoring column the third quarter, but the Jackets responded with the shooting excellency they had displayed all night. The Jackets led 69-50 by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Sul Ross put its freshmen into the game, who showed a lot of hustle and a phenominal job of shoot¬ ing, as well as stealing the ball. Mike Parker scored six points and Doug Bradley finished up with four. 96 97 ASU Slips by Lobos, 74-73 The San Angelo Rams slipped by the Lobos with a 74-73 victory. From the time the Lobos controlled the first jump to the time they made the last basket, one would have thought the Lobos were playing for the Lone Star Conference championship. During the first quarter, the Lobos were able to jump to a quick lead mainly on the shooting of Eddie Ste¬ ward. The Rams came back, however, to gain a 22-20 lead. The second quarter was all Sul Ross as the Lobos again used Steward’s shooting to jump out to a 24-22 lead. The Lobos led by as much as nine points at 37-28, but the Rams were able to bring themselves back into the game to trail 37-32 at the end of the first half. In the second half the Lobos and the Rams played neck-to-neck. The Lobos were able to maintain the lead until Angelo mustered its forces and tied the game, 51-51. After Angelo tied the game neither team held more than a three point lead at one time. The Rams finally did the Lobos in when Angelo hit two free shots with 11 seconds left in the game to give them a 74-71 lead. Eddie Steward tallied the final two points tor the Lobos as the buzzer sounded, ending the game in a 74-73 victory for the Rams. 98 f- . 99 Lobo Cindermen Work Hard to Make Year Progressive 100 Track Team Members of the track team were: Row 1, Gilbert Mesa, Steve Garcia, Elifonso Esquivel, Gerald Land, Alfonso Men¬ doza, Pete Malonado, Henry Ledezma, Row 2, Oliver Payne, Melvin Parrimore, Derek Moore, Roy Malp- hurs, L. Acknowledgments Many long and hard hours went into constructing this yearbook so Sul Ross students would have something to look back on and remember “those college years.” A spe¬ cial thanks goes to Dr. Clifford Casey for allowing us to use the old photographs which appear in this book. Another note of appreciation goes to Greg and Harper Jones who labored right alongside the staff (all two of us). The final thank you goes to our photographers, especially Vickie Smith. If Vickie had not of come to Sul Ross at the begin¬ ning of the spring semester, we would still be working on this book. It is our hope that by reading and looking through this yearbook, some pride in Sul Ross will develop. So many events took place during the year that are not recorded in this volume. However, what is recorded serves as an overall picture of “the way we were.” A Acosta, Abigay: Marfa, 190 Acosta, Antonio: Marfa, 198 Acosta, Cecilio: Marathon Acosta, Apolito: Marfa, 172 Acosta, Mario: Diliey Acosta, Poli: 198 Acosta, Tiburcio: Marfa Adams, Barbara: Silverton Adams, Carolyn: Marathon, 198 Adams, Elaine: Marfa, 198 Adams, Frank: Ft.
