It wasn’t exactly a ‘barn burner’ in Stephenville; that is, not until the last few seconds. Both the Texans and Lobos puttered and sputtered and put ten points a piece on the board. It wasn’t until the clock read 00:01 in the final quarter that the barn began to burn as the Lobo’s little place kicker, Nixon trotted on to the field and arched a 32-yard field goal through the up-rights. The Texan’s barn burned to the ground as the final second ticked off to 00:00. Other Lobo scores came on a 14-yard scamper around the left end by Larry Cottrell early in the fourth quarter and another Archie Nixon field goal mid-way through the first period. McKenzie lets one go against onrushing Ange’lo State Rams Football The Lobos opened the ’73 campaign on the road, traveling to Portales, New Mexico and the campus of the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds. It didn’t take the Lobos long to put their first six points on the scoreboard as defensive end Wayne LaFond found a Greyhound fumble in his hands just nine yards from the ‘Hounds’ own endzone from where he rambled in just two plays after the initial kickoff. The teams later exchanged field goals with Archie Nixon doing the honors for Sully from 26 yards out. From then on it was a guy named Tom Manley who dominated the action, the Greyhound freshman running back galloped some 151 yards and scored three touchdowns as the ‘Hounds’ opened up a 24-10 lead. The Lobos got back on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter as quarterback Larry Cottrell pitched a scoring strike to split end Billy Byrd. The Lobo score came a little too late as the clock ran down to 00:00 with Sully behind 24-16. 32 Lobo boosters watch with anticipation during crucial moment in the Sam Houston contest. Head Coach Richard Harvey in a sideline strategy session with quarterback Larry Cottrell The home fans were itching, it was near the end of September and the Lobos were finally playing on their own turf at Jackson Field. The opponent, from the other side of the Lone Star State, Sam Houston State, the Bearkats. It was back and forth, for both the score and the Lobo quarterbacks. The score bounced, the ’Kats 7; Lobos 0; Lobos 8; ’Kats 7; Rats 16; Lobos 14; the quarterbacks bounced, Smitty McKenzie dives over on a one yard plunge, Larry Cottrell hit Randy Moldenhauer with a pass for the two point conversion, McKenzie directs a drive of 77 yards, Cottrell hits Byrd for 31 yards. The two Lobo quarterbacks directed the team in different forms and fashions to result in a 26 to 16 Lone Star Conference victory when the clock read 00:00. Fullback Randy Moldenhauer contributed with two touchdown plunges and Nixon arched a 27-yard field goal. Confetti takes to the air with another Lobo score Lobo Marching Band strikes up the fight song at half time Coach Harvey discusses strategy with McKenzie On October 13, 1973, Sul Ross celebrated it’s 50th anniversary of football and honored the man who started it off, the Lobo ' s first mentor B. C. Graves. During pre-game activities, Coach Graves received a commemora¬ tive plaque before the Lobo ' s annual homecoming game. The day’s opponent was Texas A A I, a perennial conference power that for the first time in many years was off to a dismal start. The Lobos fell behind in the first half as the Javelinas put seven points on the Jackson Field scoreboard. Not to be denied, on this the anniversary and homecoming, Sul Ross marched back with Larry Cottrell scoring from two yards out and evening the score at 7-7. Again, Nixon was called upon late in the game, this time he arched the ball through from 45 yards away. This established a new record for field goal distance at Sul Ross. The Lobos clung to their slim lead; as the seconds ticked away from another home¬ coming. 00:00. Sul Ross 10, Texas A l 7. The post-game story: The Howard Payne Yellowjackets stuck out a 19-6 win over the sporadic Sul Ross Lobos in Brownwood Saturday night continuing their efforts toward the LSC title. Sporadic was the proper term; a Lobo drive ending with a Larry Cottrell pass interception on the HPC 17-yard line; andother drive ending on the HPC 24-yard line with Nixon failing to arch one through the up-rights. More drives, more fumbles, while the ' Jackets put 19 points on the scoreboard, 00:00. Abilene Christian College had just entered the Lone Star Conference and already they were reaching for the top. Midway through the season the assumption was, “nobody was going to stop ACC.” Unless, yes, ’Ole Sully’ can pull off any kind of upset—remember? Some air of optimism was shed through the conference speculators, yet when it was all said and done, the bus ride back from Abilene became extra long. There were times it looked promising, the Lobos held the potent Wildcat offense to seven points through the first quarter. The Lobos turned to the offense only to be denied on a disputed pass play attempt. A disheart¬ ening factor that led to Lobo miscues. Some of the activities included a bonfire, a reunion of Coach Graves and his footballers, the notorious homecoming parade, presentation of Patsy Guerra, Homecoming Queen, and her Court including Esmeralda Rodriguez, Donna Hadamek, Carla Breckles, and Sylvia Flores; and of course, Sul Ross University’s 401st gridiron battle ever played—this time against Texas A I. As a breather for football fans, one could attend a three act comedy, The Owl and the Pussycat, presented by the Sul Ross Drama department, the women’s volleyball game against New Mexico State, or a concert put on by the SRSU Rock Ensemble. True to tradition, the Lobos defeated Texas A and I 10 to 17 and made another vic torious homecoming for Sully. Gregg Bass escorts a wind-blown Patsy Guerra, Sul Ross Homecoming Queen 37 No comment It was back to the two quarterback show for the Lobos as they met the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in Alpine with the hopes that the Lobos could maintain a spot in the first division of the conference standings. The Lumberjacks had but one quarterback and he directed the Jacks to 38 points while the Lobos managed 22. Smitty McKenzie held the Lobos together, passing for 209 yards and two touchdowns while running for another. Nixon arched a 36 yard field goal through the goal posts. Once more a new Lobo record was estab¬ lished as Billy Byrd scampered 86 yards with a McKenzie pass during the losing effort—a new pass play distance record . The Lobos dropped to a 3 wins 4 loses season record while standing 3-3 in conference action. 38 Remember Sul Ross was the tune they played in Commerce as the Lobos traveled there to meet the East State Lions. It was the Lobos who pinned the Lions with their only conference loss during the ’72 campaign which found the Lions as NAIA champions. East Texas did remember the result of a year ago and answered with a score of 45 to 0. The Lobos failed to mount any offensive pressure while the Lions showed offensive punch from just about every direction. The Lobos turned the ball over to the Lions on six different occasions, three coming by fumbles and three by pass interception. 00 : 00 . Is the referee an eligible receiver? Nolyn McMaryion receives congratulations after first down catch Southwest Texas held Sul Ross to minimal yardage as the Bobcats defeated the Lobos in a Lone Star Conference game in San Marcos 28-0. Again the Lobo offensive unit could not sustain any attack while the Bobcat running backs found the middle of the Sul Ross defensive unit to be good running territory. The Lobo coaches attempted to use defensive end Wayne LaFond at running back but met with little success as Southwest stacked up everything that came their way. Angelo State was the Lobos’ final opponent as the two teams met at Jackson Field. It was the last appearance for eight seniors in a Lobo uniform. Once more the Lobos fell behind early in the contest as Angelo ' s Rams found the running game to be their “cup of tea”. The Lobos did come back late in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Larry Cottrell to Nolyn McMaryion. It again became interesting as the half came to a close with the score Angelo 14, Sul Ross 6. It didn ' t take long for the Rams to put the ball back on the ground and put another eight points on the board early in the second half. Again the Lobos began to fight back. An Angelo miscue developed into two points for the Lobos in the form of a safety and Smitty McKenzie hit Jimmy Scott with a touch¬ down strike to make it close. The Lobo effort fell short with the final scoreboard reading 00:00 Angelo State 27, Sul Ross 16. The Lobo season opener, played at the Lub¬ bock Christian College Tournament, went into overtime with the Lobos taking a 70-69 decision over McMurry. Against Lubbock Christian it was much of the same thing, another close one, with the Lobos coming out on top 67-65. The Lobos played their third consecutive game on the road in Portales, New Mexico against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds. The result: similiar, but not exactly the same. Another close contest, but with the Greyhounds grabbing the victory, 58-56. John Fortenberry had his best game of the year against the Greyhounds, scoring 24 points and Willie Elmore grabbed off 15 rebounds in the los¬ ing effort. The Lobos returned home to hose the Sul Ross Invitational Tournament and did away with three opponents to capture first place honors. In the Lobos first contest, they pasted the College of Santa Fe, 92-79; the second game went down to 42 the wire with Sul Ross taking a 84-83 victory over Lubbock Christian. The championship game found the Lobos facing Wayland Baptist College. Sul Ross posted a 69-65 victory. Willie Elmore paced the Lobos with 20 points in the championship game and was selected to the All- Tournament team along with John Fortenberry. The Lobos were back on the road the following week and dropped a rematch with Wayland Bap¬ tist on the Pioneer’s home court, 77-68. The Lone Star Conference season got underway midway through December and Sul Ross met newcomer to the conference, Abilene Christian College. The Lobos answered the first round converence bell and came out fighting, posting a 86-83 victory. Again it was Wlmore who paced the Lobos with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Other Lobos contributing points in the victory were Fortenberry with 18 points, Bill Shead with 10 and Gary Barnes with 17. 43 John Fortenberry tries out for head cheerleader H The second conference matchup was to set a precedent for the remainder of the season for the Lobos. Lobos faultered at the finish dropping a GO¬ GS decision to Howard Payne. During the Christmas semester break, the Lobos played two non-conference foes and came away with one loss and one victory. The loss came at the hands of McMurry College, 73-60, on the Indians home court. The vieetry, in the Lobos HPE Gymnasium, was a convincing one, a 81-67 win over Eastern New Mexico. The converence race, back on schedule after the semester break, saw the Lobos traveling to Texas A I and Southwest Texas. The Lobos came out on the short end in the two contests, taking a 71-65 defeat from Texas A I and a 87- 60 trimming at Southwest Texas. Lobo Gary Barnes in another two point try Coach Story alone on the court 44 Who’s got the ball? I didn’t do it! It went thataway! 45 The two pernenial powers of the Lone Star Conference came to Alpine in late January and the Lobos seemed ready to pull the carpet out from under their pedestal. Stephen F. Austin, with their usual impressive lineup, saw the Lobos post a 87-82 win. The Lobos had Sam Houston on the ropes during the entire contest in Alpine, but the Lobos let them off late in the contest and the BearKats took a 87-80 victory in overtime. John Fortenberry shows the pressure of the game After the breaking loss to Sam Houston, the Lobos headed down hill. The Lobos hit a winless streak that extended into the final contests of the season, dropping close contests time after time. Tarleton State pasted the Lobos 85-71; then an overtime loss to East Texas 100-89; tehn a last second loss to Angelo State 71-69. New Mexico provided a break from the conference schedule for the Lobos, but the Lobos continued their downward skid, dropping a 80- 61 decision in Las Cruces. Upon returning to the conference schedule again, the Lobos met with final minute disaster time after time. Howard Payne popped the Lobos 78-73 in Brownwood; Abilene Christian out dis¬ tanced the Lobos 99-91 in Abilene and Texas A l and Southwest Texas topped Coach Chester Story’s crew 90-79 and 72-58, respectively, in Alpine. Bill Shead, 45, stretches just a little bit higher Willie Elmore tries snatching the ball away ; - — - —= 47 48 John Fortenberry, 21, stretches out for Sul Ross In both the Texas A I and Southwest Texas games, the action was fierce. Any time the Javelinas and the Lobos get together, it’s bound to be a barn burner, the Javelina’s Hoegie Sim¬ mons and the Lobo’s Tom Richardson had their usual contest of “Mr. Offense vs. Mr. Defense.” Ken Lawrence provided much of the scoring punch against Southwest Texas, tallying 23 points. Against Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, the second time around, the Lobos met with much of the same results with Sul Ross dropping a 80-70 decision to Sam Houston’s BearKats and a 91-83 decision to SFA’s Lumberjacks. His time for the twenty four mile course was 58 minutes and 38 seconds, that’s a big fifteen minutes less than his own winning time last year. Mike Furrey, a Sul Ross Geology student from Midland, dropped his rocks and really dug to come in second. A notable third place was won by Bill Finnern, the pride of Alpine High, who trailed the more experienced Furrey by only 38 seconds. The ladies broke the ranks of mere cheerleaders to grace the race as riders. It was a real heartbreaker for Sul Ross coed Becky Frahm who missed catching Di Ann Rutherford of the Lubbock County Wheelmen by a tacky two seconds. Di Ann’s time was 1 hour, 16 minutes, and 10 seconds for overall fifth place. Wait till next l ' year, guys. For the student, this department concentrates in the fields of business education, accounting, marketing, management, finance and secretarial administration. It is led by Dr. Roger Towns, who also serves as director of the Division of Business Administration and Applied Arts. Degrees in business range from the one- year secretarial certificate to the Bachelor of Business Administration to the newly approved Master of Business Administration. The M.B.A., approved by the Coordinating Board this spring, replaced the Master of Arts degree in business administration. The change, according to Towns, was made to designate more accurately the degree offered. Under the leadership of Dr. Everett Turner, the department has expanded due to the continuing need of highly intensified, scientific skills required in today’s care and management of domestic animals. Concen¬ tration areas include animal science, range management, animal health management, wildlife management, meat industry management, agri¬ business, and a new two-year program in animal technology. A herd of new courses have been added this year, to coincide with the department’s growth. These include undergraduate courses in ranch equipment, clinical assistance and instrumentation, agricultural mathematics, and pharmacology. Another course added to the ever-growing curriculum is a training course in farriery, or horseshoeing. Because of the varied interests displayed by the department, three clubs are sponsored; Clip and Brand, for animal science majors; Range Management Club for range management majors; and the Rodeo Club, for the advance¬ ment and promotion of rodeo on campus. A special thanks goes to everyone at the print shop—Brenda in particular. Then there’s the photographers—Dana Jones, Vickie Smith, and Ronnie Kinney. Ray Ray Valencia deserves praise for his diligence and Ray Nichols gets a special thanks for everything. And me? Just let me rest in peace. I a a I
