The many personalities that come to our school are molded by an understanding and a concern for others. As each student leaves and assumes his role in life, the personality of Sul Ross increases in depth and in magnitude and is felt far beyond the bounds of our Alpine, Texas campus. 2 with a Distinct Personality College is not all relaxation and more often than not there is work to be done. 3 From the air Sul Ross campus looks like a typical college campus—it’s the people who make it different. 4 Dr. Ernest Shearer, an instructor in history, takes time out to chat with two students. Lab work is an important part of any science class, here Mr. Dwight Deal is busily working with several of his students. The personality of any college is based on the peo¬ ple, the enviroment, and ideas that unite that insti¬ tution. The personality of Sul Ross is unique because of its location, its faculty, its students, and the com¬ mon goals they pursue—betterment of themselves and their school. Dr. Norman L. McNeil, President of Sul Ross State College, has been the leader in Sul Ross’ rapid growth and advancement in the three years he has served as president. 5 The purpose of any college or university is to en¬ lighten the minds of its students and to produce young adults who will be capable, active, citizens. James H. Clark, acting chairman of the Business Admini stration Department, instructs a puzzled student. The personality of Sul Ross and its students can best be determined by examining the college and the purpose for which it was created—the exchange of ideas and the search for knowledge. The card catalog is used as a guide to find books within the library. Library assistants are constantly busy keeping the card catalog up-to date. The Sul Ross newspaper, the Skyline, is always an item of interest. The Student Union Building is a busy place on the SR campus. 8 The Industrial Arts Club float was one of the many that represented the clubs and organizations in the Homecoming parade. The activities engaged in by any group of individ¬ uals tend to mold the personalities of those individuals. Participant or spectator, in work or in play, the stu¬ dents of Sul Ross reflect the personality of the school. The captains of Sul Ross and Texas A I football teams meet in the cen¬ ter of the field before the Homecoming game. The crowd-so often criticized, but so necessary at games. 9 Several faculty members anxiously await the beginning of the faculty-Intramural football champions game. Two co-eds discuss campus life on the steps of Ferguson Hall before going to the campus tennis courts. 10 “All work and no play tends to make Jack a dull boy.” A college campus based strictly on academic rigors with no extra curricular activity would also make Sul Ross a very dull school. The students and faculty of Sul Ross find time and many opportunities to express themselves outside of the classroom. The Student Center, one of Sul Ross’ newest attractions open to all for fun and relaxation. The Student Union Building provides both Pool Tables and Ping Pong Tables for the students enjoyment. Queen Donna Willet and her court are presented before the Sul Ross - Texas A l game. Students worked long hours on the floats to make the homecoming parade a success. Cheerleaders are always an active part of any football season and the heart of a college’s spirit. Spirit and Loyalty Spirit is an essential and unique part of any col¬ lege. The Homecoming weekend at Sul Ross is the height of this spirit. But win, lose, or draw-the loyalty re¬ mains. Sul Ross band marches in the homecoming parade down the main streets of Alpine. 13 Sul Ross Seniors are proud to wear their class rings, a sign of per¬ sonal, social, and aca¬ demic achievement. It has been said that “the future of the world lies with the youth of today.” How can the foundation for that future be better laid than in our nation’s colleges? The personality of Sul Ross and its Students has a bear¬ ing on the future of our nation and the world. Per¬ haps Sul Ross graduates will never be movie stars but they will decide the type of movies made. Perhaps Sul Ross graduates will never be professional athletes but they will be the heart of the crowd. Perhaps a Sul Ross graduate will never be President of the United States but Sul Ross students will be citizens who will take part in choosing that President. What the world is tomorrow depends on what college students are doing today. The mastery of books is the key to education. 14 As the future of the nation grows through building of character, so Sul Ross grows by building a larger and better equipped campus. 15 This page is dedicated to the young men who have left our nation’s classrooms to preserve the freedom we hold so dear. We especially thank the many who have passed through our halls. And we pray for their safety and for peace for those who will follow. 16 TABLE OF CONTENTS Academics 18 Sports 62 Organizations 96 Favorites 124 Classes 142 Campus Life 190 17 Congressman Richard C. McNeil took office as president of Sul Ross State College. In those three years, Sul Ross has built a new gymna¬ sium, a new dormitory-cafeteria complex is under cons¬ truction, the old museum was renovated into a Student Union Building, and a preliminary work on a new library building was completed this spring. In the three years of Dr. McNeil’s administration, en¬ rollment at Sul Ross has risen 58%. This enrollment spiral culminated with an all-time record of 1972 students en¬ rolled this spring. Dr. McNeil has been the leader in campus growth and expansion. But more important than all the buildings and statistics are the attitudes and trends now firmly establish¬ ed on the Sul Ross campus. His capable and far-sighted leadership has made great strides in the critical area of student-administration re¬ lations. Dr. McNeil has stated publicly that “I will be very happy to meet with any student group at any time to dis¬ cuss things which may be pertinent to the improvement and expansion of Sul Ross State College.” Any group will make little progress without a capable leader. The extraordinary progress of Sul Ross State Col¬ lege in the last three years is a tribute to Dr. Norman L. McNeil’s dynamic leadership. With five of the eight Lone Star teams receiving ratings in UPI and AP small college rankings, the LOBOS were in for a rough time. Hit hard by graduation in the past two years, Coach David Slaughter was plagued by inexperience. At the start of the season, four freshmen manned the defensive line, and the offensive line held only two returning starters. This flock of capable first year players was bound to make mis¬ takes due to their lack of actual game experience, and they felt the sting of their older conference foes. Opening with a 34-0 win over Eastern New Mexico University, the Big Red next clobbered San Angelo 26-12. But Sept. 30 brought a conference game and disaster as Southwest Texas rolled over Sully 47-13. The next week¬ end’s non-conference tilt at Midland saw the LOBOS crush Emporis (Kans.) State 40-7. With only conference games remaining, the LOBOS returned to Alpine only to lose to Stephreen F. Austin by one heartbreaking point, 31-30. In Commerce, the LOBOS were shut out by East Texas State 35-0. The festivities of Homecoming were dulled by Texas A I’s come-from-behind win, 35-13. Both Mc- Murray and Howard Payne overcame Big Red on their home turfs 33-0 and 41-15. The LOBOS’ season ended on a sad note as they dropped the final game against Sam Houston, 24-21. David Slaughter Head coach Richard Harvey Offensive coach Orville Fletcher Offensive line coach Frank Krhut Defensive coach INDIVIDUALS END FOOTBALL While the LOBOS did not down their conference rivals, the 1967 season was not to be chalked up as “bad football”. Football 1967 was the season of the individuals whose efforts helped the LOBOS to fight until the last minute had ticked away. Holding a 9.3 100 yard dash record, Jacob Henry con¬ tinually rated double coverage on passes. A scrapper, he was the LOBOS’ greatest break-away threat. Senior middle linebacker John Sarabia was a great defensive threat who continued to play fine ball even after injuries sidelined him for part of the season. And James Miller playing his first year at line helped to make the LOBOS’ punch mightier. Once described as, “possibly the most underrated man on the team,” senior Ray Alvarez played consistant football at guard and as he filled in as linebacker in Sara- bia’s absence. A vetern of three seasons, Alvarez and of¬ fensive lineman Don Malone were chosen as co-captains for the Big Red. Mike King and Fred Linton were prob¬ ably the most mobile of the LOBOS as they played a num¬ ber of positions throughout the season. mm STAR, FIVE CAREERS Five Sul Ross seniors closed their football careers in the final game against Sam Houston’s Bearkats. Most knew the glory of the 1965 season, the happiness and heartbreak in the wins and the near-wins in the following seasons. Mark, Rogers, Fred Linton, John Sarabia, Ray Alvarez and Cotton Barnes ... All leave Sully a little better for their efforts as Fighting Lobos. Henry’s speed makes his legs too fast for the camera’s shutter to freeze. Led by the Co-Captains, the Big Red limber for battle. Serving as honorary Co-Captains at their last college game, seniors, (1-r) Linton, Rogers, Sarabia, Alvarez and Barnes wait for the coin toss. HAPPINESS, HEARTACHES Sometimes we stomped them. Sometimes we got stomped . . . FOOTBALL!!! Happiness reigns as Looney scores on the Bearkats. OUR LOBO MATURES.... In her second year as the official college mascot, Miss Sully has changed a great deal. Maturation brought her more pounds and a change in coloration that make her truly seem the Lobo she is. And Sully’s personality has really asserted itself! No longer a timid cub, Miss Sully has displayed a wide variety of moods to her trainers Molly Faulk and J. D. Hopkins. The Lobos’ fans were frequently able to see Miss Sully at football, baseball and track events as weli as at num¬ erous pep rallies throughout the year. Showing her stubborn side. Miss Sully refuses to follow Molly Faulk. 4 , Walter Harrison, afraid Miss Sully’s moving in “for the kill,” scrambles to protect his Lobo suit. In a quieter moment, Sully wants to play with J. D. Hopkins and wife, Peggy. The Lobo band can be included in the sports section because they add much to the football and basketball seasons. The marching band performed at half-time at all home football games and were in the homecoming parade. At many of the basketball games the band was represented by a small group that helped spirit. The band does much to improve and expand the participation of students at athletic events.
