DR. NORMAN L. McNEIL Dr. Norman L. McNeil, president of Sul Ross State College, is, first and foremost, an educator. For two decades prior to his being named president of Sul Ross on July 29, 1965, Dr. McNeil taught in Texas colleges and universities, including the University of Texas, the University of Houston, Trinity University and Texas A l College. He was professor of English at the latter institution prior to his acceptance of the Sul Ross presidency. He is an educator in the fullest sense of the word. He not only has taught at home, but has traveled extensively, researching and teaching in countries other than his home¬ land. A native of San Antonio, he was born October 3, 1915. Dr. McNeil holds three degrees, all from the University of Texas. He received the Bachelor of Arts Degree there in 1937, the Master of Arts in 1944 and the Ph.D. in 1956. He is married to the former Kathleen Howard of Corpus Christi, whom he met while they were both undergraduates at Texas. They have two sons—Laird, 22, a University of Texas law student, and John Robert, 19, a sophomore at the same university. Dr. McNeil looks at the victory football presented to him. K Prior to World War II, Dr. McNeil served li years as principal of Yancey, Texas High School. Following service in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943-44, he was an instructor of English at the Uni¬ versity of Texas in 1945-46. The years of 1946-47 were spent on the English faculty at the University of Houston, and 1947-52 in the same status at Trinity University. He returned to the University of Texas to serve as an instrucor of English and Director of English for Foreign Students in 1952, and assumed his position at Texas A l in 1956. In 1963 Dr. McNeil was invited by the Minister of Education of Saudi Arabia to tour that country as a special consultant on its university scholarship program. He has written for numerous publications, and has presented lecture-concerts both in the Southwest, and in the Northeastern section of the United States. Mrs. McNeil Page 9
