.i 1 The Brand 1964-65 Sul Ross State College Jeff Henderson... Editor Melba Wied ... Business Manager Curt Bramble ... Photographer Dal Herring ... Sponsor DEDICATION 2 Mrs. Bryan Wildenthal MRS. BRYAN WILDENTHAL Because of the many evidences of her love for Sul Ross . . . because she is forever interested in the progress and welfare of students here . . . because her unending handiwork to make our campus an even more beautiful place ... the 1965 BRAND is respectfully dedicated to our First Lady, Mrs. Bryan Wildenthal. The honoree refuses to accept spotlight positions she so often earns, and shuns publicity so richly deserved. Had the recipient of the 1965 dedication not been a closely guarded secret, she would have vetoed the unanimous choice of the annual staff before the idea ever got off the launching pad. Though she prefers to remain in the shadows and repels personal glory, the former Miss Doris Kellam has walked many trails. She is a woman of letters, having attained the bachelor’s degree at Southwest Texas State College, where the courtship with her eventual husband began during their sophomore year. She is a teacher. Three years prior to their marriage and six years after, Mrs. Wildenthal taught in public schools, first in Gonzales and later at San Marcos. She is a devoted wife and mother. Following her marriage to the then business manager and commercial teacher at Southwest Texas State College, Mrs. Wildenthal was First Lady at San Angelo College two years before Dr. Wildenthal accepted the presidency here in 1952. They have two sons—Hobson, an instructor at Rice University in Houston, and Kern, a medical doctor who is currently doing his internship in New York City. She is active. Sul Ross glows because of her handiwork which produces lovely campus flow¬ ers most months of the year. Active also in educational organizations, she is a member of the American Association of University Women and Delta Kappa Gamma. A Christian who believes in the youth of America, she is a friend to Sul Ross students, and cares for them and their activities. Hers is a place of prominence here. And, though she would prefer her work to remain un¬ noticed, the BRAND staff won ' t hear to it. The pages of this 1965 yearbook are dedicated to our First Lady. This yearbook tries to tell that life is the drama you live from day to day with its happiness and its sorrows. John Brown’s Body, the Fine Arts production, showed laughter . . . tears . . . life . . . death. Let Us examine the stage— COLLEGE— And the play you are a part of. Let us examine these four pages, Not as John Brown’s Body, But as college life. You arrive at college with an unsure, yet friendly atti¬ tude. 9 The world is a stage; So is college, And you soon find There’s work to be done. The faculty represent The employer; You are The employee. The instructor 10 The student But, there’s also entertainment Sometimes things go wrong. You try to explain. You sometimes stand alone! With this in mind. Let us go through The rest of the book. ALPINE, Oct. 3—How sweet it was. The Lobos, after dropping a heart-breaking 9-7 decision to Southwest Texas in the final ticks of the 1963 game, defeated those same Bobcats here in a thrilling 16-14 upset of the defending Lone Star Conference champions. SR scored on its second play from scrimmage. Luz Pedraza handed off to Lex, who threw to the left. Pedraza took it on the bounce, and raced 68 yards for the score. Bill Nitcholas, who later provided the winning margin with a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter, kicked the PAT. SWT scored in the second quatrer after Pe¬ draza had sneaked across from the one to take a 13-0 edge. The Bobcats scored on Louie Sim- mond’s 70-yard jaunt. They added another TD on Joe Bednarski’s two-yard plunge in the third. It was a determined effort by the Lobos, who jumped to the front in LSC standings. Against SWT 70 Score’s What Counts! It was the Lobos’ first win in history over the Lions at Jackson Field. ET scored first, driving 69 yards. John Stooks- berry passed 1 3 yards to end Jerry Mackey, but this was to be ET’s only touchdown until late in the game when Stooksberry tossed two yards to Doug Paschal to complete an 80-yard march. SR tied the game in the second quarter when Tommy Nelson blocked a Lion punt, and Jesse Patterson carried the loose ball 40 yards for the TD. James Collins put the Lobos in front in the third when the Lobos ate up 69 yards in eight plays, with Collins carrying for the final seven steps. Four plays later, Alfredo Avila picked off a Stooksberry pass, and rambled 75 yards for SR’s third TD. SR accounted for six more points on a 30- yard field goal by Bill Nitcholas, and a 42-yard effort by Paul Pasqua. SR Story in Figures ET 10 First Downs 18 164 Net Yds. Rushing 126 35 Net Yds. SR Ties Number 1 KINGSVILLE, Oct. 31—Strange, and somewhat unexpected occurrences were written into history here this Hallowe’en Night. Prior to 8 p.m., Texas A l was ranked as the number one football team among more than 400 NAIA schools. A couple of hours later, when Sul Ross had gained a 7-7 tie with the national leaders, they faded to sixth position. In the first period, Alfredo Avila picked off one of the Lobos’ five interceptions for the night to ignite a 54-yard scoring march. Luz Pedraza passed seven yards to halfback Poppy Rodriquez for the score, and Bill Nicholas’ PAT made it 7-0. A l came back to tie the game with 6:08 left before intermission. A l also marched 54 yards, and also used a pass, a six-yarder from Randy Johnson to Terry Oglesby, to knot the count. Pass interceptions and a tenacious Lobo de¬ fense quelled Texas A l, holding the Hogs ' to their lowest point production of the season. SR Game at Glance A l 10 First Downs 11 69 Net Yds. Sul Ross opened scoring in the first period, when A. C. Lex scored on a three-yard run to end a 70-yard scoring march. Bill Nitcholas kicked the PAT. In the second quarter, Mauricio Vasquez kicked a 44-yard field goal with 1 1:44 left until intermission, when SRSC enjoyed a 10-0 com¬ mand. HPC broke the scoring ice in the third period, when halfback Mack DuBose swept right end for 10 yards and a TD. The score was set up by a fumble on the SRSC 22-yard line. The Lobos completed their scoring in the final chapter when they saddled an HPC interceptor in the Yellow Jackets’ end zone, thus account¬ ing for a two-point safety. Sam Houston’s Only Loss HUNTSVILLE, Nov. 21—Scoring two second- quarter touchdowns, Sul Ross stunned Lone Star Conference champion Sam Houston, 14-7, be¬ fore 10,000 fans, handing the eventual national co-champions their only loss of the year.
